Lucius is the best band you've never heard of ❤️ | You Made It Weird

You made it weird. You made it weird. Yes, you did. You made it weird. Yeah.
You made it weird. With Pete Holmes. You made it weird. Yes, you did. You made
it weird. Yeah.
What's happening, weirdos? This is Lucius, one of my favorite bands. They are
incredible. Who are they? They are Jess Wolff and Holly Lasig, better known as
Lucius.
They are wonderful. They are here to discuss so many wonderful things about
music, about art, about life, about parenthood. It is interesting. It is funny.
And I'm glad you have joined us.
They are currently on their Gold Rush tour, which will be at the Wiltern, which
is the intersection of Wilshire and Western. I never knew that. I found that
out like a year ago and it blew my mind.
The Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles on November 21st. Tickets are available at
their website, ilovelucius.com.
You can also check them out wherever or whomever you get your music from on all
of the streaming platforms.
And I sincerely, sincerely recommend that you do. In fact, their new song, Thick
as Thieves, has just dropped.
Let's give it a listen before we jump in. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Lucius.
This is Thick as Thieves.
We were looking for something. Wanna be the winner just for once.
So we'd run under the bleachers. Everyone was cheering and pretend it was for
us.
Oh, pretend it was for us.
All right, everybody. We are so glad you're here. On my end, not too much to
plug.
I'm just going to say a couple of the tour dates before we jump in.
November 1st, I'm going to be here in Los Angeles at Largo, followed by Chicago,
Pittsburgh, New York, New York, Atlantic City, New Jersey.
We got the Milwaukee Improv, the Brea Improv. We got San Francisco just added
coming to Cobbs on January 8th.
North Carolina, South Carolina, Miami, Marks, Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in
Royal Oak, Michigan, Marks, and Madison and Denver.
All of these are on PeteHolmes.com. Hope to see you guys out there. In the
meantime, enjoy my chat with my wonderful friends of Lucius. Get into it.
I don't want to ask how old you are, but I'm right there with you, and I don't
want to assume that it's an eyesight age thing.
Yeah, I mean, I have terrible eyes. I'm wearing contacts. I have bad eyes
anyways.
Oh, you just had bad eyes.
But now they're just getting, like, the tiny words are, those are going to you
now.
I can't do it anymore.
But after you drink this.
After you drink one magic mind.
We're not supposed to say this, but it'll restore your vision.
Yeah, I did wear this for you, Jess. And we are rolling. Is that okay?
Yeah.
We'll get all of this.
I'm one of those people that when I watched Comedians in Cars getting coffee, I
just wanted to see how they ordered.
Like, how they ordered breakfast. Like, I didn't care about the interview.
So how you, like, come into the room and get settled is so much more
interesting.
Yeah.
Here, hold this.
What was the most surprising breakfast that you remember from that show?
I think they're faking it. I think everybody's full of shit.
I don't mean in a sinister way, but when Alec Baldwin was on it, they ordered,
like, pancakes and shit.
And I'm like, this is for the camera.
There's a specific L.A. thing that the very fit, body-conscious actor type,
when on camera, we'll eat peanut M&M's as a flex.
Oh.
I'm not saying that's what Baldwin was doing.
I'm just saying I don't buy it.
Remove the cameras. It's an egg white omelet.
You know what I mean?
Camera's on. Man of the people.
Right.
I will have the, you know, French toast.
Right.
Right?
Yeah.
No me gusta.
Well, we won't fake it when we go for breakfast with you.
Oh, thank you.
Yeah, we'll just order the things that we want to order.
Eat it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Just eat it.
Well, I'm really, touch, is this intentional, Jack?
No.
What are you, oh.
I don't think we've ever gotten an internet clip in the first 30 seconds of an
episode before,
but watching you both realize that it wasn't intentional, that you're, that you're
top-bottom parent.
You don't do anything intentional.
What are you talking about?
That's not true.
