good to have you here nice to be here you're from texas right yes i am you got
people here from texas
in the audience and you're from texas and uh willie nelson is from texas we got
willie here
tonight it's like a big uh texas night yes sir you know willie i do know willie
is that right
with willie well you played at his uh like golf or a course there at the perdonales
yeah what is
that like well it's uh it's pretty leisurely no shoes no shirt required really
um you can uh you
can do everything but take your time you got to play pretty fast is one thing
and uh and why is
that with willie why can you why don't you have to take your time i think i don't
know man they play
kind of as many holes as you can play until dark i guess he played the daryl
royal friend of ours
down there so as many holes you can get but it's also like if you get you hit a
ball behind a tree
if you just take a drop of a yard away they think you're pretty stupid for
doing that something called
i think a willie wedge or something you got to throw it out in the fairway and
then they call that a good
drop i see so you just keep playing don't make any difference kick the ball
anywhere you want
if the lie is no good knocking around it's a pacing are you a pretty good golfer
i'm decent decent
golfer good high school golf oh is that right you're on the golf team in high
school yeah and and willie
willie is he all right i mean speaking of a golfer he's got a hell of a putting
stance man they call
him the one-arm bandit and he puts with he puts with one arm one hand and what
is it what is he doing
with the other hand you know what that's a few other things i mean sometimes he's
he's rolling things
up other times was it like six months ago you were arrested was that was that
or am i thinking it was
longer than that it was like late october but now what was the deal on that it
was you're at your home
in texas yeah i was at home yeah doing what austin texas i was uh playing a
little music
uh banging on some bongos what what time of day was it 2 37 in the a.m so said
the report wow on a
monday morning so so the police come they knock on the door you let them in
what happened well um no
i don't they didn't really knock they came on in and i yeah and uh i looked up
and saw two you know
that familiar figure and it's blue and you go oh that's a cop oh i'm going to
turn this down yeah
running out and said uh what the hell are you doing in here and before i knew
it i was kind of cuffed
and put against the wall whoa yes and has this happened before it has not
happened before and and
and what what what about how did it happen why did it happen this were you
doing something wrong well i
i was playing the music a little too loud and i was playing my bongos a little
too loud and what
happened i think i i left a couple of windows open in the back backyard and i
had a couple new neighbors
that i didn't get to know yet and i think um i think it woke them up and well
not everybody loves bongo
music you know some do some don't that's kind of subjective and to me it
sounded good it sounded good
yeah and you were you were naked is that also i was i was buck naked
wow how about that
it was a cool austin night 68 degrees had all the doors and windows open you
know it was a full moon
there was everything it just feels better too you know see see this is this is
one way you and i are
different i've never done that uh i understand i understand how it might happen
i just haven't gotten
around to it yet but i will i uh and and were the police did they know who you
were were they nice
about it um well they weren't too nice about it i mean no i don't think they
knew who i was
until actually yeah there was uh he went through my my wallet on the uh on the
table and i remember
the cop did have a little bit of this oh well look at what we got here oh no of
course when you
are naked you have to keep your wallet on the table it's one of the drawbacks
so they they take
you they take you in they take you to the lockup they take me to the lockup
that took a while to
get there um but we did get there and i was in the lockup for about nine hours
nine hours yes i was
had you ever been in jail before first time yeah what was that experience like
it must have been
harrowing uh no it wasn't that bad i mean nine hours in a texas jail ain't that
bad oh yeah we had
we had some entertainment and we had some entertainment along the way um there
was uh i know one thing
is i went in pleading injustice i'm screaming at the top of my lungs i shouldn't
be there
while i'm there you know a few other people get brought in through the night um
and i noticed that
my plea was not original everybody has a different version of why they shouldn't
be there yeah now
were you frightened did you think oh this thing could go haywire and i could go
away for a long time
well you know what i took the leap to say i'm probably gonna be all right
playing bongos naked i
don't think it's in the book it was one of those ones i was like i did think
about it though on the way
out i said well man do i have something that i should really feel bad about
should be and i was
like well mom's not gonna like it that i was in jail but i really don't know
what i can blame myself
that's right it's not like anybody was hurt here absolutely and and like the
old i like the old joke
did you talk to the other prisoners about why you were in there i mean is this
like um no i didn't
know i never got a visual but i i heard them and when we we uh we sang a little
song we sing a couple of
songs we did while away the time we did the things that yeah the things i did
all those i mean i think
i even got up and was going through things and i did the shadow boxing you know
and uh um and then we
uh there was actually there was actually one lady who came in and uh she was
pretty tuned and uh she
was she was she was griping about not getting her breakfast uh oh yeah
breakfast i want my damn
breakfast i want my damn breakfast and i was going and so i'm done and i'm giggling
and i and i had
had been there about the eighth hour and i was getting a little tired and i
said
you want some scrambled eggs and there's this beat there's this beat that's how
he goes
you can hear the sheriff's stuff started laughing so i say uh you want some
pancakes
and she goes she goes damn right no i don't want my damn pancakes i want my
scrambled eggs
i don't want to i don't tell you how to live your life but it's not nice to taunt
the other prisoners
i had two cells away man oh boy well but everything's all right right i mean it
was
like a 50 fine and that was about it yeah the judge looked at it and threw
everything out and said
i think she kind of felt how i felt we said how do we get from a noise
complaint to
now the guy's in jail yeah we got from a to d what happened to b and c b and c
didn't make too
much sense to anybody so i paid 50 and gotten a few laughs from it did you
learn anything from this
experience yes shut those damn windows to the neighbors that you don't know you
know
uh and the movie is uh it's a submarine movie a world war ii uh thriller isn't
it yes yeah it's
called u-571 it's it's like an old school hollywood film and then it's uh world
war ii and it's uh
got a lot of great characters and a great storyline but it's got the the pop of
like a really great
action film as well were you know were you actually shooting in a submarine we
had uh submarine models
and then in rome life-size subs we had two in rome and then we had one in the
mediterranean sea
that we took out that was actually built around a deep sea fishing boat so it
couldn't submerge but
we took it out to sea and that's where we shot our exterior so did you get a
sense of the claustrophobia
that life must be in a submarine pretty much i mean you know you had to you had
your trailer
stuff to head to afterwards so it wasn't anything there's heroin and of course
the bongos yes good
to see you matthew nice to have you back with us welcome back to freedom yes
