- All right, Brooke Shields, she is also a sophomore
at Princeton University this year.
She's the star of a television movie
which airs on another network, don't they all?
On October 28th, entitled "Wet Gold."
Please welcome Brooke Shields.
- Hi, Brooke.
How are you for here?
Thank you very much, good.
Have a seat.
- I just have one question, is it letter man or letter men?
- See, now you're making fun of me
because I didn't know, well, sometimes it's confusing
with the S, it's Brooke Shields, isn't it?
I'm sorry, it was just--
- And then Steve turns the TV off
just before I'm about to come on.
I'm really, and then on top of it, you know, I thought,
well, you know, I'd really make it the day
that I get to go to the 17th floor and never got to go.
- Yeah, I know, you're having a tough life, aren't you?
- Yeah, it's a tough life.
- Now, let's talk about school
for a minute.
Now, this is your second year, right?
- Yes.
- Now, has it been easier or more difficult this year?
- Socially, it's easier,
but academically it's more difficult.
- Now, how were your grades the first year?
- I got all A's and a B.
- All A's and a B.
- I got the B in philosophy, though.
- That's very impressive.
I didn't even take philosophy.
Now, you say socially it's a little easier.
Why is it easier socially this year?
- Well, I'm more acclimated.
I have more friends.
I don't feel so.
I know the people that,
and I've met people that I really like,
and now I can go back and I feel much more comfortable.
It was really difficult in the first year.
- Now, where did you live the first year
where you were there?
- I lived in a dorm.
- In a dorm on campus, right?
- Yes, with three other roommates.
- Three roommates.
And what was that like?
Were they just spellbound the whole time
that Brooke Shields was their roommate?
- I don't think they liked it too much.
I really don't.
No, they just, I think it was difficult for them.
People were always coming to my dorm,
and people were always knocking on the door.
- What kind of people?
- Well, people that were not students,
people that had sort of traveled.
- But nice folks.
- Sometimes they were nice,
other times they weren't that nice.
And it was difficult for my roommate.
- So it created a strain for you and the roommate?
- Yes.
- Yeah, so now this year, where do you live?
- I have a single on campus.
So it's easier because I'm not really a bother
to anybody else and I also have my own friends
that I like to go see.
- Yeah, and you say it's harder academically this year.
Now, why is it harder?
- Well, I think the courses get more difficult.
You're not taking introductory courses anymore.
You're starting to have to specialize in a department.
You're not a freshman anymore.
So you can't say, I don't know what I'm doing.
I'm a freshman.
I mean, now you're--
- Oh, I used that all four years.
- I know.
- At graduation, I was still saying,
I have no idea what the hell I'm doing here.
- But academically, it's a bit more challenging.
I mean, the courses are getting harder.
- Now, what are you studying?
What is your major?
- I'm taking, I'm French.
- French.
- So if you weren't in show business,
what would you do with your French degree?
- I don't really know if I'd be a French major
if I wasn't in show business.
- Really?
- I'd probably be something like a psychology major
or something.
- So why in show business do you want to be a French major?
- Because I get to travel,
and I work a great deal in Europe,
and I work with people that speak French and English,
and I think it's just, you know, it's helpful.
- Can I try a little French on you?
I don't know.
- I don't know.
- I don't know.
- I also have to say--
- Tell me.
- This is the only, the only French expression I know.
- Oh no.
- Je suis, is that close?
- Je suis le canard.
- I know.
- Gigantesque.
- I don't even know what gigantesque means.
- Gigantic.
- Gigantic, yeah.
- Well, gigantic.
- What a minute, you're studying French, I'm just--
- No, I know.
- Je suis, what does that mean?
- I am a big, like, duck or a bird.
- Yeah, that's right.
I'm a gigantic duck, that's all I know.
Boy, that's a beautiful ring.
- Thank you very much.
- It's a lovely ring.
- It's a lovely ring.
- Thank you very much.
- It's a lovely ring.
- I am a big, like, duck or a bird.
- Yeah, that's right.
- A big duck.
- That's just very nice.
- I'm a gigantic duck, that's all I know.
Boy, that's a beautiful ring.
- Thank you very much.
- It's a lovely ring.
- Brooke, we want to, you know, Steve Martin is here
and he's not feeling well, so he's upstairs taking it easy.
