welcome to the show thank you you look lovely thank you you know i don't i don't
really know
how old you are but you look like a kid when i say walking across the floor
like that i said my
gosh she's looking younger and younger and more kid-like as the years go thank
you yeah how you
doing you all right well yes and i love when you play that song for me oh julia
that's one of my
favorites sending it out to you with love thank you hey so what's this uh time
like uh for you got a
big uh look i got one of those things too i gotta look at band-aid here look at
that yeah we're bonded
by band-aid yeah i know yours is one of those flexi no mine's from you get like
a subway manicure don't
waste your time uh this must be very exciting uh time and probably a little
nerve-wracking for a
person like you get the big film opening up right here in the middle of the big
summer film season
yeah are you excited you nervous i am excited i i guess i'm a little nervous
but i'm just you know
hoping and praying for the best is this the most exciting part of your job like
right now waiting
for this thing to open or is starting a new job the most exciting part of your
career truly this moment
right this second is the most exciting part of my job
that's nice thank you very much i appreciate that no but i'm being completely
serious it's been over a
year since we've spoken i know i always get nervous because uh i don't need to
tell you this many of the
top stars will come and see us and then they never come back so i always get
nervous that you might
not come back or sometimes they sit in this chair and they just don't come back
yeah sometimes they
sit in the chair and don't leave we've had that happen too so it's very very
gratifying because um
i'm very fond of you you know i know we met years and years ago i think when
you had just done the mystic
pizza yeah yeah so um now tell us about oh they're the big premiere the other
night how did that go
it went very well we had we got great response and people responding to the
film they like it they
enjoy it yes and i put on a fancy dress and the whole thing now what is
required of you at a
premiere do you have to get up and say a few words before they roll the film no
just you know show a lot
of leg and smile wow well you couldn't do that tonight
that's awesome it's too cold in here to show i know it's silly but now uh i'm
reading um that you
were escorted uh to the the function by lyle lovett well that's just wrong
you and lyle weren't there together no lyle came to the premiere bless his
heart you know i like lyle
he's a nice guy he's a nice nice guy and a great musician yes oh man incredibly
talented yeah just as
good as it gets believe me yeah so you were there together so that means that
you're no no no no you're
not there together i'm sorry i went with rupert everett one of my co-stars all
right he's the guy that
plays your boyfriend in the or do you can i say that no he doesn't play my
boyfriend he plays your
pretend okay you haven't seen the film obviously maybe i have the name wrong
dermot dermot mulroney that's the guy plays my best friend who i'm helplessly
in love with right
rupert everett plays my best friend second in command who is also my editor
right
who plays your boyfriend in the movie baby i don't have a boyfriend in the
movie
don't you have like a pretend boyfriend in the movie yes let's just give it all
away yes at one point
at one point in an attempt to uh sort of make dermot realize how much he loves
me i tell dermot that
rupert and i have a sort of evolving relationship that goes beyond work let me
ask the judges can we
accept that yeah
do i get like dinner for two at your house hey yeah dinner for two oh my god
sure well
the lines of my house are a little long yeah all right um what that was the
question oh so you were
at the that's who you were at the premiere with yes yeah uh and so but that's
nice that you and lyle get
along well yes it is nice because he's a terrific guy yes uh when you were a
kid did you go to
movies a lot to joe were there were certain movies certain movie stars actors
that you really liked
when you were a kid yes
like who um well i was kind of in love with carrie grant like how can you not
be i mean wasn't he
just the best i know have you seen like every movie he's made like nine times
maybe yeah yeah he's
just he brings just like this lovely elegance to anything he really does
absolutely and just so
handsome excruciating and there has there was never and probably never will be
a guy who looked better
in evening clothes than he did you know you put this guy in a tuxedo it's just
unbelievable yes
glorious yeah uh is there is there uh an actor now uh that you think to
yourself uh i want to try
and and behave the way this person might behave you know and just leading your
life leading your career
is there somebody you admire and you think well i wonder if he or she would
have done it this way he
or she done it that way well i think that you fall into maybe a dangerous trap
if you try to
emulate someone else's greatness you know because that's sort of their thing
and you have to find your own
way to get there but like susan sarandon is a person that i greatly admire
in life and in art yeah i just think she's fantastic i get a kick out of her i
like her
she's uh whenever she's on the program she's just uh she's always a little ornery
and i you
know i kind of like that yeah oh yeah that's fun that's fun uh but no i don't i
don't mean
emulating somebody point for point but is there some sort of general spiritual
guide to your life
and career
you
excellent answer
excellent answer
congratulations dinner for two
hey there you go what after 10 years of doing the show it's finally paying off
oh yeah because
okay so we were talking during the commercial that i have been on the show it
has been almost
ten years since i've been doing this show right right and do you remember the
time that i was just
walking by while you and i came in just to say hello because and it was my
birthday oh that's
right and you gave me that beautiful painting remember yeah no i don't remember
it looked like
it just looked like someone had sort of thrown up a crayon box on a big canvas
but it was quite
expensive do you remember oh i remember this we were displaying uh displaying
art on paul's uh
organ excuse the expression every night thanks no problem yeah you could put it
that way that's
what we gave him of course do you still have that i do it hangs over my
fireplace and i'm hoping it'll
catch you'll catch on fire
there you go that was my 25th birthday you're just a kid just a kid i do
remember that because it was
exciting because i remember you were wearing jeans that night as well and and
you had one of your
knees was ripped out i believe i was wearing black leggings and a flannel shirt
there you go
like a steel trap ladies and gentlemen like a steel like a steel trap i ought
to be working for the cia
you know uh let's take a look at the clip here from the film okay do you have
who's your best friend

by and say hello you're
