now listen to this this is going to be special very special our next guest a
seven-time
grammy award-winning singer songwriter and guitar player tomorrow he will be
inducting
the late stevie ray vaughn into the rock and roll hall of fame but yep now
listen
he's doing us a huge favor here tonight we asked him would you be interested in
performing
this song and he said well i got to get in some road work i got to get in shape
yeah it's kind
of a beast but i'll give it a shot so he's going to do it for us tonight ladies
and gentlemen
performing along with paul and the kids in the band american pie here's john
mayer
a long long time ago i can still remember how that music used to make me smile
and i knew if i had my chance that i could make those people dance and maybe
they'd be happy for a while
february made me shiver with every paper i delivered bad news on the doorstep i
couldn't take one more
step and i can't remember if i cried when i read about his widow bride
something touched me deep inside
the day the day the music died
so bye bye miss american pie drove my savvy to the levee but the levee was dry
and the good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye singing this will be the
day that i die
this will be the day
did you write the book of love do you have faith in god
if the bible tells you so
do you believe do you believe in a rock and roll can music save your mother
soul then can you teach me how to dance real slow
well i know you're in love with him cause i saw you dancing in the gym you both
kicked off the shoes
and then i dig those fell on the boots i was a lonely teenage
bouncing book with a pink condition and a pickup truck but i knew i was out of
luck
and i was a lonely in the day the music died and we were singing bye bye miss
american pie drove my savvy to the levee but the levee was dry and the good old
boys were drinking whiskey and rye singing this will be the day that i died
this will be the day that i died this will be the day that i died
and for ten years we've been on a morning moss grows fat on a rolling stone but
that's not how it used to be
when the justice sang for the king and queen in the court he borrowed from james
dean and a voice that came from
you and me
oh and while the king was looking down
oh and while the king was looking down
the justice stole his thawney crown
no courtroom was adjourned
and no verdict was returned
oh and while lennon read a book on marks
the court said the court said the court said practiced in the park and we sang
the chess in the dark the day the music died
and we were singing
and we were singing
and we were singing
and we were singing bye bye miss american pie
and we were singing bye bye miss american pie
drove my savvy to the levee but the levee was dry
and we were singing bye bye miss american pie
drove my savvy to the levee but the levee was dry
them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
saying this will be the day that i die
this will be the day that i die
this will be the day that i die
the birds flew off from where the fallout shouted
eight miles high and falling fast
not devout on the forward pass
jester on the forward pass
jester on the sidelines
in a cast
now the halftime air was sweet perfume
while the sergeants played a march and tune
we all got up to tears
oh but we never got a chance
cause the players tried to take the field
and march and bear refused to yield
do you recall what was the deal the day
the music died
we started singing bye bye miss american pie
drove my savvy to the levee but the levee was dry
them good old boys would drink a whiskey
right singing this will be the day that i die
this will be the day that i die
oh and there we were all in one place
saying a generation lost in space
with no time left to start again
jackie nimble jack be quick jack flash set on a candlestick
the fire is the devil's only friend
oh as i watched him moan on the stage my hands were clenched in fists of rage
no angel born in him could ever break that devil's spell
and as the flames climb high into the night to light the sacrifice showed right
i saw satan laughing with the day
and he was singing
and he was singing bye bye
it's the very good night
drove my savvy to the levee but the levee was dry
and the good old boys were drinking whiskey and dry
singing this will be the day that i die
this should be the day that i die
i met a girl who sang the blues
asked her false unhappy news
but she just smiled and turned away
went down to the sacred store
where i'd heard the music years before
but the man there said the music wouldn't play
and in the streets the children screamed
the lovers cried and the poets dreamed
but not a word was spoken
the church bells are broken
and the three men i admire the most
father son and holy ghost
well they caught the last train for the coast
the day
the music died
and they were singing bye bye miss american pie
drove my savvy to the levee but the levee was dry
and them good old boys were drinking whiskey and ride
singing this will be the day that i die
this will be the day that i die
this will be the day that i die
this will be the day that i die
singing this will be the day that i die
oh no
