It's Kenan Thompson! | You Made It Weird w/ Pete Holmes

You made it weird. You made it weird. You made it weird. Oh yeah. You made it
weird. You made it weird. Yes you did. You made it weird. Oh yeah. You made it
weird. With Pete Holmes. Yes you did. You made it weird. Oh yeah.
What's happening weirdos? This, believe it or not, is Kenan Thompson. I am so
thrilled, not only that Kenan came on the show, I've been such a huge fan of
his for years and years. We talk about this in the episode, but I think he can
make anything funny even funnier.
He's just an added value performer, hilarious, and you're about to hear, down
to earth, balanced, grounded, and a wonderful, kind, interesting, and fun human
being. So I am thrilled that you are here. I'm so glad you're here, and you're
here. I just said that too many times.
A couple things to plug up top. I am on tour. Next up is Denver, I believe,
followed by St. Louis. I think we're going to be adding Bloomington, Indiana.
All of these things are going to be on PeteHolmes.com. It's going to be a
wonderful little tour. And if you already came to a show, thank you so much.
And if you're going to be in the Los Angeles area, I do a live show once a
month here in LA. Go to Largo-LA.com. Look for Pete Holmes Living at Largo.
The next one is August 5th. They are always the highlight of my month. Always
star-studded with music and comedians and myself doing a nice long set. So that's
always amazing. Go to Largo-LA.com. And if you like the show, why not try a
Pete's Pick? For those of you who haven't heard the show before, we do ads a
little differently. We only do spots for things that I actually use and
actually love. Like, for example, this that I'm holding up for the camera right
now. This is my Apollo Nero. Nero. N-E-U-R-O. Nero.
Yeah, Nero. Like neurology. My Apollo Nero. It's the one piece of tech, a
product, really, that has changed my life the most in the past year, hands down.
Apollo Nero is a wearable that helps your body recover from stress that sends
vibrations into your body. Mine's on right now. It's on clear and focused right
now. I can barely feel it. It's almost sub-perceptual.
But it gives your nervous system the sensation of being touched or held. It's
like a virtual hug that calms your nervous system down and helps you relax,
sleep, focus, or, in my case right now, be more productive.
It's like a wearable hug for your nervous system using touch therapy to help
you feel safe and in control. You can wear it on the wrist. You can wear it on
your ankle. You can even clip it on the inside of your shirt.
Helps you with energy. Helps you feel more social and open. Clear and focused.
Rebuild and recover, which is great after workouts or after stressful
interactions.
Calm, which is awesome for meditation. Unwind. Val and I call that the try and
stay asleep setting. And fall asleep. How great is it? At night, I put it on.
Well, I never take it off. It's on.
I go on my phone. I hit fall asleep and it gently lulls you to sleep by
introducing a rhythm and slowing it down. And gently, slowly, your body gets
the idea. I'm safe and it's okay to fall asleep.
It's chemical-free. Helps with all of these things. Helps with symptoms of ADHD.
Apollo's effects on stress, sleep, cognitive performance, and recovery have
been proven in multiple clinical trials and real-world studies.
It's not woo-woo. It's clinical. It's developed by a neuroscientist and a board-certified
psychiatrist who have been studying the impacts of chronic stress in humans for
nearly 15 years.
You can get 10% off. Support the show. Support your body. Support your mind. Go

weird. 10% off. Seriously, give it a try.
Also brought to us by our friends at Onnit and AlphaBrain. This morning, like
every morning, I took some AlphaBrain. And before this episode, you're about to
hear, I took some AlphaBrain.
What is it? It's a nootropic, which means it's earth-grown ingredients that
help your brain with memory, focus, and concentration. It's incredible for
recall. It's incredible for creative work. It's incredible for conversation. It's
incredible for banging out emails.
It is a huge secret weapon in my repertoire. When I need to get work done or do
anything that involves my brain, taking AlphaBrain, two or three AlphaBrain, 15,
20 minutes before I do it, is a game changer.
I wish I knew about it in college. I'm so glad I know about it now. It's been
years, over six years, that I haven't done stand-up, a podcast, written a
script, or even just gone on a date with Val or just wanted to read a book and
maintain and hold on to more of it without taking AlphaBrain before.
I swear by it. I give it to fans sometimes because I know I keep it in my
pockets. It's so fun. It's so helpful. Game change. Go to Onnit, O-N-N-I-T dot
com slash weird.
You will get 10% off everything you see on that landing page. That's Onnit dot