I saw you ladies open for, not open, support, War on Drugs, who were opening
for the National.
You were there?
I was there.
It was the National.
You had to grow up.
Yeah.
I can't handle it.
I can't handle the sweaty ass.
Oh.
Oh, really?
Can you relate?
I feel like I'd be bothering you if I was like, can you come say hi?
No.
No.
And we know Matt, too, but I won't do it.
You are?
Yeah, that's right.
You're old friends with Matt.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I love him very dearly.
Yeah.
Can I tell you something that because you like the National, too?
Yeah.
Right?
Yeah.
I'm assuming.
Of course.
What if you hate them, Holly?
You kind of were like, yeah.
Stop.
Don't do it.
I have tears of laughter from the earlier moments.
Anyways.
Her brain hasn't been reclaimed yet.
I, this is also being in my 40s.
I do know and love Matt, and I just got into the National's first records.
I never liked them.
Cherry Tree, I think, is the first one, and Alligator.
I just thought they weren't for me.
And now, having enjoyed everything else they've done, I've gone back and been
like,
these are some of their best songs.
I love them so much.
Yeah.
And then younger Pete would have texted Matt and been like, hey, man, it's
probably, who
cares?
But I've always told you I'm like a boxer forward National fan, which I have
told him that many
times, which is weird to share.
And I'm like, I was wrong.
But there is something, and I am putting this back to you.
Oh, great.
Yeah, no, this can't, don't you do it.
Don't let me monologue.
There's something about, I really like being in my 40s, where I just play it
out.
I'm like, I don't really think that's about him.
I don't think I really care that he knows that I like those records.
I think it's about him validating that I exist somehow, and I just let it go.
That feels like age.
I just go like, it's okay.
I hear that.
I hear that.
But also, as we get older and we tour the way that both of our bands do, I
think having
people that you respect, recognize or acknowledge, or something that you do
that resonates is
meaningful.
You think so?
Oh, yeah.
I do.
I think when I do say things, like, you know, I went back and I listened to
this record,
I just want to tell you how moved I was.
Yeah.
Or what it, I don't know, it just resonated in a certain way.
It always comes with a positive, like a touched response.
A nice, okay, see that, I can be in that space where I really am just, it's
like an overflowing
of love where you're like, I really just want to tell you, I'm just a little
suspicious of
little pity going like, do you want the rock star to text you back?
Is that going to give you a little hit?
Also, also, also, also, that's okay.
You are friends.
You are friends with the rock star.
I know, I know, I know.
You're friends with the rock star.
You're friends with the rock star.
I know, and rock stars, come on.
I'm rock stars.
I haven't, well.
Although you didn't text me at the Hollywood Bowl.
Well, here we go.
I can't handle it.
It's too risky.
Oh, we're old pals.
Come on.
It's too risky.
I was invited to your wedding.
I know, but you did not attend.
I did not.
But not for lack of want.
We were on tour.
We were on tour.
Tell me about touring.
Let's start there, because we won't forget how you and I know each other and
your matching
pant jacket.
I want to start there with touring.
Yeah.
What is it like?
Are you guys touring?
Do you mind being called guys?
No.
Yeah, go for it.
I can also do bros.
Yeah, I prefer bros.
Do bros.
Yeah.
Are you enjoying touring?
This is something that I can't wait to talk to musicians about.
Yeah.
I've been touring too much, a little bit too much lately.
I'm just curious, your strategies, your feelings, everything.
Tell me everything about touring.
Touring with children.
Yeah.
Oh, you're bringing the children.
That's been the newest chapter.
How old are your children, Holly?
Mine are four and one and some change.
Oh my God.
Yeah.
That's a lot.
That's a lot.
I mean, you tell me.
Yeah, yeah.
But my joke, when Lila was four and we were thinking about having another one,
we were like,
I've never been like, I wish there was another kid here.
And you have another one.
I do.
You've got the two.
I think you can't think about it too much.
