our next guest is a talented actress she's starring in a brand new hbo series
entitled
girls you can see it beginning april 15th at 10 30 p.m ladies and gentlemen
here's the lovely
allison williams welcome to the show thank you so much for having me i'm
thrilled to have you
here and i want to mention to people if it's all right with you how we sort of
know one another
through uh a common personality that's and a true personality your father is brian
williams
that is the most trusted man in america now i guess at nbc news and uh when he
comes to the program
he's always very lively and very entertaining and seems like he'd be great at a
party what was it
like as a dad it's all a facade yeah it's a giant no i'm kidding he's um he is
a wonderful dad it's
actually been very cool to have him as a dad a newsman is a very cool job i
think um and there
were definitely scary times occasionally he would go away for a long time but
there were perks as
well i i remember um i had a crush on a boy in fourth grade and i was having
trouble just stealing
the deal you know it's that last it's that last inning that's so tough um and
for some reason let
me interrupt you right there yeah yeah yeah you're talking about fourth grade i'm
talking about fourth
great and when you say seal the deal yeah uh to be precise i just meant for him
to ask me out on aol
instant messenger okay and at that point yeah yeah
i just like to think of your dad at home dropping off the couch
yeah yeah i was precocious all right so now you're having trouble sealing the
deal yeah i'm having
trouble and i just thought what can i possibly bring to the table to impress
this guy and i brought him
a uh a stolen napkin off air force one so yeah that's pretty good it was pretty
good yeah it's
probably like 30 cents but air force one air force that gets everybody's
attention yeah and what happened
to the kid in fourth grade is he still around or is he in a federal prison he's
still around uh no he's
not um he's still around he's yeah he's a he's a kid did you uh uh get to he's
still a kid he's still
in fourth grade well see it really set him back you're better you're better off
that you've moved
on with your thank you thank you the kid is still in fourth yeah now did you uh
did your dad ever
include you and the rest of your family and like did you go to the white house
did you meet the
president did you do stuff like that yeah i i did when i was little when i was
10 years old we went
to a holiday event in washington dc and we were going to meet the president and
at that time it was
president clinton and i was so nervous about being able to address him
correctly because it's very
confusing it's mr president and mrs clinton i just wanted to call them all
president i wanted to say
like mr and mrs president family i don't know why that shouldn't yeah i don't
either but so i was very
focused on it so to distract me my parents said why don't you think of a name
for their new puppy
because they were about to get a puppy and so i thought and when i met him i
said hello mr
president hello mrs clinton i think you should name your dog either chocolate
or top secret good
good names you approve of that i do yes okay good well he thought it was very
funny which wasn't my
intention but you know take what you can get and the next day he talked about
it i guess with the press
and someone on the today show heard it and they called my dad and said would
your daughter mind calling
into the show to talk about her suggestion i don't know i guess he thought it
was funny and so before
going into school to miss doz koch's class that's important for some reason um
i i called in and
while i was telling the story i referred to the first lady as hillary
so i got a little flack about it oh really yes i did i kind of got made fun of
on the air oh no
that's not right it hurt my feelings you're like a 10 year old kid when this
happened it was 10 years
oh no that's not right they and they said they said where do you get off
calling the first lady right
they said here you are a two thousand dollar chandelier calling the first lady
yeah and was it am i right about this is your father a volunteer fireman
uh i i understand you thinking that he would be because from talking to him i
he wants people to think yes he badly does yeah um the truth is the truth is
that he was a volunteer
fireman in high school and college and in the glory days i suppose and then now
he has a a fire scanner
in our kitchen right and uh it is it is very loud and it beeps anytime
something fire related happens
so like a fire alarm goes off it beeps it's like it's very loud just like that
and um so we'll be
sitting there i'll be talking to him about some very important thing in my life
and all of a sudden
the alarm will go off and i'll turn around for making a point and he's like he's
like right out
into the car to the fire really where he's not allowed to do anything
so he yeah
one of two things he's found a mechanism by which he can get out of the house
anytime he wants
very smart or even stranger he just he goes to watch a fire yeah see that needs
examination
yes that is a cry for help for god's sakes yeah it's very weird if there's
nothing morbid about
it i think he just misses it so he's sort of like a dalmatian almost except i
think they actually help
yes the only difference between him and a dalmatian is
the dogs actually yeah they have a job wow yeah have fun at the house
yeah well uh you're fine and i love your father uh by the way and he must be
and your whole family must be very proud what now what did you do right up
until the time you're
starring on this television show well i i wanted to do this since i was really
really little which is
part of why it's so exciting and um but i wasn't allowed to start acting until
i graduated from college
so i did a lot of things on sets so i could learn about it so i've been a stand-in
i've been a pa
and one summer my first summer in college i had a very cool job i was the
assistant to the assistant
to tina fey wow that's that's a pretty good gig i had a lot of power at 30 rock
yeah um
and anyway so i spent a summer in new york running around doing various things
in the city that her
assistant would want to do and one of those jobs was i got a call from him and
he said listen i need
you to go to tom brokaw's house and get a dress tremendous guy yes very a
tremendous man and get
a dress for tina fey tom brokaw's house and get a dress yeah yeah i don't yeah
i don't that's a show
that's what i thought that's completely what i thought but i didn't want to i
didn't want to give
myself up i didn't want him to know that i wasn't like in the know enough to
know what was going on
so i said yeah absolutely i'm on it i got the address i'm in the cab on the way
there and i was
just thinking what am i going to what am i going to say this is the weirdest
what is happening and uh i'm
i'm thinking okay i'm going to introduce myself and i walk up to the apartment
a lovely apartment i believe
it was in chelsea and i knock on the door and a man comes to the door and it is
not tom brokaw it
is a man named tom broker with an r who uh is the costume designer for 30 rock
and he had some
not tom brokaw at all yeah well there you go
uh girls is the program quite a lot of discussion about this show
uh i've seen it and you're tremendous congratulations well congratulations on
that
it premieres april 15th at 10 30 on hbo and before you go could you do a little
regis for us
dave it's the strangest thing
allison williams ladies and gentlemen oh that was lovely
