Kathleen Madigan | You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes

You made it weird, yes you did, you made it weird, yeah, you made it weird,
with Pete Holmes.
You made it weird, yes you did, you made it weird, yeah.
What's happening weirdos? This is Kathleen Madigan. Kathleen Madigan, overdue
episode.
I've been a fan of hers for many years. She is so funny. Go to KathleenMadigan.com
if you want to see her on the road.
She's going to be in Charlestown, West Virginia, Portland, Maine, Atlantic City,
San Antonio, Texas, Austin, Texas, Ohio, all over Ohio, Ontario, Hampton, New
Hampshire.
All of those are on KathleenMadigan.com and her new special, her newest special,
Hunting Bigfoot, is on Prime Video.
She's also got specials on Netflix like Bothering Jesus.
She is incredible and she is a delight and I'm so glad that we got to sit down
and laugh together.
I'm so glad you guys are here to enjoy what we did with us, right?
Come on, it's fun. I'm glad you're here.
PeteHolmes.com, likewise, for my tour dates, I'm going to be in, just outside
of, I believe I'm going to be outside of Pittsburgh.
Is that correct? Is that Pittsburgh? Yeah, Pittsburgh.
Had to go to my own website.
Houston, Texas, I'm going to be there July 5th through 7th, August 30th through
September 1st, I'll be at the Pittsburgh Improv.
And then after that, October 4th through the 6th, I'll be at the Milwaukee Improv.
So I hope you can be at those.
This new hour is so fun to do and it means so much when weirdos are there.
And I'm also going to be at Largo, the next Largo date.
Let me look it up in real time.
Go to Largo-LA for tickets.
The next one is on Wednesday, July 17th.
Those are always incredible.
Judd Apatow was at the last one.
Sandler's been at them.
Kumail, it's so fun.
Dimitri Martin, it's so fun.
Hope you can be there.
The next one is July 17th.
In the meantime, enjoy this chat with my wonderful new friend.
I'm going to say it.
Kathleen Madigan.
Get into it.
You're getting afternoon, Pete.
Oh, what happens with that guy?
I'm just much sunnier in the morning.
Oh, really?
And then around this time of day.
And I'm only saying this to bring it back to you.
No, it's not really that.
I know, Jody's afraid.
It's just more that I get like, I'm drinking this.
I need a boost.
I get a little more pinched.
We need a beer.
Well, I think we have one American beer right there down at the bottom.
Great.
I'll take that one.
Do you want it?
Yeah.
All right.
I'm not kidding.
It's been a long day.
Yeah, you came from Comedy Bang Bang, which I don't care for.
Not the podcast.
I don't care that you came straight from another podcast.
Well, don't care about that.
It's just, it doesn't matter.
Look at that.
It could have.
You know how to college open that.
I am just not an improv person.
It's not my thing.
Jody.
I'm not.
You look like the Pictionary sketch of a person who knows how to open a beer
without a bottle
opener.
Canadians do this.
Go in the door jam.
Don't break their door.
Is that what they're doing?
I go in that.
Oh, you don't have an empty lock.
Oh.
Oh.
Jody, you can also just bang it on the fridge.
Why not?
Wow.
Should I not have my foot on this couch?
Is that all right?
Is that the vibe you're getting?
No, I don't know.
Jody just champagne, super bold.
She just champagne your whole foyer, whatever, middle.
She's super bullshipped.
Oh my God, Oase.
Yeah.
Yeah, no, you.
What beer is it?
It's a Lefe.
Okay, great.
It's from Belgium.
Oh, wonderful.
Are you, you're pretending to know what that is, right?
No, I just saw blonde ale and I was like, that's fine.
Yeah, right?
Yeah, I don't know what a Lefe is.
Nobody knows what Lefe is.
What is it?
This is a real NPR feel, like there's doors opening, there's beers opening.
Yeah, but we don't have the soft guitar music that NPR has.
Or like drum and bass.
Yeah, all of it needs an upgrade.
You think so?
You think NPR needs an update?
No, the background music needs an upgrade, upgrade, upgrade.
What are you specifically talking about?
