Our next guest stars on the very popular television program
Grey's Anatomy, which airs...
Excuse me.
Which airs Thursday nights at 9.
Ladies and gentlemen, it's the very lovely Sandra Oh.
Tell us about yourself. Where are you from?
Were you born? Your family? That kind of thing?
I hail from Canada.
Hey, Canada.
Are they in a Canadian area? Yeah.
From this small town called Napaene, Ontario,
which is right outside of Ottawa.
And I grew up there with my sister and my brother,
Grace and Ray, my mom and dad,
and started dancing when I was really young
and then eventually got into acting
when I realized that I was not a great dancer.
And the dancing, is it because the parents all thought,
okay, it's time to take the kid to dance lessons?
Oh, no, no. I had a problem with my feet.
Oh, really?
My mom wanted to correct it. I had pigeon toes.
So that's the only reason why she wanted me to dance.
And then she would eventually threaten me
because I also took piano lessons, which I really, really hated.
And if I didn't practice my piano,
she would take away my dance classes.
And did the piano lessons help your feet?
No.
I know.
And my mother always says,
oh, by the way, happy birthday, Mom.
Oh, is Mom's birthday today?
It's my birthday today.
Oh, great.
Add some cake.
Add some cake I can get to your mom.
Oh, thank you.
Make it a very special day for her.
And your first acting job when you were a kid?
My first acting job, actually, it was actually not a job.
My very first acting experience was in school.
I was 10 years old, and it was called the Canada Goose.
Oh.
Yes, it was a little operetta about how great Canadian geese are.
And I played the Wizard of Woe, who made everyone sad.
And, yeah, and the Canada Goose would fly around and make everyone happy.
Yeah, that's nice.
But, you know, in this country, the Canada Goose is regarded as a nuisance.
I understand that.
They're very vicious.
Vicious and messy, and they come, which is nice.
You wake up one morning and you have them in your yard, except that, you know,
Labor Day,
they're still here.
And they don't migrate anymore, and the next thing you know, you have a
thousand of them
in your yard.
You have a big yard.
Well, thank you.
Thank you.
Now, what about auditions?
Do you have to, let's say you get jobs, right?
You go out on an audition, you respond to an ad, your agent sends you out.
Yeah, yeah.
Is that a difficult, it's a hard thing for actors.
I think it's a hard, yeah, it's a very hard thing to kind of put yourself out
there and
fail.
But I always feel like, you know, if you're going to fail, you got to fail
really, really
big.
Yeah.
No, I kind of, I kind of really do believe that.
If you're going to really put yourself out there and risk, you got to risk big,
even if
you know that you're going to fail.
I've had a bunch of auditions kind of like that.
So, so you go in just maybe more than is required and then it explodes or what
happens?
You come in, I think, I like kind of coming in with an idea that maybe no one
else has done
before and they're maybe not used to it.
But then what happens is that they are horrified at what you're doing.
And you feel humiliated for a couple of moments and then you kind of, they kind
of move on.
You have an example of one of these things?
Gosh, I'm trying to remember an example right now.
Because that would be great if you had an example.
Was that what you were doing?
Let's go on to another one.
Let's go on to another one.
Oh, now, you saved, congratulations.
This is great.
You're in the Vaughn's or something, Safeway or Ralph's.
Oh, my God.
Okay, that was hilarious.
Oh, my God.
Okay, no, I do have one.
Okay, so I play a doctor on TV.
I'm not a doctor.
I'm not a doctor.
So, it was like in, like, the inquiries.
A friend said, and my brother sent me this link, and he goes, is this true?
Supposedly, I was in Ralph's or something, and there was a child choking.
And I raced up to the child and hit its back, and a candy flew out, and I saved
the child's life.
Wow, that's great.
Yeah, someplace in the valley.
And that wasn't me.
Oh, I see.
Really?
Was it you at all?
No, it wasn't me.
I mean, there's just some other Asian doctor and scrubs.
You know, there was a time back in the early days of television when if you
played a doctor
on television, you had to be an M.D.
That's a lot of training.
Yeah.
That's a lot of training.
But it was just to avoid this very thing you're talking about.
And the Grace Anatomy is, how many, it's been like three seasons now or
something?
Yeah, we're finishing our third season.
We're like really, thank you.
Thank you.
We're pushing it now.
You say you're pushing it now?
Yeah, we're at the last couple of months of filming, and we start filming in
July.
People don't know what's tough work, isn't it?
So it's, it's, uh, our, uh, our dramas are extremely grueling.
And what will you do now with your time off?
Have some fun?
Go someplace?
I'm just going to sleep.
Good for you.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Great pleasure to finally meet you.
Thank you very much for being here.
Sandra Oh, ladies and gentlemen.
You're welcome.
Thank you.
Thank you.
