Well, I don't know. I'm at kind of a turning point here at the show. Already we've
reached a sort of a crossroads.
Do, see, it was brought up earlier today, somebody pointed out on my staff that
across the hall at Live at Five is former President Jimmy Carter.
And that's interesting, a smattering of applause and a couple of boos over
there.
So now, while there's no way in hell the man would come here and be on the show,
like many of your right-thinking Americans, so they said, well, maybe we can go
over and say hello to him.
Now, I don't even know if this is something we want to do.
Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute.
Did you all vote for the man?
And how about you, Steve? I noticed that our drummer was especially eager for
me to go over and say hello to former President Carter.
No, but what do I do when I get over there is the problem. What should I do?
Say hello, then what?
Have the new book?
Okay, these are all great suggestions. Thank you very much.
That concludes the audience participation in pork and ba-da-bomb.
Well, all right, I guess we have to now.
Yeah.
Stop it. Stop it. Let's just sneak over there. If nothing happens, no big deal,
right?
It really won't count against your entertainment time.
We'll just casually go over there. I don't like doing this because this man was
formerly the president of the most powerful country in the world.
Thank you very much, sir.
So, Paul, maybe a little music to cover this awkward walk.
All right.
How do you do? Nice to see you.
Maybe if I took somebody with me, is there anybody I can take with me?
Where is Al?
Al, come here.
Okay, here. Come here.
This is our own Al Frisch. Now, Al, come here. Wait a minute. Wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
Have you ever met the president?
No.
Okay, here's how we'll do it.
I'll say one of our technicians has long been a supporter of years, President
Carter,
and was really interested in saying hello. Is that all right with you?
Okay.
All right. So, you'll kind of help me out with this.
Okay.
Well, you'd think they'd have Secret Service out here, wouldn't you?
How do we know the Secret Service guys are here?
Yeah, it'd be tough to spot the Secret Service guys here, wouldn't it?
I guess you're with the Secret Service, aren't you?
Yes.
All right. $3 million a year for Secret Service.
No, I don't need that. I have Al Frisch.
Our own Bob Rooney, ladies and gentlemen, just back from vacation.
Now, come on. Come on.
Excuse me. Do you know where, are you with the president's party, Mr. Carter?
Yes.
Are you with the Secret Service?
Yes.
What is your name, sir?
Bill Bush.
Bill, I'd like you to meet Al Frisch.
Al was telling me earlier he's long been a fan of the Secret Service.
And where would President Carter be?
Right behind you.
In your room.
In my room?
Well, who's keeping an eye on my belongings?
He is.
You don't mean he's not in my dressing room, but right here.
All right.
All right.
Well, thank you.
It's okay to go in?
Yes.
You don't want to frisk me?
No.
Oh, go ahead.
Frisk me.
Come on.
Go ahead.
You can.
You can.
All right.
Maybe later?
Okay.
All right.
Let me just.
Come in.
Come in.
Come in.
Oh, excuse me.
President Carter, how are you?
Nice to see you.
You look familiar.
Well, yes.
So do you.
Now, first of all, welcome to New York.
What brings you to town?
Thank you.
Well, I just wanted to meet the guy that keeps my daughter awake so late at
night.
Now, did you know that Amy was on our show about three years ago?
You're the one that encourages her to wear black dresses.
I know.
Well, she looked very nice in the black dress.
I thought it was a great choice.
Well, thank you, Dave.
It's good to be with you.
Nice to see you, sir.
Now, the reason we came over, Mr. President, this is Al Frisch.
He's one of our studio technicians.
Good to see you.
And Al has long been a fan of yours and wanted a chance to come over and say
hello.
Al, I'm glad to meet you.
Glad to meet you.
Thank you very much.
Al, is there anything you'd like to tell the president?
I just thought it's a pleasure meeting him.
Well, thank you.
And I wish we started in office.
That's very nice of you to say that, Al.
You know, if I had been reelected and served four more years, I would also be
out of office now.
That's right.
So the same thing would hold true.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Life okay for you?
It's fine.
I was just reading a very remarkable book that's just been written about the
Middle East.
It's called The Blood of Abraham, written by a former president.
Oh, I see.
What a coincidence.
You didn't happen to have a copy.
You didn't have a book here.
I kind of like it.
It's unbelievable.
Well, I'll be darned.
We have a copy right here.
Well, I can have it.
Well, that's very thoughtful.
Do you mind signing that?
I'll be good.
Okay, you sign that.
And do you have a copy for Al?
I can give Al this one if you want.
Well, then I kind of like, no, no.
Better give that one to me.
Okay.
By the way, this man, this Bill Bush, do you know him?
I've seen him before.
He let me come right on in.
That's very nice.
Homeless.
Thank you very much for your time.
Nice meeting you, sir.
Well, thank you.
This will really make my day with Amy.
Well, tell Amy I said hello.
Being president is not much.
Being on the David Letterman show is a lot.
Geez, I'm not sure about that either.
Thank you very much.
Good luck.
Thank you.
Say goodbye, Al.
Thank you.
Okay.
Good luck.
Okay.
Thank you.
Goodbye, Al.
All right.
We'll take care of it.
Thank you.
After the show.
The whole thing, okay?
All right.
Great.
Okay.
Come on, Al.
Come on, come on, come on.
Are we done here?
What do you think, Al?
Al Trish, ladies and gentlemen.
Mr. Al Trish.
We'll see you next time.
We'll see you next time.
We'll see you next time.
We'll see you next time.
We'll see you next time.
Bye.
