I want to show you a couple things on Joe and some of the things that I've been
working on like I mentioned before my whole my main direction in jiu-jitsu has
always been to make jiu-jitsu better in MMA in the UFC the UFC is what got me
into jiu-jitsu when I saw the UFC I was like that was the most amazing thing
ever
and then you know immediately I started doing jiu-jitsu hoist is my favorite
fighter anybody who did anything with jiu-jitsu I was going always back oh it's
funny because you in one way some a lot of people in the community see you as a
bad boy in jiu-jitsu oh the guy's talking jay that's against us but I don't see
I
never saw that - I always felt like you trying to create your own routines and
you know I was trying to help jiu-jitsu that's all it was is I got I got tired
of
seeing like a UFC 13 15 17 tired of seeing jiu-jitsu guys just you know I'm
when
Jerry Bolander fought Fabio Jurgel I was like oh how was he he was getting beat
up
when uh Jorge Pereira fought Matt Hughes man that hurt so much because jiu-jitsu
was my
life and I thought we got to do something to fix this especially in the car let
me let
me let me show you a little bit just now the one thing prior to I saw Henzo I
saw
Henzo like just hold on like this for a second and that's when I thought oh
that
could be something there because generally you know people would be you'd be
like you
guys were doing like this when there was headbutts right and then the headbutts
came out so this became a good way to survive from the punishment so from there
when I saw Henzo do this and hold I decided to start bringing it all up and
really get use my legs now because with the Gi it's easy to control here's
control the posture but hard to control the posture and your legs keep slipping
down you want to go high guard so my whole my whole system started becoming
this
kind of stuff like there's no way he could touch my face here there's no way
and I see
Krone again Shinya Yoki so and even Marcelo sometimes he comes here to hold you
know to
hold him in so the rubber guard I don't know if you heard that but it's all
about just getting
into this position if his arms up here if his arms up here I'll attack this arm
I'll even go like this and there's no way he can hit me and there's no way
um uh he can pull out and stand up again so that became my obsession is to
develop a guard where they can't get up and run away and be able to prevent him
he can't elbow me right here so as I cross both these legs there's no way he
can hit me it's impossible so um that's that's what I developed for Jiu Jitsu
and like you said the Jiu Jitsu community
uh a lot of them took that as oh he thinks he knows more than us look at him he's
turning his back on Jiu Jitsu and the reason I dropped the gi is because I felt
that every second you grab the collar and grab the sleeve
that's not the same fighting stance as MMA so I thought you know let's look I
didn't drop the gi to say fuck you Jiu Jitsu it was to you know what for MMA
the gi is not good we have to the fighting stance has to be the same when we
trap when we train grappling with no punches or with punches it has to be the
same stance the same fighting stance so based on what again when I saw you and
Henzo doing it had to come from that
defensive posture and that overhook so you don't get hit then the legs come up
then you start attacking while you control them while you keep them from
standing up and going stand up again because there was a fight with Fabiano Ija
and Dave Rene in the UFC
it's like UFC 20 something where Fabiano Ija had a good armbar from the guard
so he fights Dave Rene who's a pretty good wrestler Fabiano Ija could not take
him down so they get against the cage and Fabiano Ija would jump full guard
pull him into his guard
and then put the feet on the hips to set up for the armbar because that's how
he does it and then Dave Rene just stood up and just walked away and go do it
again so then Fabiano Ija gets up he did it five times in that fight he jumps
guard and pulls him down but as soon as he opened up his legs and put his feet
on the hips Dave Rene would just say do it again and then Dave Rene ended up
winning so for me that was like mmm that's a problem because they don't have to
be on top if you pull guard because you can't take the fighter down he doesn't
have to be on top
you have to stay there as soon as you open the guard you're gonna get up just
like Alistair Overeem when he fought Fabio Verdun Fabio pulled him in his guard
but as soon as he opened it Alistair said come on I'm not gonna go down there
so it became a hmm okay that's a problem we're gonna have to have him in the
guard if we can't wrestle him we have to pull guard and then keep them from
standing up so the clinch became in my opinion the most important thing because
you gotta be able to clinch him
and not only clinch him so they don't stand up but clinch him so they don't hit
you and then you have to have offense from that clinch so anytime someone will
train in gi and they have the collar and sleeve that's not working on the clinch
so that's like you're not working on it so that's why we're seeing all these
black belts they come in fighter after fighter all these guys American top team
black belt black belt and then when they're on their back they're not used to
offense from the defense the best defensive position
they just don't ever work there they think okay I'm just gonna train the gi
grab the collar and grab the sleeve and then it's gonna somehow work itself out
somehow it's gonna work itself out when it doesn't work like that like if you're
practicing your fighting stance like this but in a fight you have to go here it's
gonna be different you should have been practicing like this so that was my
philosophy and everything I've ever done every little tweak I've ever done to jiu-jitsu
some people in the jiu-jitsu community Carlinhos number one guy he thinks that
I'm doing it I'm doing it to think that I'm the best guy and that I'm better
than jiu-jitsu
