at uh at the age of 20 our next guest is the youngest player in baseball and
already being
compared to millie millie mays he's so good they're comparing him to millie mays
willie's
sister quite a player in her own right millie that's right what was your smart
millie mays
softball very good yeah what an arm quite a cannon yes
uh in addition he is uh one half of the first father and son team to ever play
at the same time
ladies and gentlemen here's ken griffey jr ken
nice to see you you uh you you you have a charmed life this is like an american
dream you're you're
1920 you've played two years big league ball two years and your your what are
your statistics tell
me your average right now yep i think 306 306 not too bad rbi 60 64. knocking
about 64 runs and hits
how many do you have 162 162 oh man this is pretty good and stolen bases uh 15
15. have have you
participated in any bench clearing brawls
i sort of stay out of them on the outskirts but this as as a kid and you really
are a kid by every
other definition this must just be like a wild fantasy for you huh yeah it's a
lot of fun um just
going out there and doing what i love to do yeah what what is it that you can't
get over about major
league baseball when you go to a park every day and something just kind of
clicks in the back of your
mind anything damn i'm i'm playing major league ball here is there anything
that happens like that
you get scared yeah what frightens you do you are you worried about pitchers
coming close to you
no i'm worried about making a mistake yeah what kind of mistake would would haunt
you
an error an error like a fielding error but you don't make many errors do you
uh not recently yeah
i try to stay away from those now was that you i remember in in the middle of
the season i think
before the all-star game and you're like the first seattle mariner to be on the
all-star game
to be voted in yeah and you started yeah a few other guys um there was some
catch you made you
leaped up onto the outfield wall and grabbed a ball stole a home run from
somebody uh jesse barfield
yeah yeah and that was a yankee stadium or yeah yeah that was unbelievable i
didn't see the ball
you never saw it no i ran back to the fence i said i got a chance to catch it
when i jumped
i just closed my eyes and it went in my glove so let me get this straight you
didn't see the ball
you knew it had been hit well you ran toward the fence and on a hunch
um what what was it like for you when when you're a kid and your dad is playing
for the cincinnati red
the big red machine in in the 70s what was that like oh no he's a father yeah
did you go to the
park with him every once in a while we try to stay away from it if we wanted to
go we could if we didn't
we could stay home and do other things yeah and at what point did you start be
start being serious
about baseball when you were a kid uh about a senior in high school yeah and
where was this in ohio
you lived there yeah yeah and and scouts were coming to your house when you
were like even
younger right they were coming to the field when i was about 14. 14 major
league baseball scouts and
would they come up to you and talk to you about stuff no they would sit with my
mother and talk to
her you know mom's like they always want to be at every game yeah and and and
what did your mom
think that these guys were coming to to talk about her 14 year old son well she
knew she had an idea
my dad had told her yeah i don't think it was being kept a secret from your mom
you know for me you know
honey he plays baseball was that an exciting time for you just you wanted to be
a kid i just wanted
to be a kid i just go out and play and have fun what what was your first uh
major league at bat like
um terrified yeah i went up to the plate and uh he could have threw the ball
anywhere dave steward could
have threw the ball behind me i would have swung yeah so you just said to
yourself i'm going to swing no
matter what when i go up there yeah swung and uh i fouled the first one off i
turned around and uh
i grabbed my stomach and breathed real heavy for a second i got back in there
he threw me a fork
ball hit it for a double wow and now this is in oakland yeah okay so now you
come you come into
the kingdom there what was your first at bat at home like my first at bat uh a
fastball away hit it for
a home run first pitch
and and so now how are the mariners doing they're about 500 ball this year
right um yeah we're 68 and
69 um are they paying you a lot of money no uh do you how long is your contract
with them are you
going to stay there for a while yeah um right now it's a year contract but uh
we're probably gonna
ask for a longer contract yeah i would think a longer contract and perhaps
maybe a little more lucrative
huh uh and so now the the uh your father left the reds uh and he's playing in
seattle what is that
like playing with your dad at first i didn't know what to expect um but after
the first day
we got out there and we started tossing he said i looked like i was 12 still
yeah yeah um
i started to shrink on him do you guys have the same philosophy as players do
you see things the
same way do you do you think identically on when it comes to baseball no he
thinks more singles and
doubles and i think more of a home run yeah yeah power some heat yeah um and
and if your dad does
your dad make errors in the field uh he doesn't make too many yeah would you
get on him if you
would would you heckle him a little bit i'd laugh yeah like always do you you'd
laugh at your father
oh all the time yeah yeah uh is it must be a great thrill for him also to be
able to play with his son
huh yeah it's a lot of fun for him uh we when we're on alpha we just sit out
there and laugh at each
other we ball wouldn't be out there and you just sit there and laugh he don't
do anything just uh what
what are you what are you gonna do in the off season what kind of things do you
do me uh i watch aerobics
you watch
uh so like nine months of that and you're ready to go to camp then huh yeah
yeah yeah okay uh yeah i know
hey it was fun meeting you and have uh geez have a great career and come back
anytime you're in town
wear it
wear it
you
