I know, can you believe that?
No, the light lunch was my idea.
The light lunch was my idea.
I know.
Oh, Mary.
It was hilarious.
Yeah.
All right, well, my next guest,
he's been in broadcasting for over 50 years.
Oh, yeah.
I'm looking forward to this.
Oh, it's great.
The great and wonderful Dave Letterman.
Let's have him out here.
Thank you very much.
Hi, kids.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much for having me on the show again.
That was funny.
What was it?
Light lunch?
Yeah.
Great to have you.
I heard that backstage.
That was great.
How's everybody?
Thank you very much.
Oh, how was your holiday, by the way?
Oh, I spent the Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas
with my brother, my nephew.
That's great.
Yeah.
Oh, I have a photo.
Oh, this is fun.
Here's the group.
Okay, there you are.
That's Michelle, Andrew, Ira,
I forgot my brother's name, and Cheryl.
Cheryl.
Cheryl.
Cheryl.
Yeah, we all are.
How long were you in Las Vegas?
Two days.
Did you gamble?
Do you gamble?
I gambled.
I played crafts.
Did you see a show?
And I saw two shows, Katy Perry and Donny Osmond.
Donny Osmond.
Yeah.
He and Marie are no longer married, right?
They're brother and sister.
Oh.
Oh, yeah.
But Utah.
Oh, no, you can't.
No.
How about you?
What did you do, Paul?
Well, Memorial Day weekend, we celebrate those who have paid the ultimate price
for defending
our great country.
Yes.
So I always like to observe that.
I was in Indiana for the Indianapolis 500, which I always enjoy visiting.
And Mary was there with me.
So we had a very-
So in Indiana.
Yeah, that's right.
Yeah.
Indianapolis 500.
We were there as part of a group.
Anything interesting happened?
Nothing but interesting things happened.
You know, part of the loveliness of the festivities of the Indianapolis 500 is
singing of the song,
Back Home Again in Indiana.
Sure.
And a year ago at a restaurant, we met the gentleman who sings Back Home Again
in Indiana,
Neil Cornelius, Jim Cornelius.
John Cornelius.
Jim Cornelius.
Jim Cornelison.
Jim Cornelison, yes.
That's what you said.
A very nice man.
And we wanted him to sing in the restaurant where we met him.
And then I got scared because I didn't know if we could do that.
Mary thought it would be a great idea, but I was too scared.
So for a year now-
He offered to sing.
It's not like we asked.
Yeah, yeah.
But I was frightened.
And I've been haunted by this for a year.
So this year, back at the same restaurant, Jim and his friends are at the same
restaurant,
and he comes over to visit and to say hello.
And he, in fact, offered to sing a little something for us.
And he's a professionally trained opera singer.
He sings the national anthem for the Chicago Blackhawks NHL team.
And we were thrilled and got to know the guy.
I think we have a, I brought a clip.
Oh, you brought a clip?
Yeah.
This is Jim singing.
You'll see a little bit of him singing Back Home Again in Indiana at the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway.
300,000 people at this event.
Here, take a look at this.
Back home again in Indiana.
And it seems that I can see.
See?
So that's what he does.
That's great.
And we had originally hoped that he could sing this at the restaurant.
What was the name of the restaurant?
Tinker Street.
Tinker Street.
Oh, Tinker.
Tinker Street.
And the food was very tasty, by the way.
Yes.
So, anyway, he comes over and we're all chatting.
And he said, well, and we're talking about singing in front of 300,000 people.
And it was interesting.
And his professional experience.
And he finally says, well, you know, I could sing something for you now.
So, kind of recreating exactly what had happened a year ago.
And so, he did.
And we have another piece of tape to take away.
Oh, fantastic.
Yeah.
Here he is singing.
Roll it, Hal.
So, that was the highlight of my holiday.
That's pretty good.
Nice.
Yeah.
You know what I learned?
What?
Back Home Again in Indiana, traditionally sung by Jim Neighbors.
Jim Neighbors.
Jim Neighbors wasn't even from Indiana.
No.
He was Gomer.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And then they had...
That's a big con.
Yeah, but people fell in love with Jim Neighbors.
Yeah.
And then he's not doing it anymore.
Why is that, Dave?
Well, he's dead.
Well, that's...
And why is that laughable?
Because she set you up for saying that.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, they tried it a couple of times after he passed away.
It just didn't work.
It didn't work.
It didn't work.
And then they had an acapella group from Indiana University.
It's either shaken, not stirred, or cold, not hot, or what was it called?
Straight No Chaser.
Straight No Chaser.
Straight No Chaser.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And then Jim came in and people...
Jim came in.
Oh, my God.
People love this guy.
Yeah.
And it's a big deal.
300,000 people.
Sure.
And then the Air Force Thunderbirds flew over and spread out into a blooming
flower.
And it was so raucous.
Oh, that was cool.
I saw a photo of you looking excited.
Yeah.
It was crazy fun.
Yeah.
Loud.
In that photo, you're wearing a seersucker jacket.
Where did you see this photo?
Online somewhere.
Really?
Yeah.
Hmm.
Cut to a clip.
Not a clip.
Cut to a photo.
Cut to a photo.
Well, listen.
Thank you very much.
I always enjoy being on your show.
Always enjoy being on your show.
Thank you, Mary.
Thanks for both of you.
Good night.
Is that Jim guy from Indiana?
No.
No.
Oh, no, wait a minute.
No, he's from Washington.
Yeah.
But he went to school in Indiana.
Yeah.
Sorry.
You see, we should have pointed that out.
Yeah.
Maybe we can add a little Chiron.
Jim.
Not from Indiana.
Also not from Indiana.
But not dead.
Not dead, no.
