yes siri i don't i don't want to embarrass you but i've admired your career and
especially the
second part of your career with this uh injury and the the surgery and the
comeback and you're
truly a ball player because when you came across there and i said hello to you
and shook your hand
you patted me on the butt i appreciate that thank you very much um you did didn't
you make me feel
like an all-star that's what we athletes do yes siri i don't even know where to
begin first of all
congratulations you must be thrilled that you've come through this situation
you must feel pretty
good now actually i feel great uh i don't consider myself i i consider this
year the the best fun i've
had doing my job in all of my professional and every aspect of it turned out
nicely although the uh the
socks didn't get into the series they didn't win the pennant but they came very
close so that must
have been gratifying yes it was we knocked on some uh doors to let the people
know that
we are there and we will be back next year all right for sure good for you
how did you i i'm i'm assuming now and correct me if i'm wrong your real name
maybe is not bo is that
the name you're my nickname's bo my real name um my mother back in the 60s her
favorite tv show was uh
dr ben casey right and his real name is vincent edward and she named me vincent
edward after
dr ben casey so how do you get from vince edwards to bo bo is a nickname like i
said everybody from the
south has a nickname and uh in the south a wild pig is called a boar a boar
sure and that symbolizes
he's very tough mean ornery and i was i had that temperament so i was like a
john gaudy of my
neighborhood so and the southern people don't say boar hog they just say bow
hog so that's how i got that
me do you uh do you miss football at all no no not really and i can say that
honestly because um
at the time that i got injured my wife and i we were contemplating about me
retiring i had one more
season left with the raiders but with the kids and everything getting old
enough to start school
it's just not healthy for them to be in school in the midwest you were busy
year round then
weren't you pretty much moving them back and forth you wanted to spend more
time with your family
obviously of course how long did you play football i played football for four
years four years
professionally and thank you heisman award winner is that correct heisman
trophy winner in 1985
so you really have had uh like two careers two very very successful satisfying
careers huh i have
enjoyed um my athletic career yeah to the utmost tell me things you can't do
now with your your hip you
you have an artificial hip don't you yes and what what is that made of uh if i
told you that i'd have
to kill you today yeah you're going to tell me i'm going to go tell the russians
is that what you're
well in a sense yes are you conscious of it all the time i mean it's not like
other sports injuries
you have a major structural piece replaced in you yes i do and i never think
about it is that right
i was in so much pain before i acquired this artificial hip tilt um it's so
wonderful to get rid of that
pain that i had to get out of bed and to have to hold on to the furniture to
get from my bed to the
dresser to the dresser to the table over to the bathroom so all of that is
behind you now all of that
is gone now can you slide if it's a close play at the plate can you slide can
you go in feet first
actually that was the main thing that my doctors were concerned about they said
both whatever you
do don't slide on your side that you got your artificial hip right because uh
that was the side
that i that i was used to sliding on and we were playing the pirates at their
park and uh i was i scored
from third base and it was a bam bam play very close and i slid into the catcher
without thinking
probably as an athlete yes without thinking and i slid on the side then i got
the artificial hip
and i was safe and i got up and i was going back to the dugout and i was
brushing my pants
off and i looked up in the stands and people were like
and i'm like damn i just slid on my hip and it didn't bother me no problem my
uh they had to
give my surgeon because he was in the stands they had to give him cpr to bring
him bring him back
around yes now i know you won't tell me what the hip is made of but when you're
traveling when you go to
an airport and you go through the the metal detector do you do you set anything
off actually three weeks
after my surgery it went off once uh in o'hare airport and the lady they check
you i told her
because you get a metal card you get a card like a credit card that you show
the people at the airport
saying you have an artificial hip oh cool i'd like to have one of those but she
didn't believe me at
the time and i'm like because i hate going through the airports just traveling
period and i'm like
there's nothing on me and she's checking me and so i said do you want me to
pull out my pants and show
you and she called the guy over to say you check him because she didn't believe
me oh man uh do you
have to wear special pants for that hip or is it no no that's good how roll the
videotape and talk to
me about this bo as you see tell us what's going on here there's when you're
with the bingo man alive
do you do that much uh there's another hunk roll that tape the other second
half of this there right
here right over the head well um you get frustrated when you know that there's
a picture out there that
that you can let me just let me just try this is there a trick to this at all
no you just have to
be very very angry well i'm steamed i'm pretty steamed tonight left or right to
make any difference left
yeah man look at that pretty clean break
uh bo as i mentioned before i've uh i've i've loved watching you play both
sports and i couldn't be
happier that you're back doing it and you're happy and healthy thanks for being
here thank you very
much see you next year thank you very much
bub jackson kids we'll see you tomorrow night bye bye everybody
