our next guest plays the talent coordinator on hbo's the larry sanders show and
can soon be seen
in the film reality bites with uh winona ryder please welcome to the program
janine garofalo
ladies and gentlemen you know last week and then tonight i want to pronounce
your name garofalo
right but it's garofalo it's mancusi how about that oh it's too late no forget
it thanks no it's
janine garofalo and everybody says jane ann garofalo yeah but why couldn't why
couldn't we say garofalo
you can if you want to that's fine but had i said garofalo would you have come
out
absolutely that's good how you doing welcome to the show thank you for having
me things must be great
for you now huh well actually it's so it's so weird because i can only assume
that when you say that
name collectively the entire ed sullivan theater goes who no no they totally do
absolutely you know
that you did nobody else i mean i don't think it's it's completely true and i'm
not saying that you
know like poor me i'm just being very pragmatic about it and i would assume
people don't know who
i am well i think people now know you from the the larry sanders right plus i
have long i have long black
hair i play paul on that show tell us about that character um she's the the
talent booker on the show
and she's supposed to be very very savvy and like has it all together which um
is this a segue cue for me
you know i'm hardly paying attention well i'm still trying to figure out who
you are i know
i know everyone is i i know that that segue is supposed to go into a car story
that i'm supposed
to tell you can do whatever but it makes me feel uncomfortable doing that
really you know what i
mean sure you know how they make you have all these things janine you can talk
about anything you
want to talk about uh okay well whatever what do you want to talk about uh i'll
talk about anything
you want so you play a talent booker on the show right could you get us melissa
manchester i could
and ann murray and any other earth mothers you want i can get you tell me about
tell me where
you're from what part of the country new jersey so right in the area yeah sure
now they know you yes um is your family still over there yeah they're half in
new jersey and half in
texas wow and completely actually this tonight confirms that i have achieved
something they have
no idea what i do for a living they don't get it at all i actually they're very
very nice people i don't
know them very well i rarely speak to my family they're shocked that i'm
actually chatty you know
they have no idea what i'm i'm like as a person you have brothers and sisters i
have a brother and a
sister what is your relationship like with your siblings uh well when i speak
to them again they're
very very nice i'm lucky to have them um i know they're watching so um but my
sister and i are so
completely different i mean it's like when i have to talk to her this is a
typical conversation with
patty it's like um she has a son and she'll talk about that she goes well you
know um i dropped taylor
off at the sitters and i i'm taking country and western dancing because i hear
it's a great way
to meet uh young professionals and uh taylor did the cutest thing today he he
pointed at a can it
was it was really cute well and these are all important elements of life and my
dad is totally
close i did this movie with winona ryder and i told my dad i said hey i'm doing
this movie with
winona ryder and he goes hey man i love her mom yeah and uh winona i said how
do you know winona ryder's
mother and he goes uh she can sing i said that winona judd duh you know and it's
like
you know he's just you know the only people he knows he loves angie dickinson
yeah how can you
not and she's a neat lady yeah that's what you're saying do you uh now i know
that you did you you
started in and correct me if this is not accurate you you started out in show
business as doing stand
up yeah it was a stand up for eight years yeah that's that's tough it's tough
for men tough for
women but i think more so might be tougher for women well that'll turn you into
a a misanthrope or a
mycentrope whatever the correct is what i prefer there there's i had i had
after eight years developed
nothing but contempt for my audience and you know you cannot do stand-up no
that's right because they
sense that well you know you see like right and then they hate me back yeah but
you see like an ad
on on late night tv for the ray stevens comedy video and you see people howling
and and how can i
perform for them how can i laugh you know try and connect with somebody who
thinks ray stevens is
really funny you know and it's like ray will be here wednesday night
so you know i wound up i wound up uh not liking them and and uh that's not fair
what's the film like
this winona ryder deal what's that uh reality bites it's actually they're going
to try and let me
warn you they're going to try probably to market it as a generation x story
which is like the stupidest
thing it's not it's just that the cast happens to be in their 20s and the
director was in his 20s
and it's just a love story a love triangle story it's just a normal small story
it's not generation
x it's not whatever the studio is deciding they're going to hook into whatever
buzzword and market it
so oh god what am i saying uh but that that larry sanders show is fun everybody
likes that yeah
well that's good that's good and things are going very well for you they're
going okay yeah all right
we have to wrap it up now do you mind well thank you for having me well it's
been a pleasure having
you and we come back again now that we know who you are come back again i'd
love to all right okay my