oh look he dropped the gi yeah look he dropped the gi he hates jiu-jitsu he's
betraying I'm like it's not like that he even called John Jock and said boy
daddy bra what's he doing he taking off the gi you gave him a black belt on me
because I already said if I ever teach jiu-jitsu
jiu-jitsu I'm gonna teach without the gi just to do my part for MMA you can
keep the gi and you can train the gi you can do the mundialis but some I need
to focus and dedicate myself to trying to try I'm trying to improve jiu-jitsu
in MMA that's all I was ever trying for jiu-jitsu not for sambo not for
wrestling not for striking I'm jiu-jitsu pure blood pure blood and so that is
the misconception
that is it around and they're saying oh he's changing names he's taking moves
and changing the names look that's a wrestling move the twister he calls it the
twister it's actually the wrestler's guillotine
I'm like I didn't change the move Hicken and John Jock changed it because I
would come in and say this is a guillotine I learned in wrestling and they were
like there was already a guillotine that's the front headlock that's a guillotine
so they started calling it twister and I don't know it's not the twister so
then later people
started saying look he changes a wrestling move and he's a fraud he's taking
moves and changing them and he's making all these new positions or these
positions and changing names the only names that I invent like the names that I
came up with were moves or transitions that didn't have names
so in my brain I can teach better and I could learn better with every
transition every position not even if it's a submission every transition every
set up has a name so that I can with my students I can get on the phone and we
have a language that we're talking oh oh otherwise if you're on the phone you're
going you know that one move where you put your hand on the hip you're like
what move I have to show you I have to show you I have to show you I don't know
so for me Americans like naming everything so that's what that's where the
naming process came in
I came up with all these crazy names these stupid names because I was not until
you came back here and then my goal was to put my form over here now there's
more pressure here now right here very hard to do anything and I'm the next
step is to come here and then hug right here and then if you're going to punch
with this here I'm going to be right here already and I'm already holding the
foot and I can control right here very hard to do anything here and then I'm
right here
and then I'm right here see that this is where I'm at you need flexibility and
then if you try to stand up with this leg I'm going to figure four here and
then right here it's over it's going to be very hard you feel that
so that is a way to make it so that you're defensive and they can't punch you
and I'm I'm actually going for the kill I'm not I'm not being defensive I'm
going for the kill and in my experience the bigger the guy I'm like 160 the
bigger the guy is that he's 185 190 and he's a wrestler in my experience the
only thing that works is to get here in time and hug here that I'm right here
this is I'm going to hold on right here
it's very hard for for anybody to do it you then once this book comes over here
and then here very hard really to do anything here
that's the goal and it's really not that hard I play this game against my top
students on the day on a daily basis so the best thing for you to do is keep
both your hands on the chest both of them and then yes that's that's because
now you have an opportunity to maybe posture up you do it so what I want to do
immediately
stand now you can't punch me and now you can't posture because you only can do
it with one arm you understand yeah and then once I grab the other leg here and
clear here very hard you can't punch and I and then I can attack this arm right
here I'm looking at this one right here I could take this arm this way or I
could just right here you can't defend with your right arm because I have
already tracked it and then we're here this is my one of my
go-to arm bar setups and then if it all fails and a lot of times we just end up
here then we end up fighting from here like you survived everything and then
now we're here and then I'm looking to come back to hook here I'm looking to
come back to hook here and take this or you roll and then it's a sweep because
a lot of times a guy will get there and he's like fuck that I'm just going to
roll and then it's a sweep and I go up and I roll with you and then I pass your
guard at the same time with that roll but that's the last resort I'm trying to
go out to the neck or
I'm trying to clear that arm first the neck the arm keep control get that arm
in the way have my forearm on the neck here I'm going to go after that arm or
bring my foot over and hold on to your head
I want to move
I'm going to try to get this arm on the mat if I can't get off the arm on the
mat then there's a different things I can do here I can try to clear the neck
anyways I can try to clear the neck if I can't clear the neck then we can just
stay here and then I could punch and then I can punch and then I can't clear
the neck
here until
he can keep center
yeah he can stall it out
yeah he can stall it out
people can just stay here
and then I can punch
here
until
he can stall it out
until
yeah
if the guy kind of keeps center
yeah
he can stall it out
he can stall it out
people can stall
wrestlers
they always they don't want to stay especially now they want to stay more here
yes
so here
a wrestler is comfortable to hit your spine
yes yes yes
you know
this is a patient game
so that's why I can still work from here and I can still what I would do in MMA
is punch here until you block and then boom now we're here
right
so but the most important thing is to get that hand on the mat before the legs
come up
so anytime you're here and I have the underhook that means whether I'm here or
here that means all I gotta do is bring this up here and now that arm is
