Paul, you know, I was talking with some members of the staff earlier today,
and we were theorizing about show business generally.
You're a showbiz veteran, aren't you?
I am, and I'm a devotee as well.
A devotee, and a happening dude, in your own right.
Well, thank you.
A happening dude.
I agree.
Thank you so much.
And we were conjecturing as to what really is the backbone of show business.
I have a theory.
What do you think the backbone of show business is?
The Communist Party?
Wild guest, I don't know.
No, you know, oddly enough, that didn't come up.
Really?
Wild guest.
But an excellent guest.
Well, what is it?
And I'm sorry we don't include you at our little round tables.
Well, you know.
What is the backbone?
I think, Paul, and maybe you can back me up on this, I think it's fans.
Fans, of course.
And fan clubs.
And fan clubs.
Fans and fan clubs, yeah.
How you doing?
Yeah, you're right.
Uh-oh.
New character?
No, it's not just me doing something stupid.
Oh.
I wish it was a new character.
It's just me doing something idiotic.
That's it.
And so we decided what we do is talk to some fan club presidents.
You know, anybody who's in show business has a fan club, and they have the
president who's
in charge of running the operation.
So that's exactly what we did.
We spent some time chatting with fan club presidents.
Roll the videotape.
All that I'm feeling.
All that I'm feeling.
And you're the president of what fan club?
Um, it's called the Galactic Empire.
It's a Star Wars fan club, but it's aimed only at what you guys would call the
bad guys,
the empire.
Now, what does it say about you that you're on the, you're on the dark side?
The force is not with you.
Is the force with you?
No, the force is not with me.
You see?
Look at that.
R2D2.
Huh?
Pretty good, isn't it?
You're the president of the G.I. Joe fan club.
I'd say commander-in-chief.
Commander-in-chief of the fan club.
And the focus of the fan club is this doll, G.I. Joe.
We don't refer to him as a doll.
What do you call him?
He's a male action figure.
A male action figure.
How many performances have they done?
Uh, they're, they're probably past somewhere between, uh, 5,500 and 6,000 right
now.
And how many have you seen?
I have seen 508 of them.
Everybody in the theater knows about me.
The cast members, the ushering staff, the people who sell the tickets.
Uh, how many times have you heard somebody utter this phrase?
Keep an eye on him.
Have you ever heard that?
No.
No, that's good.
Could you, on your stomach, crawl down the hallway like G.I. Joe?
Sure.
Let me ask you some questions here.
True or false, uh, I've touched Kenny Rogers' beard.
Oh, that's false.
It's not.
I'm sorry.
Take a look.
You got to know where to hold it.
Fluffy.
Uh, some cast members do acknowledge my presence, uh, during the performance.
Oh, there's, there's Hector.
Hey, Hector.
How are you?
Yeah, little, little, little, little, little high-sized, little paw swipes in
my way.
One cast member would actually swat me with her tail.
Really?
Really?
We got a surprise here for you.
There you go.
Hello, Kenny.
Hey.
How you doing?
I'm fine, thank you.
Yourself?
It's me, Dave.
I'm here with Ruth Marler, the president of the fan club.
Really?
Would you mind singing a little something for us?
Lady, I'm your knight in shining armor, and I love you.
You, David, I'm sorry.
Can you hold on?
All right.
Okay, I'm back.
All right.
In my eyes, I see no one else but you.
Freeze, you bastard.
And here's Luke Skywalker.
Luke Skywalker is played by Mark Hamill.
Mark Hamill.
He's got another show.
He's got a TV show on.
It's very odd.
He's showing people out of Parallel Park.
Have you seen that?
Cut it, cut it, cut it, cut it, cut it!
And in, and in, and you are out!
You, you like Star Wars.
You, of course, like cats.
We have a treat that I think both of you will enjoy.
Oh, yeah?
Yeah.
Have you ever met him, Kevin?
Yes.
It was amazing because I always thought his hairpiece was defying gravity.
I should talk.
Look at my hairpiece, for God's sake.
Is that a hairpiece?
Yeah.
That is what we are.
No one in between.
How can we be wrong?
Send him in.
I think you get a kick out of this.
President of the Dave Letterman Fan Club.
Hi, Leonard.
How are you?
Oh, my God.
David Letterman.
I can't believe it.
I'm going to crap.
And you are the president of the Tony Randall Fan Club.
Yes, I am, Dave.
Have you ever met Tony Randall?
Yes, I have.
What kind of guy is he?
A very fine man.
Thank you very much for coming.
It was a pleasure meeting you.
Happy New Year.
Thank you.
Travel safely back to Nashville.
Thanks.
Bye-bye.
Bye-bye.
You get to know when to go.
Know when to go.