Yeah, I know.
Just kind of die right.
That's the whole thing.
Yeah.
It's a non...
Your brain doesn't get to cum.
It'll never make sense to your head.
Yeah.
Do not drink these before trying to have a child.
You need magic hearts.
They do have a magic heart.
It's a...
You need mud.
You need mud shampoo.
Eat the shampoo if you want to understand parents.
Yeah.
So you bring your baby too.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, go ahead.
Yeah, we share a nanny on tour.
Is it Alice Cooper?
Yeah.
Keep it in music.
I did say Manny.
We have a Manny.
It's Alice Cooper.
He just likes the vibes.
He'd be great.
He would.
So on a bus?
On a bus.
On a bus, yeah.
We got a whole set up.
One of the bunks has a mesh zipper thing.
It becomes...
Like to keep them in?
Uh-huh.
Yeah.
And padded walls in case of...
Sharp turns.
Yeah.
We always answer in unison.
I like it.
By the way,
this is going to be a Simon and Garfunkel comparison-free interview.
I want you to know that.
Okay.
Thank you.
Can we be sophisticated enough to hear two people singing and not think, oh,
Simon and Garfunkel.
I'm going to edit that out.
Do you get that from a lot?
I know I'm all over the place.
Honestly, never.
Oh, really?
Never got that.
I was listening to you.
I was like, whenever people are singing and not aggressively harmonizing,
meaning pretty similar.
I know you're harmonizing, but not aggressively.
No, we're more aggressive than that.
What do you...
But then them?
Yeah, we're more aggressive.
They're going for like the same note.
Yeah, yeah.
But I still got a slight SMG.
Oh, we've gone Everly Brothers.
Oh.
Which is, I feel like, sort of in the similar realm.
But never Simon and Garfunkel.
What was the really weird one we got?
It was like a female version of...
Here it is.
Yeah, it was like a metal band.
Well, not metal, but worse, worse.
Punk?
No, no.
Female version of...
Oh, my God.
It's on the top of our tongue.
It'll come back later and I'll just shout it out.
It'll come up in the conversation.
Is it certain S?
I don't know.
It'll come back.
System of a Downs.
No, no, it wasn't System of a Downs.
Oh, I know who it is.
Taking Back Sunday.
No, it was...
Oh, fuck.
What if it was them?
That would have been awesome.
Wasn't System of a Down?
It was something like that.
It was something like that, but Pete would know this.
P.O.D.
Okay, where were we?
Avenge Sevenfold.
Oh, children.
Avenge Sevenfold made you remember your children?
Avenge Sevenfold.
I don't know, yeah.
I don't know what they sound like.
Avenge Sevenfold?
Yeah.
I don't either, but based on their name.
I don't...
Probably not a dentist artist.
Yeah.
Probably something you listen...
Dentist.
After the dentist.
Yeah.
To get that rage out.
Yeah.
Unless you're getting a root canal.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Maybe that'd be great.
Yeah.
Could the music mirror the feelings a little bit better?
It's so relaxing.
Yeah.
I mean, like, we like relaxing music during massages.
Like, wouldn't we want...
Extreme music during intense.
Yeah, that's true.
Because you're aspiring to feel how the music is.
You want to be in here.
Or, like, match something outside of yourself.
It's like when you're giving birth.
Don't you want to hear, like...
Yes.
We played a lot of Beyonce.
We are the champions.
Beyonce?
A lot of Beyonce.
A lot of, like, power.
Like, I would.
Right?
If I was, like...
I can't even...
I'm not even trying to be funny, but, like, a boulder up a hill or something,
as close
as I can imagine.
I wouldn't want to listen to, who can say...
I would want...
Does Sean want that as his funeral march?
Our long-time producer.
Once only time?
He wants...
He wanted that song.
Yeah.
Cute.
Enya, right?
Enya?
Enya.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Anyway, yeah.
Pretty funny.
Okay,