Are we talking about This American Life?
There's a very fine line between the guitar player at the Masters and the
guitar player
at NPR.
I see.
What NPR show are you listening to?
Whenever I turn it on.
I don't even...
Are you just flicking on the radio?
Yeah, NPR.
Yeah.
Make that look not...
I mean, sometimes it's a show, sometimes it's just them reading the news or
whatever.
Yeah, sure.
But they have like...
Now the other extreme end is...
Oh, sorry.
It's morning radio.
You're a stand-up comedian, man.
I know, but I don't ever hold the mic.
What do you mean?
They don't pay me enough.
You put it in the stand?
It stays there forever.
I've never touched it.
Really?
Yeah.
And I'm not walking around.
And I'm not moving.
I'm not moving.
I'm standing up.
Yeah.
Just stand there.
That's what I'm paying to get...
Yeah.
I believe it brings the focus in more.
But it's also...
But it's also...
If it's in the stand?
Well, if I don't move.
I've...
Oh.
But I didn't do that on purpose.
It's just how I was comfortable.
But then over time, I really do think you pay more attention, in my mind, if I'm
not moving.
To something that's still...
Yeah.
Well, think about Mussolini.
Exactly.
Is he moving around?
Well, Hitler did a lot from one spot.
He was not a mover.
He got a lot.
He was a lot of this, a lot of this, a lot of that.
But the feet were planted.
Yeah.
I don't remember Mussolini.
I don't think he moved either.
No, no.
They were podium guys.
Stay at the podium.
Stay at the podium.
Stay at the podium.
You go crazy.
Did you start...
Where did you start stand-up comedy?
At the St. Louis Funny Bone, which is still there.
Yes, it is.
Yeah, the Westport one.
Have I done the St. Louis Funny Bone?
Probably.
Everybody's got to at some point.
Right.
They had two at one time.
You may not have done the one in South County.
You've got South County Funny Bone, and you've got Jon Hamm, and you've got the
Budweiser Brewery.
Well, and the South County Funny Bone, as a youngster, I was totally excited,
because
John Goodman is from St. Louis.
Is he?
I saw him in the same parking lot, because it was a theater, an AMC theater,
and he was
taking his mom to see King Ralph.
He was taking his mom to see his own movie?
Yeah, but I think she wanted to see it.
She was old, and I think it was sweet.
Nobody here thinks John Goodman was being a jerk.
That's amazing.
That was a wonderful thing.
It's a wonderful thing.
Look at him on a Tuesday or whatever open mic night.
Tuesday, Mad Men, taking mom.
Yeah.
Do you know how often I reference King Ralph?
To this day, in my act currently is a reference to King Ralph.
Really?
I don't know if I've ever seen it, but just the image of Johnny Good.
I've only seen bits and pieces on a plane.
Yeah.
Because I like him, so I don't know, but yeah, that's our claim to fame.
So you're more of a John Goodman than a John Hamm St. Louis.
John Hamm I did love in, recently, what was it, where he played the rancher guy,
like a
Yellowstone guy.
Oh, True Detectives season.
Fargo.
Fargo.
Fargo.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, not True Detective.
He was awesome in that.
He was awesome in that.
Yeah.
I don't really know other stuff.
I'm not really good.
I gave up on, go ahead.
I'm not really good with, like, I didn't really ever watch Mad Men.
I know you're not supposed to say that.
No, I think it's okay.
I don't know.
You're just flipping on NPR with an antenna up.
Fuck, and going, can we get a different guitar player?
That's all I'm asking.
And your lip, well, can I tell you the...
First of all, thank you so much for being here.
Yeah, it's nice.
This is way better.
Right?
Yeah, yeah.
Studio's nice.
You provide a dog and a beer.
There's a dog and a beer.
It's fucking great.
Katie, will you make a note to get more beer?
Because you're...
You're the end of the day.
Yeah.
It's happy hour.
Well, we usually do this at 11 a.m., but we've still had a few guests...
Well, I would do that, too, but not if I had a bunch after.
Well, one, I'd have one beer.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's fine.
I'm going to say that the thing that I find most interesting, other than your
wonderful
new special, which is called Hunting...
