Our next guest won two MTV Movie Awards for her performance in The Crush.
Do you know what that is?
It's a movie.
A movie?
Sure.
Yeah.
I saw that.
And I believe she's also got a Special Academy Award for that Aerosmith video,
I think.
I don't know.
Her latest film is called Clueless, and it opens on Friday.
Ladies and gentlemen, here she is, Alicia Silverstone.
How are you?
Good.
Welcome to the show.
Thank you.
This is Pam Cox.
She's from Oklahoma.
Yes, you're right.
You ever been to Oklahoma?
No.
Oh, it's a beautiful state.
You ought to go down there.
Yeah.
Ever been to Texas?
No.
Never been to Texas?
Yes, I got this one.
You're born, originally you're from San Francisco, is that correct?
Yes.
Tell people a little bit about yourself.
How did you get into show business?
You're very young.
How old are you?
18 or so?
Oh, man.
You've had a pretty nice career so far, don't you think?
Yes.
Yeah.
Well, how did this begin?
I was, when I was like three and four, I would dance to Olivia Newton-John on
my coffee
table.
Me too.
You did.
Yeah.
And the next thing you know, CBS gave me a show.
I used to think that my mom was Olivia Newton-John.
Now, wait a minute.
This is interesting.
This sounds like some deep-seated psychological disorder.
Yes.
You thought your mother was Olivia Newton-John.
Yeah.
But she's not, is she?
No.
No.
But she was a stewardess, so she was always away flying.
And I think when she left, she was going to do a concert.
Yeah.
And I also thought that they were aliens and they were all going to kill me one
day.
Really?
So it was an unpleasant childhood then?
Just very creative mind, I guess.
So from dancing around the house on the coffee table and believing that your
parents are aliens
and Olivia Newton-John could be one and the same, I guess.
Then how did you go from that?
I mean, because kids do that.
That's what kids do.
You know, they just goof around and stuff.
How did you go from that to being like in big time show business?
I just came out to L.A. and started auditioning and doing that.
What was your first audition?
Oh, I did, well, not, the first one was Domino's Pizza.
Domino's Pizza.
Domino's Pizza commercial, yes.
Yeah.
And I did a Wonder Years where I met Fred Savage.
Oh, yeah.
Now, that was a pretty good show, wasn't it?
Yeah, I love that show.
And I was so, I turned bright red when I met him and I was dying for Fred
Savage.
And actually, he got my phone number and there was this big accident because I
had a fax machine
on my phone.
And for my father and he never got my number.
So, I mean, he had my number and he called, but he never thought, he never got
me.
Wow, another mix-up.
Yes, mix-up.
And now tell us about Clueless.
You play the part of a young girl who attends Beverly Hills High.
Yes.
And I understand you also went there yourself.
Yes, I went there.
I was a total loser there.
No, nothing like Cher.
Really?
I just walked in.
What was it like?
What is Beverly Hills High like?
It's nutty.
Everyone dresses very fashionable to go to school and they're very...
You know, like that.
Oh, they're like that.
Yeah.
And I was just a little wearing sweats and it was not appropriate.
So, did you graduate?
Do you have a high school diploma?
I took my GED.
I got emancipated and so I'm done with school.
You're done with it.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
Now, you...
All right.
So, anyway, the movie Clueless should play the part of Cher named for the actor
slash singer.
Cher?
Yes.
My best friend in the film, Dion, we were both named after singers from the
past who now do infomercials.
So, and we both totally understand each other because everyone's jealous of us.
So, we understand how it feels to have, you know, that pressure in school.
I have no idea what you're talking about.
It was hard for me to, like...
And then the videos, they gave you quite a bit of recognition, didn't they?
The Aerosmith videos?
Yeah.
And how did those come to be?
Marty Kallner and John Kladner saw The Crush and wanted me to do their videos.
And there you go.
Will you do other videos, do you think?
Maybe.
Yeah.
Do you like being in those kind of videos?
They're so much fun.
It's just getting paid to run around and punch people, punch Steven Dorff.
It's great.
That kind of stuff.
Yeah.
And let me see your fingers.
This is a very unusual shade of...
Well, perhaps it's not unusual.
Look at that.
How would you describe that?
Sky blue.
My toes, too.
Well, it looks like it could be a circulatory problem.
We'll see.
It's sky and earth.
All right.
So I'm drowning.
Pam, do you have any questions?
Do you get to meet the band?
Yes, I met them once.
Really?
Just once?
Yeah.
You know, she got to meet your husband, as well.
Yeah, I know it is.
Are you married?
Are you married?
Do you have a family?
Married, five kids.
Really?
Yeah.
No.
Do you have a boyfriend?
I have a dog.
Who's my boyfriend, Samson.
But you must...
Guys must just be all around sleeping in the yard at your place, huh?
No.
I don't know what it is.
Everybody thinks that.
But I don't have dates.
Don't have guys.
Loser.
So...
So you must be very excited about things now, huh?
Yes.
The movie is doing well.
Has it opened yet?
It opens Wednesday.
Everyone's very excited about it.
It's a very fun movie.
Yeah.
It's great.
Amy Heckerling, directed, of course, I think, best known perhaps for Fast Times
at Ridgemont High,
which is also a very entertaining film.
Yes.
She wrote that and directed that.
Yeah.
And what are you going to do for the rest of the summer?
Hang out with Samson and...
Samson is your dog.
What kind of dog do you have?
He's a Rottweiler, Pitbull, Doberman.
I'm sorry to hear that.
Sounds like an affectionate little thing, doesn't it?
Well, Alicia, it was very nice to meet you.
And good luck with your career.
And I'm very happy you could come by here this evening.
Thank you very much.
All right.
Did you have a nice time?
Yes.
All right.
Good.
It's Alicia Silverstone, ladies and gentlemen.
We'll be back with Cindy Lauper.