All right, everybody. Enjoy my chat with my new friend, Kenan Thompson. I can't
believe it. Get into it.
We came in, and the carbon monoxide, I know.
Start off with the carbon monoxide.
Let me give you the standard carbon monoxide update on what you're walking into.
That's you right there.
Is this a new tattoo am I looking at?
Are we rolling? It is.
What did you do?
What did you do?
It's a house on fire and a guy going to kind of put it out by himself.
It's just like a overcome adversity kind of thing.
Really?
Yeah.
And it's new?
Yeah, yesterday.
Yesterday?
Yeah.
We got a dude. Let me see the dude.
Dude with two buckets.
Oh, he's got a hoodie on.
It looks overwhelming, but you got to do your thing anyway.
Go put the fire out.
Yeah, go put the fire out.
Man, isn't that life?
That is life.
We got, I'm going to include you.
Yeah.
I'm assuming there are differences in our life.
I was just going to tell you you're more famous than I am and you've been in a
million things that I love, but I bet we're pretty similar.
We are.
And yet, like 1 a.m. last night I woke up and just kind of started thinking
about all the stuff.
Isn't that when it like creeps in when you're vulnerable?
Who is this bitch?
When you're vulnerable.
Who is this bitch that lives in you that goes like his guard is down and go
like.
Now's the time.
Now's the time.
Remember?
When he's relaxed.
When he's relaxed.
This is the time to stress him out.
It's the paradox of life.
Life is, I mean, I guess you need it for the sake of words like irony.
Yeah, it helps with those, you know?
But past that, it's hard not to let that stuff creep in when, yeah, like you
said, when your guard is down.
And it feels like it's on fire.
For me, if you want to freak me out, like if my brain starts whispering to me,
it's usually work or finances.
Even though if like.
Because you're an adult now.
You're an adult now.
Yes.
Welcome to your adult life.
I have a daughter.
Yeah, absolutely.
I don't have a wife, but I have a wife.
You know what I mean?
I have my daughter in a totally different way than I have my wife.
But even if you have a wife, they're an adult as well.
You know what I mean?
Well, she's my partner.
That's what I mean.
Exactly.
But the daughter is.
The child is like.
A dependent.
That's a full dependent.
That's a full FD.
And it's looking to you, you know, for all of the answers at the moment.
And for me, it's about.
How old is she?
She's four and a half.
She's about to be.
Yeah, I dropped her at camp this morning.
My littlest is turning five on the 31st.
No way.
Yeah.
Very similar age.
Yep.
And then my big girl is nine.
She just turned nine last month.
Oh, my.
It's the best.
Little person.
It's the best.
Little person.
The best.
Because they say, not to bum you out, everyone that listens to this pod knows I'm
about to
say this, around seven is when their innocence sort of goes.
They start to become people, yeah.
They become people.
But it goes back to the house on fire.
Yep.
They get a little sense.
Right now, my job, it seems, is just kind of creating a bubble.
Not a bad bubble.
Yeah.
Sometimes people say bubble in a bad way.
I mean, like a safe, happy place.
Look at kids' TV.
Everything is fine.
And it drives us crazy.
Absolutely.
Because we're like, this isn't real.
But they don't know.
Isn't that terrible?
Well, we know the house sometimes.
The Mickey Mouse theme song for like the Mickey Mouse.
Hot dog, hot dog, hot diggity dog.
It can drive you crazy.
And it's like, why?
Are we talking about hot dog, hot dog, hot diggity dog?
We are.
Hot diggity dog?
Come on.
Come on.
Goofy in the background.
And it's just a marathon of it.
And the kid loves it.
And it's doing you a favor.
Yeah.
But, man.
Yes.
It runs up your spine as an adult.
Because, yeah, you're like,
this isn't how the world is.
Yes.
But stay innocent.
Boop.
And until they say around seven.
For you, for me, for everybody.
Not just your baby.
Because when I talk about my daughter getting disillusioned or leaving the
garden or whatever
you want to say.
They say it usually happens around seven.
There's some disappointment.
Something shatters.
There's a tear in your nylons.
I don't mean literally.
But, like, that happens.
And it's never the same.
It's the communal of the kids.
They start being around more kids.
Especially if they go to school.
You know what I mean?
Yes.
They just start sharing more information at such a hyper pace.
Yeah.
And sharing behaviors.
You know, that you don't show those kind of behaviors to your child.
You know what I mean?
Because you're always on your best behavior.
Dude, if you saw what I apologize to my daughter for, you wouldn't believe it.
First of all, I've never heard my dad say I'm sorry.
Right.
It's never happened.
So you're trying to be different.
I'm trying.
You're trying to move the chest piece forward.
He moved it forward to give him a little credit.
He moved it forward.
Yes.
I'm moving it a little more.
And I'm like a pawn I go to.
I'm going to give myself that I go to.
Exactly.
This is the future.
But I just, was it this morning?
You can't say.
But, like, this morning, oh, it was last night I was putting her to sleep.
I was rocking her.
I knew she was overtired.
So I knew we were right on the cusp of, like, this could be, like, a tantrum,
like something that she doesn't even like.
Yeah.
So I'm really trying to get her to be tired and I'm rocking her, telling her a
boring story.
You know, in the stories.
And they found a cave.
And it was warm.
It was a warm cave.
And dark.
A warm cave.
You could hear droplets of water.
I do that.
Echoing in the background.
I do that.
I go.
Yeah.
You could hear the wind.
Set the stage.
Dude.
It's fun for you.
It's fun.
Because you're a performer.
So that's fun for you.
It is.
And this isn't why I do it.
I do it because it's fun for me.
And I want her to be entertained.
Sometimes I tell her a story so good that her eyes go wide.
Yeah.
And she won't.
And then I have to be like, and that's when they realized.
Yes, you've triggered something.
Pull it back.
And then I have to be like, oh, my God.
Pull it back.
It was a desert.
Very dry.
There was nothing much to do or say because the day was done.
And everybody was going night, night, night, night, cactus.
Oh, my God.
You see the genius of Good Night Moon.
The best.
Good Night Moon.
The best.
People tease Good Night Moon.
I don't.
You bow down to Good Night Moon.
Recognize.
Recognize.
Recognize any chain.
That's right.
If it was good enough once and it's done it 15, 20 times, it's a solid idea.
That's right.
If people are ripping it off with like, have a good one chair, like that's
because Good Night Moon set the standard.
That's right.
Have a good one chair.
That shit works.
It settles the kid, especially like kids in cities.
You know what I mean?
It helps them process like what they've been seeing all day, especially in New
York.
Like, oh, you take a kid around New York around October, they might see some
wild shit.
We just took, thank you.
We took her to some Halloween parade.
Yeah.
I forget where we were.
It wasn
