our next guest are two hugely talented and influential songwriters who have
collaborated
on the grammy-nominated song you're about to hear it's featured on the
soundtrack to the
motion picture grace of my heart ladies and gentlemen this is going to be
something elvis
costello and burt baccharat now i have nothing so god give me strength
cause i'm weak in a way and if i'm strong i might still break and i don't have
anything to share
that i won't throw away into the air
that song is sung out this bell is rung out she was the light that i blessed
she took my last chance of happiness so god give
my strength and strength
my heart should grant me her indulgence and decline i might as well wipe her
from my memory
and maybe i was washed out like a lip print on his shirt
and i want him
and i want him
i want him
i want him
i want him
i want him
i want him
i want him
i want him
Since I lost the power to pretend that there could ever be a happy ending, that
song is sung.
This bell is ringing. She was the light that I blessed. She took my last chance
of happiness.
So God give me strength.
God give me strength.
Pleasure to meet you. You got something here, don't you?
Kurt Bacharach.
Elvis Costello.
Well, that's really something, isn't it?
Thank you.
What do you think, folks?
Everybody, come on!
Our next guests are two immensely talented and influential figures in popular
music.
They have collaborated on this wonderful new CD.
It's entitled Painted From Memory, which is due in stores tomorrow.
Please welcome back to the program our old buddy Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach.
Kids.
Thank you.
I have to say that we should finish it now.
Before we weaken 'cause we already know this is wrong.
I could give in.
Sometimes I think that I will.
Despite the temptation, I try to be very strong.
I try to be very strong.
In my reluctance, I try to be very strong.
In my reluctance.
I try to be very strong.
In my reluctance.
I try to be very strong.
In my reluctance.
I try to be very strong.
In my reluctance.
I try to be very strong.
I try to be very strong.
In my reluctance.
I try to be very strong.
I try to be very strong.
I try to be very strong.
Sometimes I think that I will
Despite the temptation I try to be very strong
If my reluctance seems a surprise
It's not that I don't want you
But I just know I must hesitate
Because I still have that other girl in my head
I still have that other girl in my head
There may be ugly rumors that I have been lying
There may be angry tears
But they're never worth the crying
That is why sometimes I hesitate
Because I still have that other girl in my head
I still have that other girl in my head
I still have that other girl in my head
I still have that other girl in my head
I still have that other girl in my head
I still have that other girl in my head
I still have that other girl in my head
I still have that other girl in my head
I still have that other girl in my head
I still have that other girl in my head
I still have that other girl in my head
I still have that other girl in my head
I still have that girl in my head
I still have that girl in my head
I still have that girl in my head
I still have that girl in my head
I still have that girl in my head
I still have that girl in my head
I still have that girl in my head
I still have that girl in my head
I still have that girl in my head
Elvis Costello, Burt Baccarat
Nice, uh, good to have you guys here
That's, that string section
Now how many people, how many pieces
in that string section?
Two violins, uh, two violas, two cellos
And they're all women?
Now, now, is that...
Beautiful women
Oh, absolutely
Is that by design or is that unusual
to have, uh, all string, all female?
Well, we thought it was the Dave Love vibe
I thought that was part of the rules
You thought it was the Dave Love vibe?
Uh-oh, it must be the Burt and Elvis love vibe
Oh, man, well, anyway, whatever it is
It's a very impressive thing
You know, sight and sound
It couldn't be a greater combination
And you guys are a pretty good combination as well
And how, how long have you been working together
Collaborating together
And how, how did that begin?
Well, we sort of started on your show
We did the first song that we had written
Um, God Give Me Strength
And, uh, you know, we had made this record
And, uh, that was about two years ago
And we started to write songs after that
And, um, because it felt so good
Yeah, it seems to be producing great results, obviously
With the, the CD
And you guys are still speaking
So that's good, right?
Everything's going...
Well, we're going on the road
You know, that's a big, that's the big test
That's the deal breaker
It'll be at Radio City on the 13th
And then we're going to Washington
And when you guys travel
Will it be more than just the string section?
Will it be like a huge orchestra?
A big deal?
Well, we have a core band
Very much like this band that you have
Like Paul's band
And, uh, string section
It'll be very exciting
Practically this whole string section
Yeah?
You want to come?
I'd love to come
Yeah, you have to come, yeah?
Come to Radio City
Come to Radio City Day
It's Elvis Costello, Burt Bacharach
And it's in stores tomorrow
Tomorrow
So, so this is it
You know, chances are
If you're up watching this show
You're not going to make it to work anyway
So
Just forget about it
Go buy the store
And pick up a copy of this
And I think you'll be glad you did
As they say on radio and TV
Elvis, good to see you
Thank you very much
Beautiful as always
That's it, ladies and gentlemen
My thanks to everybody
Who was on the program tonight
Chris Kattan
Fran Drescher
Elvis and Burt
We'll see you tomorrow
Tom Snyder is next
Thanks for watching
Good night, everybody
