Joey McIntyre is here! | You Made It Weird!

You made it weird, yes you did, you made it weird, yeah. You made it weird,
with Pete Holmes. Yes you did, you made it weird, yeah.
What's happening weirdos? This is a dream come true. This is Joey McIntyre.
Joey Mac from New Kids on the Block, which was huge to me, and still is huge to
me.
I mean, I love talking to Joey so much, and his new album, Freedom, which is
out now. You can stream it now, whomever you stream your records. Check it out,
I loved it, I listened to it multiple times, including on my way to this chat,
which is why I'm referencing it so much in our conversation, but check it out,
it's called Freedom, it's Joey McIntyre, you can find it, I believe you.
Apple Music, Spotify, get it on there. It's got heart, it's got soul, it's got
hooks, it's got rhythm, blues, beats. It sounds like I'm making fun of it, I
mean it.
It's got rhythm and blues and beats. I just don't know how to talk about it,
but you should check it out. It's called Freedom. Also, you can come check me
out.
I'm on the road. Thank you to everybody that came out to all the shows recently
in Utah, Vancouver was amazing. Thank you to all the Canadian weirdos that made
Vancouver so much fun.
My next show is March 4th at Largo here in Los Angeles. After that, April 5th,
also at Largo in Los Angeles. Then I'm going to be in Atlantic City in April,
followed by Austin, St. Louis, Nashville, Irvine, California, San Jose, and
Royal Oak, Michigan.
This is a new hour, if you saw me in any of those places recently. I think we're
going to call it the PG-13 tour, because it just so happened to come out fairly
clean.
So it's mostly clean-ish, you know, but not boring. That's important. There's
just not a lot of F-bombs or dirty, dirty, dirty, but still very, very funny.
I'm really happy. It just kind of happened organically. So I hope you can come
out for the PG-13 tour. I'm excited to be announcing those dates here on the
podcast.
All of them are available on PeteHolmes.com.
All right, everybody. New kids on the block? What are you fucking nuts? How did
this happen? 12-year-old me is shitting his pants, and 45-year-old me is also
shitting his pants.
This is awesome. What a pleasure it was to sit down with him. Shout out to my
man, Adam Ray, for making it happen.
Check out Joey on tour online, Joey McIntyre, M-C-I-N-T-Y-R-E.com, and follow
him on Instagram.
But most of all, check out Freedom wherever and whomever you stream your music.
All right, everybody. I can't believe it. Get into it.
That's the sound.
I love it. Look at you. You got your Skyscape here.
Skyscape.
Skyscape.
Now I'm going to have to change my Netflix password. Skyscape. No, Skyscape is
right.
Skyscape.
That wasn't judgment. That was like way to pull Skyscape, kid. Skyscape.
It must be...
Like a landscape, but skyscrapers.
Right.
Look at that.
How's it going? Yeah, that's all for you. You feel okay? We're...
It's all for you.
That's your favorite song.
Can I have my stuff here?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Should I like put it behind? No, no, no, no, no, no.
No, it's no look.
The mug.
It's no look.
It's no look. My wife has so many of these.
It's bad.
Yeah.
People can't stop and they're like, it's for the environment. I'm like, you
have 50 of them.
Right.
No, it's...
We have two big draws that were supposed to be like pull out fridges.
Yes.
But...
Now they're filled with...
Privileged alert.
We already had two freaking fridges.
And we're like, what do we need?
Oh, but you want your cream right there.
You know?
I've seen Airbnbs that have the drawer fridge.
Yeah, yes.
And they're fun.
But we're like, no, we're all set and thank God because...
Yeah.
We have 18,000 of these.
Yeah.
That go there.
And the lids get lost.
The lids and the straws.
And the straws are gone.
The straws are...
Are we rolling?
Because this is the good stuff.
This is the good stuff.
This is the good stuff.
This is the good stuff.
This is the good stuff.
Always recording, right?
Never not recording.
For someone like you, never not recording.
Never not recording.
Always on.
There's a guy...
People love people that are always on.
There's a fantastic drummer I was privileged enough to work with.