already out of the mix
so when I'm rolling I'm always looking for that overhook always as soon as I
get this overhook here boom these legs are gonna come back here
they're gonna be right here and then bam right here and then because this arm
so it all comes from the overhook
even from butterfly guard here if I'm here in butterfly guard all I gotta do is
release and now I'm here
and then and then there's a stacking you have to be patient nothing's quick it
might fail
you might pull out of it but then we go back to it again I just you know some
guys pull out they're sweaty
just like a you're trying to take him down you didn't take him down you set it
up again try to take him down didn't work
like with Joe it takes me four times to get him in anything because he'll pull
out he's seen it so much we're rolling
he'll pull out and then we gotta start again boom he's smashing and then he
pulls out and then we start again
and then boom like on the fourth one boom I caught him the foot's on it you
know it's a battle
so it's just like take downs you keep trying to take a guy down and meanwhile
even though it's failing you can't get hit
you can't get hit because the way to defend it is to stack and stay tight and
not do anything
the way to stop it is don't punch because as soon as you punch unless it knocks
me out that one punch
your hands already on the mat boom
the best analogy that you've ever made about it is when you talk about head
kicks
like if you try to teach someone how to throw a head kick
you know what I can't fucking kick someone in the head how am I going to kick
someone in the head
but you get a guy who's like Maury Smith a great kickboxer it's easy for them
to kick someone in the head
because they've done it so many times it becomes a part of their natural
movement
once you develop the type of guard that he has I tell everybody if you don't
roll with him you don't understand what's possible
once you roll with him his legs are like arms and they're moving in positions
that you don't come to expect in normal training
and until you experience it you don't know the possibilities I think that's the
next level of MMA
I think what he's doing right now is going to be you know we're seeing all
these new like wheel kicks
and new techniques in striking that's the next thing is his guard techniques I
really believe it
and it all started from watching Hanzo do this that's all that I'm like hmm
that's because I was a high guard player with the Gi
no Gi the legs keep slipping the legs keep slipping so it's hard to attack
so then we're like oh let's just keep the leg up here
oh that's feels the the necessity to keep the leg close yes thinking and that
matter is a really is a really effective
but again if the guy try to be defensive is hard for you absolutely I believe I
believe you had to combine some kind of strike some kind of punishment yes yes
with your feet yes with your elbows maybe to create that kind of panic let me
show you the best
what about Jason Day, Jason Day, Alan Elster
this position for Elstruck so if I was here and then I locked the shoulder here
and I'm holding
you okay yeah this position right here if you could maybe I'll do it on Joe but
if you can see this right here
this arm you're going to keep it you're not going to let me have the arm bar
because as soon as you straighten it it's going to be tight
so all I'm going to do is just throw elbows right at the perfect angle to come
down at this angle right here
you can see the pow pow pow that's
you know it's setting up the arm bar
look and this is very common in my in my style right here getting here I'm
keeping this tight
see this position right here I call this muddy watershed he can't do anything
and I have full rain on his elbow
pow pow pow and then boom take the arm this arm is out of the mix this is tight
pow so this is the position I work to get into this could take three minutes to
get into but once I'm here
it's over now slowly bit by bit I have to move this elbow in because how do you
move that elbow in
it's very hard I can't move it in here pow it's so hard he has good posture it's
so wide so what I need to do
is to get my forearm on this side cross my ankles here look at how I squeeze
the elbows
see how it's easier and then I go back to this and then here this is my number
one move that I do all the time
and then once I'm here I don't even need to bring the leg over the face I could
just finish it right here
if he has flexible arms then we take that if I don't want to take a chance I go
this way
you're so interesting that's stuff that I would love to Shokuro
I would love to because he's already trying to do it he's already flexible I
think that would be very valuable
in uh all my guys do this this is standard stuff they're all I got some guys
that are doing MMA
that anytime they're in the court boom the legs come up and guys are already in
trouble
Shinya Yoki he got he's the one who uses it the most if you watch Shinya Yoki
uses a very uh basic version of this
I was in 2000 I was in Japan in 2005 and um I showed him all the stuff he never
seen it before
immediately he starts using it in his fights he starts triangling everybody so
just something that I would love to show Krohn
I would love to I think uh it might be able just in case he's in a bad spot he
fights a wrestler that's on top of him
it might it might be an extra weapon that made any weapon is good yes when we
go to battle huh
thank you very much Hickson for your patience and thanks for your input and I'm
gonna start I'm gonna sleep on it
thank you thank you thank you thank you awesome let's make this again like any
chance

Eddie Bravo explains the Rubber Guard to Rickson Gracie

and like you said the Jiu Jitsu community
uh a lot of them took that as oh he thinks he knows more than us look at him he's
turning his back on Jiu Jitsu and the reason I dropped the gi is because I felt
that every second you grab the collar and grab the sleeve
that's not the same fighting stance as MMA so I thought you know let's look I
