our next guest became a youtube sensation for his ability to mimic major league
baseball hitters
ladies gentlemen here he is the batting stance guy dar ryaness welcome to the
show thanks a lot
thank you for being here thanks for helping us celebrate all-star break first
of all uh
i thought you were a kid you're not really a kid no how old are you i'm 36 36
years old even better
tell us about it how did it start what does it become and uh why
like you said most kids imitate their favorite automatic automatic yeah and so
ideally i would
have grown out of it by now and what happened is we're playing wiffle ball in
our neighborhood
and my buddy caleb says i'm gonna film this and put it on youtube right and
that was yeah that was a
year ago now you have uh done this for major league ball players haven't you
yeah it it's wonderfully
out of control it's the least marketable skill in america and we people started
requesting i want to
see my team's video and so we put them all on batting stance guy.com and then
the team's very
literal it was pretty easy so you have to do every lineup in every major league
team in the in the uh
in the baseball you know it was just fun to find an audience that found it
funny yeah yeah yeah it's
it's niche but you have also done it done it for clubs you they bring it down
to the clubhouse and
they do it for teams so that would happen yeah the team started asking me can
you come out and do it so
well i went to dodger stadium and then was doing the pregame show for the dodgers
and i get a tap
on the shoulder that says hey adrian gonzalez of the padres wants to meet you
and i i can't believe
that how would he know who i am so i walk over and he says hey man we watch you
in the clubhouse
all the time can you can you imitate us so with a dodger jersey on and shorts
dressed very similar to
today um the padres semicircle me and are and are calling out names so finally
the manager bud black
says come on guys let's get back out on the field because it was their time for
batting practice
guy guy yells out dude i want to see eucliss and then the manager says okay one
more one more
oh man
now uh are we are we ready to go yes okay now now this is interesting i guess i
think this which
one of these is your your bet these are both either one the goal of all of this
has been to get this
into the hall of fame or to be invited to ken her back's birthday party next
year but either one that's
a uh it's a wiffle ball bet essentially it's in the family of wiffle all right
now gar so you you go
wherever you're going to go and then i can just call out any ball player now um
are you going to call
out the names like you alluded to with joe morgan or willie stardwell i'll just
call out some names
here uh manny ramirez all right so manny i got a chance to meet and talk to and
um i said well
you want me to imitate you from cleveland he's like oh you know cleveland right
and so on manny ramirez
at washington heights in cleveland he was leaning forward kind of like call you
strimsky did at the
very end of his career yeah and then now he's going
his old buddy at the red sox david ortiz yeah so big poppy
actually hugged me at spring training says oh boy you had us laughing last year
i can't i mean
this is
yeah beautiful more of a more of a waddle
cal ripken jr this is this is going back a little bit cal ripken jr i think our
segment is not going
to be long enough to do the 21 different stances that he had at a certain point
yeah he had he had
he had ones that started up high like this uh-huh then went like this right he
did the violin at one
point where he would go like this back and forth he had one time like this he
had one time like this
that's not true that's not true okay but the swing was always the same yeah all
right perfect lovely
all right i i used to think i could do a little of this one especially in the
toward the end of his
career ricky henderson oh really that i stretched upstairs just in case you
asked yeah let's see a
little ricky henderson so ricky came into play right about the time that i
started watching baseball
he would wear really colorful batting gloves and then he would get really
really low like this
and then he would delay a little bit as if to say i'm so fast that you can't
even throw me out on the
grounder he'd go
i there was like a year there was probably a year or two where you were like a
fedora and a pipe i mean
he was very like stylized kevin yuclis all right this is the this is the best
one i think right now
kevin yuclis is the best one and i got to meet him and he had watched some of
the cincinnati reds
did you grow up like in the reds oh yeah okay so he did too and so he said i
can't believe you're
sean casey and hal morris so i asked him a couple questions like kevin why do
you why do you do this
when you're when you're on deck it doesn't look like anything and he said i don't
know i saw jeter
doing it and i kind of thought it was close like my virgin ear like i can't
under you're not yankees
and then joda he said he said yeah i finished my swing like this i said why do
you let go with the
wrong hand he said i saw joe dimaggio do it you can't tell me red sox yankees
so he basically puts
his knees together looks like that sweating profusely with a large hairball on
his chin and he'll go like
this and then he'll go
all right
mentioned uh derek jeter let's see derek jeter all right so derek jeter is
incredibly cool and
he still calls for time but not with his fingers with his wrist each time so he'll
go
and then when he when he takes a pitch he'll take it all the way in like
he'll go back out and takes it all the way in and then paul schaefer's never in
danger when jeter
actually bats but when he finishes his swing he'll usually do this
throw it right at your now here's one uh i remember when i lived in california
watching
this and thinking he had a particularly unique stance and swing rod carew rod
crew that's a that's a
fantastic choice on the twins he was a little bit more up but then he got so
loose when he was on the
angels right in between the first and second pitch often he would fall asleep
for a very short it
wasn't for very long it was very short and they would
they usually adjust his hat it would like fall off a lot of one-handed hits
okay
that's charlie hustle not going to the hall of fame all-time hit leader pete
rose all right well
it's he tries to get down as far as everybody in baseball history except phil
plantier and so
joe morgan all right joe morgan as you did early on he would go around
all right one more willie stargel all right so pop by the way you're you're outing
your age with
all i know selection what can i do my i never get emails for these guys because
a lot of them don't
have email accounts there it is willie stargel
guy ryaness ladies gentlemen look at there thank you your own supply of pine
car my own that's all
all for you my own enjoy the summer nice meeting you garry thanks thank you all
right now ladies gentlemen