His name is Charlie Drayton.
And he's...
Turn your fucking phone off!
Phone off!
What is this?
What are you in a barn?
What is this?
You were raised in a barn?
Adam Ray just called me back because I called Adam Ray.
I was like, "Hey, your buddy's got me standing in the rain here."
He's like my inside...
I did text you.
No, thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I didn't look.
You know, I was so excited.
Yeah, you didn't look.
I wanted to...
I was late already.
No, no, no, no.
Where were we?
Anyways.
So important.
Charlie Drayton.
Drama.
Charlie Drayton.
Charlie Drayton.
Charlie Jayton.
He's one of those, you know, drummers...
There are some drummers that feel like they're musicians.
You know what I mean?
Because we can just say, "Oh, you just keep the beat."
But this guy is bad to the bone.
Yeah.
And worked with everybody and I was lucky enough to work with him years and
years ago.
But I always remember he came in and went right in and played the track and
frickin' went at it.
Yeah.
And then the engineer, he was like, you know...
We weren't recording.
And he's like...
Is that what he said?
Yeah.
He said, "We're not recording?"
Yeah.
He go, "We didn't get that one."
He thought he was just getting sounds.
He was like, "Bro."
Dude.
Oh, he's in the red, man.
Always.
Yeah.
What is lost?
Yeah.
I shoot things.
I know you act as well.
On digital.
Just keep rolling.
Keep...
Right.
Why are you cutting?
Right.
Oh, we got to save the film.
Yeah.
Oh, the development costs are really hurting the production.
Right.
SD card.
Frackin' roll.
Frickin' two more seconds on CapCut.
You know what I mean?
Like, come on.
You know.
You can't afford two more seconds on CapCut.
Come on.
Come on.
You can't...
Yeah, that's a big thing for me.
Yeah.
The alt in the alt world, right?
The alt world.
You have to be an alt guy.
You know, the alts, you know, at the end of the take.
Oh, you gotta do alts.
Yeah, do alts.
Two alts.
You got eight alts.
At all times.
One of my favorite showbiz, it's self-serving, but who cares?
Please.
That's what we're here for.
Self-serve.
We're here to serve you.
Freedom.
That was the name of the record?
Thank you.
Thank you.
Freedom is the name of the record.
It's one of my favorite tracks.
Thank you.
It's great.
It's fantastic.
Thank you.
Who cares?
You don't care.
I frickin' care.
That's why I'm here.
That's why I care.
I also loved...
We're here 'cause we care.
Other things.
Yeah, thank you.
And I love Miracle.
Those were my three favorites.
Thank you.
I wrote down my three favorites.
Thank you.
Cause don't you hate like a non-specific compliment?
Well, you know, I understand.
Hey, tell me your favorite line.
You know, we're in the biz.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know what I mean?
Sometimes...
But you don't want another great record, Joe.
Yeah.
Right, exactly.
So when I was really...
Yeah.
Something really like moved me.
Miracle was very moving to me.
Thank you, yeah.
I also found she to be very moving.
Thank you.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You're such a sweetheart.
I think I'm a sap.
I liked all the kind of the emotional ones.
You know what I mean?
You don't...
I'm not out there grinding my denim dick.
You don't come from the pages of Teen Beat without being a little sappy.
Pete.
Ripped from the pages of Teen Beat.
It's Joey McIntyre.
Don't lie.
I've always been ripped from one thing to another.
You know?
This guy was ripped from the pages of Teen Beat.
Ripped out of the choir at St. Thomas in Jamaica Plain.
Oh, JP.
Torn.
Oh, you should've kept...
Thrown into a boy bin.
You were at 12.
Shot out of a cannon.
You know, I'm saying a lot of that lately.
Shot, torn, ripped.
Yes, yes.
No, you had no agency.
It's a lot of trauma.
You had no life.
Shot, torn, ripped.
You had no life.
You were abducted into...
Well, we don't have to go into that.
Do you feel that way?
A little bit?
No, it's okay.
It's okay.
You're therapized, Joey Mac.
You're therapized, aren't you?
I am.
