Ryan Holiday | You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes

You made it weird, yes you did, you made it weird, you made it weird, you made
it weird, with Pete Holmes.
You made it weird, yes you did, you made it weird, you made it weird, yeah.
What's happening weirdos? This is the incredible author and friend Ryan Holiday.
I think this might be his fourth or fifth time back on the show.
And as always, he is brilliant, engaging, funny, and very insightful.
His new book, Right Thing Right Now, right thing right now, is incredible.
It's in his Stoic Virtue series.
He was talking about courage, he was talking about discipline, and now he's
talking about justice, but in a very interesting way.
I love this book. We talk about it. It's deeply emotional to me.
It says on the front, Arnold Schwarzenegger is the pull quote here.
It says a message all of us need to hear, and I really, don't worry, I do the
impression in the actual episode.
But I think this is a message all of us need to hear, so check it out.
Justice, as Ryan says in this little letter that came with the book, is the
North Star, the moderating influence on all impulses and actions.
It is not just justice in the justice legal sense, it is personal
responsibility and character.
So that's what this book is about.
It's about character, good values, good character, and good deeds.
I can't recommend it enough.
It's one of those books that if you listen to it or read it, you just notice it
throughout the day.
You carry it with you, and it changes the decisions you make.
It changes how you behave in a good way.
And that, of course, will change your life.
So check out Right Thing right now.
Check out all of Ryan's books.
He's so incredible.
But start with the new one.
Let's shoot that thing up.
It's already shot up the charts, but just check it out because it's amazing.
Do it!
Do it!
Why are we still talking about this?
All right.
Enjoy the episode, guys.
I have some tour dates.
They're all on PeteHolmes.com.
We just added Madison, Wisconsin.
I'm about to be in Houston, Texas.
Go to PeteHolmes.com for all those tour dates.
I'm going to be at Largo here in Los Angeles, July 17th, August 16th, September
5th, and 26th.
Go to Largo-LA.com for tickets to that.
That is always the highlight of my month.
Hope to see you there.
All right, everybody.
Get into it.
Nice shoes.
Thank you.
I'm not even a shoe guy.
I love those.
I'm not either.
I like shoes that don't have laces.
No laces on them?
Well, you don't tie them.
You just pull on this thing.
I don't like bending.
My whole life is about not bending.
Have you ever worn a Nike free run?
Is that the one where you...
I have like breaks in half.
It breaks in half.
And then you slide it in.
If it made a sound going on, it would be...
Yes, I have those.
Yeah, I love those.
There's even those...
There's like an Instagram company, like they're like old man shoes.
Oh, yeah.
They do the same thing.
That's like their main feature is you step in them.
Something happens.
I used to have a joke about this where I was like, now that I'm in my 40s, I'm
obsessed
with socks that don't roll down.
Like, especially if it's one sock.
Isn't there just like a...
This wasn't part of the bed.
I'm just telling you this.
When you're standing and you're talking to another...
I'm going to say it's even worse if you're talking to another man.
Like a put together man.
And one of your socks is secretly slinking down.
Don't you just sort of feel like a bee?
What are those things that used to...
What are those things that you see in like old-timey movies?
See, it was a big problem.
The like garter belt for the sock.
Yeah.
How humiliating must it have been to put those on every day?
Or was it cool?
How good was the marketing?
Yeah.
Because it's...
Is that a big problem?
Like your socks are falling down?
Well, maybe this is...
When did elastic get invented?
I mean, I feel like it's all enmeshed in like the rubber horrors of the Amazon.
Yes.
You know what I mean?
There's some other scandal.
Some dark side to elastic farming.
King Leopold's ghost was, you know, was about the...
You are so right.
What are those called?
For people that don't know, we're talking about...
You know, on Mac Men, you'd see them.
It's like a garter for socks.
A garter belt for socks.
It is a garter belt.
Is that what it's called?
Sock garters.
Not sexy.
The not sexy garter.
No man is out of a night.
The man at the wedding isn't also throwing his sock garter to the...
If you catch it, it means you're going to die alone.
But with high, high socks.
Yeah.
But I guess elastic probably wasn't...
To start on a positive.
Yeah.
Because I want to get into justice.
Sure, sure.
I wanted to get into ethics and stuff.
But it is...
Like, it's cool that...
You know what I'm feeling like, you know, we're both wearing Nikes.
They might have questionable practices and all this stuff.
But to say something positive, we live in a world where you can get, like, nice
shoes and
socks that stay up.
But so the key with it, you just get them from, like, a reseller, so you're not
buying them
new.
I see.
What do you mean?
Like Nikes.
They are questionably made.
But I feel like if you're buying them secondhand...
This is interesting.
This is an interesting conundrum.
It's slightly less bad.
Because they already made them for somebody else.
You, my friend, have accidentally...
It's like you're touring around the mansion of my mind and you just walked into
a room that
I spent a lot of time in.
Yeah.
Unbeknownst to you.
Yes.
Meaning, I'm a recent new vegan.
I took about a two-year break from being a vegan.
Yeah.
And I really enjoyed it, to be honest.
And then eventually, really, it's weird the way the mind works.
One day I was just like, I'm a vegan again.
Like, it just was as clear as day.
It was like, I don't know.
It was like remembering a part of myself.
And I was like, I'm back.
And I'm back.
Anyway, we could talk all about that.
But then, like, I hadn't eaten all day.
My daughter and my wife are not vegan.
If my daughter makes a choice like that, I want it to be her choice.
Sure.
