Thank you for being here.
Thank you.
Lovely.
How you doing?
Very well. How are you?
I'm all right. How's the summer so far? Good?
The summer is good.
It's been a slow summer so far, but a big event is coming up.
Which is?
My younger sister is getting married.
Oh, congratulations.
Congratulations to her. She gets married this fall.
And I am in charge of planning the bachelorette party.
Oh, well, there you go.
Now, this is like a thing, isn't it?
Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, you might not be familiar.
Maybe you're familiar with them.
Well, I've never attended a bachelorette party,
but I certainly know from the movies and elsewhere
that it's a big deal now.
It's a huge deal.
It's taken on, like, a great importance.
And I'm a little nervous because the last party
that I planned for my little sister did not go very well.
What was that party?
It was a party 20 years ago.
Yeah.
And my sister had...
Is that her first marriage?
We don't have much to celebrate.
Once every 20 years, we really bring up.
So my sister had gone to visit my grandma
for her spring break in Highland Falls, New York,
and the last word she said to me were,
Ellie, don't mess up my room.
Great. Easy.
She was gone a week.
The day she got back, my little brother Billy,
my friend Katie Purcell,
we thought, what a nice thing to plan
a welcome home party for her.
Good idea.
Good idea.
Baked some cookies, made a card,
decorated her room.
Mm-hmm.
So nice.
Is that the picture we have here?
Yes, I think you have a picture of...
Let's take a look at this.
This is from 20 years ago.
There.
This is the welcome home.
Welcome home.
It was not her birthday.
We just had that.
Sure, you just had it.
Yeah.
Don't throw anything away.
Never.
All right, so this is going to be
a lovely surprise for your sister.
She gets back, and here we go.
What happens?
So we say, oh, Carrie,
can you help me with some homework upstairs?
Whatever it is, whatever the ruse
to get her upstairs.
And she is not happy about the party
because in her eyes, we've messed up her room.
In my eyes, it's art.
In her eyes, we've messed up her room.
So I think you have a picture of her reaction...
Let's take a look.
...to the party, which is...
She is not happy.
Do you know who she reminds me of, Dave?
No.
Your Satan dog.
I don't know if you...
Oh, Sully, yeah.
There's my boy, Sully.
So, um...
She's going to kill me.
What will...
I mean, give me the broad framework
of the bachelorette party.
What are we thinking about?
Is it a destination kind of party?
It's sort of a...
The destination is St. Louis, Missouri.
And a lot of people here
here from Missouri tonight.
A lot of people from Missouri tonight.
Oh!
Oh, okay.
Oh, show me!
Yeah.
Beyond that, I can't...
I can't tell you much beyond that
because I haven't planned anything.
I'm, like, paralyzed by fear.
Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, food.
There will be.
Uh, barbecue.
Barbecue.
St. Louis barbecue.
Uh, jazz.
Lots of it.
Yeah.
Uh, fun, fun on the river.
Non-stop.
Yeah.
I'm going to be high.
Non-stop.
Non-stop river fun.
Non-stop river fun.
You should, you should plan this.
I would like to attend.
I'm not planning anything.
But St. Louis is a great town.
It's a...
Are you kidding?
It's a great city.
Yeah, no.
Of course you're not kidding.
No, I'm not kidding.
I wouldn't kid about a thing like this.
That's not, yeah.
Uh, and what do we know about the guy she's marrying?
Is he okay?
He, thank you for your concern.
He's wonderful.
His name is Ben Dugan.
He's a writer.
He's, he's a wonderful, gorgeous man.
Okay, well, I like the name Ben Dugan.
Thank you.
So do I.
Don't you think you can't go wrong with a guy named Ben Dugan?
Ben Dugan can do no wrong in anyone's eyes.
I agree with you.
And now Carrie Dugan.
What's the problem there?
Pretty good there.
Yeah.
Is he the kind of guy that would be uncomfortable
if his name was repeated over and over again on television?
I don't think so.
Ben Dugan.
If I keep saying Ben Dugan, will this bother him?
What was it?
Ben Dugan.
No, I think he might.
How old is the guy?
Oh, that's a good, I think he's about 32.
I should know.
How tall, how tall a man is Ben Dugan?
Ben Dugan is about six feet tall.
Oh.
Oh, five, I don't know.
How tall are people?
I don't know.
That's the question.
How tall are people?
How tall are they?
Yeah.
For God's sake, how tall are they?
I don't know.
Now, this movie, I'm watching this movie
and I'm thinking, there's something different about this movie
and then I'm finally reading about you and the movie today
and it came together, what it is about the movie
that I couldn't quite, and then it went off like a light bulb.
What you couldn't get.
Yes, because it's not just a movie.
No, it's much more.
Yes, it's a, it looks like it's going to be a romantic comedy.
Sure, yeah.
But it's like the old movie Airplane version of a romantic comedy.
Thank you very much.
Now, it all came clear.
It all came in a perfect sense and doubly entertaining now.
It absolutely is.
Because it could have been just a romantic comedy
and that would have been fine.
That would have been fine with those people, are you kidding?
But then it surprises you.
Yeah, it does all the trappings.
There's more to it.
Much more to it, many layers.
Let's run down the cast.
Yourself.
Me.
Amy Poehler.
Amy Poehler is there.
Amy, yep, is there.
Paul Rudd.
Paul Rudd.
Bill Hader.
Bill Hader.
Now, you and Bill Hader spent a great deal of time
in a restaurant at a table.
Yes, that's my scene.
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm at a table the whole time.
In fact, the reason I can say this is such a good movie
without feeling like I'm bragging
is that I'm not in it very much.
No, no, no, no.
No, I'm not.
Well, now, if it's...
We keep cutting back to that scene in the restaurant
where everything is being revealed.
Yes.
Now, how long did it...
But it was shot in one sitting, right?
Um, that scene was shot in one sitting.
One sitting.
How long did it take?
It took eight hours.
So that...
I worked very hard and that was my job.
No, no, it didn't take...
Eight hours?
Oh, you're surprised.
You think that's a long time to take.
Well, I know.
I don't...
Uh, uh, yes.
Yeah, I...
Because once you...
Because once you see it,
you'll see I'm in it for two minutes.
You're like, how did that take eight hours?
No, no, no, no, no.
I'm wrong.
I'm wrong.
Uh, you're in it.
The perception is that you're in it
because you're the thread.
The through line.
You're the through story.
Yeah.
So the perception is that you were there
beginning to end,
but you're telling me you were only there for a day
and probably time off for lunch.
There was...
There was a nice lunch we had time off for.
Yeah.
You know who stopped by.
Who's that?
Ben Dugan.
He did!
He did.
He did.
Well...
He's in that night.
Yeah.
So you're saying Ben Dugan is the kind of guy
that can smell a free lunch a mile away?
That's...
That's the Ben Dugan I know.
That's...
You're right on.
The name of the movie is They Came Together.
You're going to enjoy it a great deal.
You can see it in theaters June 27th.
Also video on demand.
Ellie, great pleasure to have you here.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
Good luck with the bachelorette party.
Thank you.
I would love to be there.
I would love to see you there.
Thank you.
We'll be right back with Sam Smith, everybody.