Let's go up and see how he's doing.
Steve, or, how are you?
- It's a five day out.
- It's shiny.
- Steve, how are you feeling?
Steve?
- Oh, it's fabulous, it's a comedy, haven't you seen it?
- Excuse me, Steve?
- Yeah, it's really fun to go down there after the--
- Steve.
- Hey, hi, how you doing?
- Good.
- You know, it's amazing how quickly
one of these things goes away.
I think it was like a 35 minute thing.
- So you're feeling a little better then, that's good.
- I feel okay, you know.
Hey, Dave.
- Yeah?
- Can I talk to Brooke for a second?
- Hi, hi.
- Hi, Brooke, how you doing?
You ought to come up, come on up.
- Oh, maybe we will, are you feeling better?
- Nah, I feel okay.
I'm not gonna give you anything or anything like that.
- Oh, well, I don't know, you know, I've heard--
- Come on up, it's a ball up here.
We're having a ball, aren't we?
It's a great, come on.
- All right, all right, come on.
- I'd love to, thank you.
- I can't really hear you, I'm having so much fun here.
- Okay, well, the place is filled up with deadbeats.
Yeah, it was awfully nice of him.
You know, the last time, oh, by the way,
you said you're missing a class, actually,
to be on the show, what class are you missing in?
- I'm missing an acting class,
and Alan and I'm Brian, I wanna thank you very much,
they let me out of my acting class.
- Are they pretty understanding about stuff like that?
- Well, I told them it was you and they, you know,
they really weren't gonna let me go.
- Yeah, I don't blame them.
- After I took a lot of convincing,
and I said I'd put in some extra hours later,
and they said okay.
- Now that must be pretty intimidating for those folks
and the other people in the class to have you as a student
in one of their acting sessions.
- I don't think so, I think it would almost work in reverse.
I think we're very much on the same level in that class,
and every time that I'm called
to do some sort of an improv or something,
I just get sick to my stomach as well as everybody else,
but I try.
It's very different when you're not in a situation
where you have all the support.
If when I'm making a film or if I'm doing something,
I really have the support of everybody that's there,
but when you're in an acting class,
everybody's sort of out for themselves.
- Tell me about your allowance.
The last time you were here,
you also said you were getting $10,
was it a day or a week?
- No, no, no, that was a week.
That was what, $10 a week?
Two years ago, yeah.
- I think it was two years ago.
Well, two years, 10, 12, 12 now.
I've got a raise.
- You're not getting $12 a week, are you?
- Actually, you know, it's funny.
Even though when I work and I make money,
the money is put into a trust,
so I don't get to have that.
- Yeah, now you'll get that money at what point?
- 21.
- 21, and so you're actually on a weekly allowance?
- Well, I am.
Basically, at school, I don't really need any money
because we live in the dorms
and we do the cafeteria.
We don't have time to do anything else.
- Yeah, but if you wanted to go out
and buy a brand new Buick Full Power and everything,
you could start peeling them off, wouldn't you?
- No.
- But you look terrific.
Thank you very much for being here.
- Well, thank you very much.
- And continued success on your education
as well as your career.
This is a very difficult thing for somebody to be doing,
and you're doing it quite well.
- Well, thank you.
- Nice to see you, Brooke.
Well, I tell you what, we have only a few seconds left.
Let's go once more up to my office
and see how Steve Martin is feeling.
You know, he was a little, a little ill earlier and...
- We're a little like that.
- There, Steve?
- Well, cheers.
- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- He's doing what's on mine.
- What's on mine?
- Oh, Steve.
- Well, I tell you, you know.
- I thought I was just...
- Well, apparently, Steve is feeling a little better.
I just wanted to say good night.
Have I got Steve?
- It's like...
- Well, we'll get to Steve in a minute.
Let me thank everybody who was here tonight.
Of course, Brooke Shields, obviously, there with Mr. Martin,
and Steve Martin himself,
everybody who helped out tonight with Stupid Pet Tricks.
Now, immediately following this particular program,
we will be on again,
and our guests will be Liberace and Bob Dylan,
and, of course, tomorrow we'll be on the Today Show as well.
Thank you very much, folks.
Have a good night.
We'll see you again.
- Thank you.
