My next guest is the first person we've ever had on the show named Apollonia.
She is one of the stars of the film Purple Rain and is also a singer with this
group right here, Apollonia 6.
We have also discovered that she is a former rigid tool calendar girl and many,
many other things.
Please welcome Apollonia Katero.
How are you?
You look terrific, by the way. Thank you for being here.
Thank you for having me.
Now, I mentioned that you're the first person we've had on the show named Apollonia.
Now, that's an unusual name, isn't it?
Yes, it is.
Now, is there, does it mean something special that we should know about or?
Actually, my full name is Patricia Apollonia Katero.
That's thanks to my parents.
Apollonia is Apollo, the sun god, for the god of literature and music.
Simple.
Have you ever run into another Apollonia?
No, never.
Now, where did you first meet Prince?
May I say that on TV? No.
During the auditions, this was about a little over a year ago.
You'd never met him before?
Now, do you live in Minneapolis?
I have a second home there now, but I live in West Hollywood.
Oh, see, I was under the impression that you met in the state of Minnesota, but
that's, well, actually, you didn't meet there, but you didn't live there.
And your sort of relationship has evolved from this, hasn't it?
We are business partners.
It's very important.
You have to separate the business from the pleasure.
Pleasure for us is going for a motorcycle ride, playing basketball, eating ice
cream.
Playing basketball?
He's very good.
I beat him once, though.
Just one time.
Well, he must be very good.
He must be a regular Bob Cousy if he's only lost once.
Now, but you know what I'm saying.
Is there a romantic involvement here?
No, I don't kiss and tell.
Well, no, I'm not, I mean, but just...
We are business partners.
And that's it, really?
Mm-hmm.
Now, in the movie, he mistreats you extensively, doesn't he?
He abuses you verbally and actually physically.
He pushes you around.
Now, is there any of that to the real person?
No.
No, not at all.
What kind of man is he to be with?
Prince is a, he is a very giving man.
He is a, he has a heart of gold.
He is a, he is, no, he is really, he is.
As a heart of gold, eh?
Exactly.
Paul, you're getting married.
I'm crushed.
If you can be there, the stage of the Sands Hotel, on stage,
middle of my show, I'll marry you anytime.
Terrific.
Wunderbar.
Or if you want to be business partners.
Oh, my gosh, yes, siree.
Well, now, where were we?
Where were we?
So, what do you do when you go out with Prince?
The two of you go someplace.
We go dancing.
Basically, we're both married to our music, so we don't really go out.
You know, time is money.
We're making music, making more films.
Are you working on a film now?
I have, actually, two films.
Another one's going to be a musical, and I have another one that's sort of a
crime drama.
So, it's difficult to try to select another musical that's going to be, you
know, equivalent to Purple Rain or better.
You're an actress, and you're a musician, and a model.
Now, which of these would you want to pursue full-time?
A model?
If I was a model, I'd be a foot and a half taller residing in New York City.
I don't model.
I tried.
Well, you weren't.
No, that's not true.
Look at this.
No, listen, if they paid you what they paid me to hold a wrench, I'd hold a
wrench right now.
These people pay very good money.
This is you as Miss Rigid.
Patty Katero, photograph, so on and so forth.
Now, this is, do you know what you're holding there, what tool that is?
I don't know, but like I said, they paid excellent money.
Like, Rolling Stone, save the tool jokes for later.
No, really.
Do what now?
You lost me there.
Rolling Stone, do what?
Rolling Stone made a little comment about this, and they said it wasn't as
spicy as finding a nude photo in my past,
but to save the tool jokes for later.
Oh, okay.
Oh, we are doing a commercial here?
Oh, we're not doing a commercial.
In that kind of a night, I thought there for a second we were doing a
commercial.
We're not.
You're fully stocked here.
You have everything.
Well, yeah, I've got my hands full.
Look at all of this stuff.
I have a special line.
This is you talking about Prince.
I have a special line to call him on at all times.
Special line.
Is that true?
Do we have a special phone line, you call him?
How is that?
Is that like an 800 number of watts?
How does that work?
No, actually, it's a phone that I am able to reach him at all times.
At all times?
You want to try it?
Let's give it a try.
No.
Actually, no.
Actually, he's not home right now.
He's on the road.
He is, probably.
Well, you're being unfair to this woman.
I brought it up, and you can't get a hold of him now, right?
No.
I'd like to.
Okay, so we'll do a commercial and then come right back.
Oh, we do have a commercial.
We do or not?
Oh, we do?
Well, we'll be right back.
Hi, there.
We're back with Apollonia Katero.
And Dende, when you perform on stage with this group, everybody actually just
wears this exotic-looking stuff, don't they?
Exactly.
Yeah.
Now, whose idea was that?
It was inspired by the previous group, Vanity Six.
I decided instead of wearing spikes, I like to wear rhinestones.
I don't wear boots.
I wear high heels.
But actually, it's very fun to work with.
It's very glamorous.
And we don't wear it to sleep, though, because it's very uncomfortable.
You don't sleep with this stuff.
No, it takes too much time.
And, you know, people wear less on the beach.
Well, that's true.
But it certainly is a dramatic look.
It makes a statement.
Yeah.
Well, good luck to you, Apollonia.
It was a pleasure meeting you.
And thank you so much for being here.
Thank you.
Thank you.
It was a pleasure.
All right.
Let me...