I just came from therapy.
Oh, good.
He's a good guy.
You know, I always would be like, you're really kind of good therapist.
I mean, you can't really, you know, but...
Wait, what do you mean?
Oh, I have a great therapist.
Yeah.
Well, they're not easy to find.
They're not easy to find.
Because you can sit there.
Yeah.
And not that I've done a ton of it, but periodically.
And sometimes it's just like...
Good for you.
This guy is just...
Yeah.
Just sitting there listening.
It's not Gary Penn, is it?
What's that?
His name isn't Gary Penn, is he?
No.
My therapist in LA, Dr. Gary Penn, whose book is available now.
I always plug him.
It is a Gary though.
It is a Gary.
You gotta have a Gary.
Gotta have a Gary.
If your therapist isn't named Gary, get the fuck out of there.
Yeah.
I'm also doing parts work therapy now.
Have you ever heard about that?
Internal family systems?
I thought of parkour.
It is like parkour.
It's a lot like parkour.
Wow.
No, I'm proud if any man from Boston can go to therapy.
Yeah.
You know what I'm saying?
Yeah.
I'm like, I'm just gonna be extra stubborn about the men.
I think where we're from.
Right.
Maybe you don't agree.
I do.
Cause you know, the real, the real, it's relax.
Yeah.
Relax.
That should figure it all out.
Also compare.
They're like, it's not as bad as it could be.
Right.
And you're like, what the fuck?
Like, especially in your situation.
Yeah.
I can hear Everett going.
What do you got to worry about?
Yeah.
Go cry on a bag of cash.
Right.
Oh, oh, oh, oh.
Yeah.
Go sing that.
Until you feel fucking better.
Well done.
No.
No.
Well done.
No.
Cheers.
Go.
Oh, that song.
Cheers.
That's me saying.
That looks like we're touching.
Yeah, yeah.
We're docking.
Can we say that?
Is that wrong?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
You cut?
Okay.
You circumcised?
I am.
Well, then we can't die.
To dock, you need...
Oh.
To dock?
Yeah, that's when two uncircumcised wangers become one tube.
Wow.
You know when you see buildings with like a tunnel between them?
Yeah.
It's like that.
Like in Minneapolis.
They get them everywhere because it's so cold.
It's too cold.
I can't believe you knew.
How cold is your town?
Well...
You can't go outside.
We have a docking tunnel.
We build bridges to the buildings.
The buildings have uncircumcised penises that we walk through.
That's true.
But I...
We won't get it.
I do want to talk about a little of that.
Yeah.
Sure.
But without...
Maybe not up top.
I don't want you to feel like we're gonna go deep.
No!
What about the kid and the thing and the...
Which one?
The drummer?
You mean my history?
No, you being plucked into this.
Yeah, yeah.
12 years old.
Did you say plucked?
Plucked.
We've got another verb.
Plucked.
Torn.
Plucked is a gentler term, but plucked, yeah.
Tiger Beat.
Yeah.
Teen Beat.
I wanted to buy those magazines when I was a kid, but I thought they were for
girls only.
You'd be gay.
Yeah, you'd be gay.
That's what they would call it.
You'd be branded.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But I really did want to buy one.
Yeah.
And if I had any female friends...
They were fun.
Of course they were fun.
They were pictures of your fucking heroes.
And by the way, Alyssa Milano was in there too.
You could have told everybody, "Hey, I'm trying to buy it for these guys."
I read it for the Milano.
Yeah.
Debbie and Alyssa and...
But I wanted...
I told you this when we were first introduced by the great Adam Ray.
Yeah.
Is I was so into you specifically.
I like the new kids.
But I realized as I was doing some light research, just so I wouldn't ask you
things...
I'm dusting.
A dusting.
A cursory glance into your catalog.
I was like, "Oh my God.
I didn't even remember all of the new kids."
That's not to say...
That's no disrespect.
How dare you.
But I was around your age.
Yeah.
That's why I wanted to read Teen Beat.
I was like, I wanted to know what you were having for lunch.
Or like what you looked like on the bus, just kind of fu