And all that sort of stuff.
And I encourage her certain ways.
Blah, blah.
But she got a cheeseburger or something at a hotel.
And I hadn't eaten all day.
Yeah.
Literally.
And she did not eat this cheeseburger at all.
Yes.
And there it is.
Yeah.
And it's so...
It's funny, the stories we tell ourselves.
We go, this is wasteful.
It's going to go in the trash.
It's going to go in the trash.
Yeah.
But there's something called a freegan.
Yes.
You know the freegans.
Yeah, they eat them out of dumpsters and stuff.
Or they'll eat it at...
Yes, that is the bad PR of the freegans.
Oh, but it's really just like, hey, you already slaughtered this chicken and
you're going to throw it away.
I can't help this one.
Sure.
It's like if I'm at an event and they're serving a buffet of chicken and you
know it's going to go in the trash, you'll eat it.
Sure.
Because you're opposed to the slaughter, but now that it's over, you're not
disgusted by the product.
So that was one of my questions.
Some of the things I'd like to ask some of the spiritual teachers I like is,
what is your attitude towards a cheeseburger?
Yeah.
A lot of them are vegan.
Would you not eat it?
Like, is your attitude disgust?
Like, not to start on such a heavy thing, but if it was Golden Retriever, both
of us would be disgusted by it.
If the shoes were made of a Golden Retriever or if you're eating a Golden Retriever.
I meant the burger was ground Golden Retriever.
We would, our attitude is very easy.
We would be disgusted by it.
Furry slippers.
Like Mr. Burns, see my gopher, loafers, former gophers.
But since it was beef, I'm not disgusted.
I did eat, I ate it.
Yeah.
I ate it.
And I didn't even, I didn't feel bad about it.
Yeah.
You know, it's weird too.
There's all like, I think when people think of philosophy, they think of like
these insane questions that you can't possibly answer.
Yeah.
And then you get all like twisted up and then you're just like, nothing matters.
You get paralysis.
Yeah.
And, and that's like, like, do you know the trolley problem?
No.
Okay.
So the trolley problem is.
Oh, trolley.
The trolley problem.
I maybe heard of it.
It's just like philosophical question.
Okay.
There's like, um, a trolley is heading down a track and it's going to run over
five people.
But if you walk over here and pull this lever, it will go this way and run over
one person.
Do you do it?
So if you do nothing, you have no blood on your hands whatsoever.
It's just the thing that's happening.
But if you engage.
Look at my face.
I'm like on the edge of tomorrow.
Tom Cruise is immortal in my mind.
So you, you pull the thing and now you're intentionally killing one human being.
Another person who was previously safe.
Yes.
Yes.
You killed him.
Yes.
But you saved five people.
And so you think about it.
And then there, there are like thousands of papers have been written on this
thing.
Yeah.
It's like one of the perennial questions of modern moral philosophy.
But it, it's like, I feel like part of it is a way of just turning people off
to philosophy.
What, because first off, that's like, the irony is like, not only the
complicated part is like, first off, that will never happen.
But also in the course of your, your day, you make something closer to these
decisions.
Like about like, Hey, do you buy this thing made in a sweatshop?
Do you support this politician?
Do you drive this car?
You actually do make these ethical decisions that have, if not as direct as
five to one, still do have consequence.
So it's these way of just like getting this sort of masturbatory and
sensationalizing impossible questions, as opposed to just like, Hey, like on
average, do you try to make conscientious, empathetic questions?
Well, you've turned into a meme or like a form of entertainment.
Yeah.
And it is paralyzing.
Yeah.
And moments like that, like, I, I like saying I'm an imperfect, whatever I am.
Yeah.
I'm like, I'm imperfect.
I like saying I'm an imperfect vegan.
Yeah.
That is a moment.
Sure.
Sometimes I'll be giving an interview and I'll tell like three stories of
things that I had eaten recently.
And they were all like animal stuff.
And I'm like, they have a word for this.
It's not a vegan.
But in my mind, every single one of them is something that I would stand behind
and be like, no, I'm 99% of the time a vegan.
We just so happen to be having these little moments.
But people don't do well with this nuance.
Well, actually, it's not that we, we just, we don't do well with nuance.
It's that we seek out the nuance as like, it's like a math equation where if
you like cancel out these variables.
Yeah.
So you go like, I'm vegan.
And then you go, well, what about this?
And it's like, I, it's like, if I can throw a bunch of weird edge cases or
exceptions to you that makes your thing like seem complicated or contradictory
or whatever.
Then I don't have to change the decisions in my life or I don't have to, I don't
have to credit you with it.
You know, it's, it's this way of just like, uh, letting yourself off the hook.
The debate.
I didn't watch all the debate.
Uh, I watched some of it and we don't even have to, it's not that show.
People don't tune into the show for the hot takes on the debate.
But I noticed what you're saying really brought it to mind, which is when they
were talking about abortion and, you know, I was going to like, as a strategy,
what Trump was doing.
I was like, this is a smart strategy.
He just kept saying they allow post-term abortions.
Yeah, that's not a thing.
They just kept saying like, there's a guy.
And even when he said it, the story kind of got away from him.
Yeah, exactly.
But every time he said, he was like, there's a guy in Arizona, beautiful guy.
He says, put the baby aside, we'll see what happens.
And he took that to mean like, we'll kill the baby.
But like human beings are that way.
Like you're saying edge cases.
Yeah.
That's, that's the headline.
If you can go like Joe Biden, in everyone's mind, even if you'
