My first guest is a great singer and one of the stars of the hit movie, "Fame."
Please welcome Irene Cara.
Sometimes I wonder
Where I've been
Who I am
Do I fit in
Make believing
Is hard alone
Out here
On my own
We're always proving
Who we are
Always reaching
For that rising star
To guide me far
And shine me home
Out here
On my own
When I'm down
And feelin' blue
I close my eyes
So I can be with you
Oh, baby, be strong for me
Baby, be loved to me
Help me through
Help me through
Help me
Help me
Need you
Until the morning
Sun appears
Making light
Of all my fears
Of all my fears
Of all my fears
I dry the tears
I've never shown
Out here
On my own
On my own
On my own
But when I'm down
And feelin' blue
Feelin' blue
And feelin' blue
I close my eyes
So I can be
With you
Oh, baby, be strong for me
Baby, be loved to me
Help me through
Help me need you
Sometimes I wonder
Sometimes I wonder
Where I've been
Who I am
Do I fit in?
I may not quit
But I can't be thrown
Out here
On my own
Out here
On my own
On my own
Bravo, dear
Bravo, dear
Real nice
And you know Frank
Frank is always
Talking about you
How do you know Frank?
Frank is the piano player
For Out here on my own
In the movie
And in the soundtrack
And you guys
You're on the album, Frank?
Yes, I am
Oh, terrific
Yeah, Frank is always
I guess you know
Going off to different places
To accompany you
You would know that, wouldn't you?
You've been performing since you were just a tiny person
A young kid
But you're not very old now, are you?
I'll be 22 in March
Just a baby
So when did you start performing?
Professionally at eight
Eight years old?
But I actually start at six
What...
What can a six-year-old do in the way of entertaining?
I was singing and dancing
Really?
On stage, yeah
For benefits and beauty contests and concerts
What was your first professional job?
It was a play on Broadway called Maggie Flynn
With Jack Cassidy and Shirley Jones
And I got to meet David Cassidy
He was 18 at the time
And Sean was my age, he was eight
Did you feel like you missed anything as a kid, you know?
Because you were...
I guess you got to devote a lot of your time to show business
I'm originally from the South Bronx
And I don't think I missed anything
I'm not sure what that means, but...
As the people in the Midwest, no
People said about the movie Fame that there was just a bunch of newcomers
And I guess that's certainly not true for yourself
Well, it was mostly newcomers
Although Barry Miller, who played Ralph Garcy
Was in Saturday Night Fever, had a lead role
And they like to make it seem like, you know, they're breaking into new kids
But most of the kids were newcomers
Had already been around and working
Has this movie changed your life any?
I've been doing this 16 years
It's pretty much been the same
My life has been my career and my friends and my work
But it's just, it's been a successful thing for me
But you're a big deal now, I mean, whereas before you were always working and
always successful
Well, I think when I did Roots, Roots the Next Generation
I played Alex Haley's mom
That was like another stepping stone for me, you know, to do a lead like that
You played Alex Haley's mom as a... before she had Alex
No, I played the whole role
His mother, uh, had passed away at 36
So I played the role from 14 to 36
No kidding?
Yeah
How would you possibly...
I died on screen and everything was crazy
Oh, okay
Sorry to hear about that, goodness
Listen, you're gonna sing another song, is that right?
This one, we didn't rehearse, so we're gonna wing it, folks
Okay, I think we got a commercial before we...
Oh
Something else we didn't rehearse
Anyway, we'll give you two minutes to work this out
And we'll be right back with Irene Cara
Thank you very much
Welcome back to the show, ladies and gentlemen
And now, just like we rehearsed, here's Irene Cara
Thank you.
Shady Sadie, Shady Sadie, serving lady, she's a serving lady. Don't pay her no
mind, no, she'll take every dime. She's got a one-day lunch, the five of a
bunch, yeah, hot lunch, yeah.
Macaroni and bologna, tuna fish, our favorite dish, hot lunch, yeah.
If it's yellow, then it's jello. If it's blue, it could be blue. She's got a
one-day lunch, the five of a bunch, yeah.
Hot, hot, hot lunch, well, lunch. Hot lunch, hot lunch, oh, hot lunch, yeah.
Hot lunch, oh, she's got a one-day lunch, the five of a bunch.
Hot, hot, hot lunch, hot lunch, hot lunch, hot lunch, hot lunch, don't you know,
oh, she's got a one-day lunch, good for all of a bunch, yeah.
Hot, hot, hot lunch, hot lunch, hot lunch, hot lunch.
Well, lunch, oh, she's got a one-day lunch, hot lunch.
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh.
She's just terrific.