Bigfoot.
Bothering Bigfoot.
Bothering Bigfoot and Hunting Jesus.
Hunting Jesus and Bothering Bigfoot.
It's wonderful, and congratulations.
Oh, thank you.
And other than that, apart from that, I should say, the thing that I find most
interesting
about you is that you have a farm and you live in the Ozarks, and I want to
talk all about
it.
Oh, okay.
Well, did you see the show?
What show?
Ozarks.
No.
No.
In fact...
Really?
As a point...
You didn't want to.
I was like, I reject this.
I was thinking about it, because I did my research on you.
And also, a song came on the radio, well, on the Apple Music, and the band was
the Ozark...
The Ozark Mountain Daredevil.
Yeah, the Ozark Mountain Daredevil.
They're from, like, the 70s.
Yeah, I know.
Yeah.
That still counts as good.
My hair and that band...
Right count.
...can both be good things from the 70s.
I'm just saying...
No, but it's a synchronicity.
I'm coming to talk to someone who lives in the Ozarks, and on shuffle, I just
tell Apple
Music, play Yacht Rock, because it gets me peppy in the Cranky Friday 5 o'clock-ies.
Yacht Rock gets you peppy.
What?
How many times can you listen to Sailing by Christopher Cross?
It hasn't come up.
I'm waiting for Sailing.
How about Toto?
Are you into Africa?
Yeah.
You want to hear it?
And my little dog, too.
I'm into Africa.
It takes a lot to drive me away from you.
Oh.
There's a hundred million more you can ever do.
I used to listen to Yacht Rock a lot on the road, going, like, at night,
driving to the
next gig, and then I realized they only really purchased B-sides, and they only
purchased,
like, 50 of them.
Who?
Serious.
Oh, you mean, like, you listen to the Serious Yacht Rock, and they didn't have
the hits?
Yeah.
Well, and I don't even care, but they bought 50 B-sides, and then we're out.
Yeah, yeah.
There's no more B-sides.
They're like, we can buy one A-side or 50 B-sides, and they want 50 B-sides.
Yeah.
And I get it, but you should have saved enough money for 50 more.
Can I ask you a question?
Yes.
James Taylor Yacht Rock, question mark?
Is he?
Because he comes up on my Yacht Rock station.
I don't think it should be.
I don't think he should be either, but there he is.
He should be Americana, or folk, or...
Can I also say this?
Classic.
Classic rock.
Yeah.
Classic.
Not rock.
Rock?
That's what Glenn said what it says.
Adult contemporary, classic, adult contemporary.
Adult contemporary, for sure.
Yeah.
Dentist pleasant.
Folk rock.
James Taylor looks furious.
Most of the time.
Yeah.
I saw him at a spa once.
Yeah.
He needs it, right?
Well, his face looked better than mine.
I don't know what he's doing, but he looked fine.
You mean...
His skin.
I know he came in.
How was his...
I got a free gift certificate and some bag for doing some charity deal, and I'm
like,
huh, where's this?
And it happened to be right in West Hollywood.
I'm like, oh, go over there.
And I saw this man walk in, and I'm like, wow.
There's James Taylor.
That's funny.
James Taylor, yeah.
I was...
I don't want to say nothing.
I didn't say anything, because it's L.A.
You can't.
Did you just say, I don't want to say nothing?
Like a child that I pulled out of class?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And you're like, who put the cherry bomb in the bathroom?
You're like, I don't want to say nothing.
I didn't do nothing.
I don't want to say nothing.
I don't want to say nothing.
That's just the way I talk, and I haven't even been drinking.
I feel like I saw your essence.
And it's James Taylor, but I don't want to say nothing.
Don't say nothing.
Kicking a rock.
I would have kicked you if you would have said, I'm going to go...
I would go, but fucking don't say nothing.
You leave slabs alone?
You leave them alone?
99% of the time.
Yeah.
Sometimes it might go over the edge.
Who's the one?
Here's the one.
John Goodman.
King Ralph.
He's always 20.
Back in the day, he was 20 Budweiser's in.
It was totally fine.
He's the nic
