On the road again
I just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is making music with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the road again
On the road again
Going places that I've never been
Seeing things that I may never see again
And I can't wait to get on the road again
On the road again
Like a band that Jim says we go down the highway
We'll be best friends
Insisting that the world keep turning our way
In our way
Is on the road again
I just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is making music with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the road again
And I can't wait to get on the road again
And I can't wait to get on the road again
And I can't wait to get on the road again
On the road again

We're the best friends
Insisting that the world keep turning our way
And our way, our way
Is on the road again
I just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is making music with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the road again

I can't wait to get on the road again
Boy, it's good to see you
Thank you
Thank you very much for being here
I really appreciate it
And you sound terrific
Thank you very much
Let me ask you about the guitar
This is the guitar
This is Trigger Jr.
Boy, look at this
What the heck happened here?
This would look like some
That's not a bullet hole
It was a hell of a wreck
What's the history behind this thing?
Well, this guitar is about 20 years old, I guess
And because the tone is exceptionally good
I've tried to keep it
And it doesn't have a pick guard
So over the years
The pick has worn a hole in there
And it looks kind of bad
But it sounds okay
And it doesn't affect the sound
You have essentially two openings there in the deal
Maybe you ought to putty one of these up
No, I think it kind of enhances the sound a little bit
We've had to reinforce it inside a little bit
To keep it from caving in
Yeah
And you folks have signed on there
Who are some of these people?
Oh, Roger Miller
Chris Christopherson
Leon Russell
A lot of friends of mine
Have you got this thing insured?
No
Do you ever let it out of your sight?
Are you careful with it?
Or you don't worry so much about it?
Or how do you treat it?
Well, I don't worry so much about it
Occasionally it crosses my mind
What would I do if something happened to it?
But I don't think about that
Yeah, but this is the one night in, night out
You're working with wherever you go?
That's it
Now, that wouldn't be traumatic
If all of a sudden it turned up missing
Yeah, I don't know where to go to look for it
No, no, I'm not
No, I don't know
You take it back
No, you hang on to it
But I mean, it gets to be a
But it's
I mean, it gets to be a real part of you, doesn't it?
Yeah
Yeah, it sure does
Listen, we have to do a commercial
We'll be right back and talk some more with Willie Nelson
And you're going to sing another song, aren't you?
Yes
Terrific
We'll be right back
Willie Nelson is here
You know, this afternoon when your people were here
You travel with a lot of folks, don't you?
Yes
When they were here setting up and so forth
Looking the place over
A lot of them had shirts on that said bad TV
Right
Now, what is that?
That had anything to do with us?
Or is this
No, this is our own little in-house production
That we have a camera
And we take pictures of ourselves
Throughout the day at the concert
Before and after and what have you
And we have some very interesting
Also, we had a contest recently
Called the Misconceived Contest
And we have some film clips of that
That maybe sometime in the future
You might like to show them
Oh, I'd love to show them
What would we see if we would be able
To get that stuff on the air?
Oh, well, just everyone in the group
Performed in their bathing suits
And they look courageous
Courageous
Yeah, well, you edit that stuff together
We'd throw it right on
That would be great
That would make them so happy
Oh, yeah, good
Now, when you come to New York City
You're going to be at Radio City Music Hall
For six nights?
Yes
And I understand it's already sold out
Do you run when you're in town?
Yes, do you?
I would if I was
But I'm not, so I don't
I get it
But where do you go?
I run in the park a lot
How much running do you do?
Well, I did about seven miles today
Yeah
Wow, that's amazing
Do you do that every day?
Well, not every day
You know, I skip a day sometimes
Yeah
The seven, what's the longest you've done?
I did ten miles one time
One day, Mark and I
Mark is my friend and manager
We did 21 miles
And Chris Christophson was with us that day
And we were trying to kill him
Now, you bring up a good point
He doesn't look like he, you know
He might, he looks like to kind of get rather sleep late
Chris?
Yeah
It's very deceiving though
He's a fine runner
No kidding
Yeah, he's in great condition
21 miles, that's admirable
Now, you're in town for six days
But do you still travel in a bus
Or have you progressed to bigger and better things?
Do you all roll in in a
Well, we have some buses that carry us
There are about 30 of us
So we've got four buses
And an airplane
What kind of airplane?
Oh boy
And I fly in that sometimes
I had a feeling you would be in that
I had a feeling
The guys in the t-shirts aren't in the jet
And so do you try and commute back and forth every night from a gig?
If I'm close enough
And if I'm close enough to either Austin or Denver
Which is my hangout
What was your first job in Nashville?
My first job was playing guitar with Bobby Sykes
And we did a tour from Nashville
It was a three-day tour
It went from Nashville to Bangor, Maine
To Plattsburgh, New York
And back to Nashville
This is grueling
It's great
And we got a speeding ticket in Virginia
And missed the first date
We were only getting $25 a day
So they went half of the gig
Yeah, yeah
And then my next job was with Ray Price
Ray Price, for whom you wrote Nightlife?
Yes
Now, can you tell the people what you sold that song to him for?
Actually, the truth of the matter is
Ray, if you're listening, I'm sorry, pal
I wrote the song when I was still living in Houston
It was a few years before I got to Nashville
And Ray recorded it
And, you know, he did a great job on it
But I had already recorded it myself before
Yeah, but who owns the rights to that now?
I sold that song to three people
For $100
And it took all three of them together up $100
And I sold another song called Family Bible for $50
For the same three people
Yeah
No problem there?
No lawsuits?
No fistfights?
No, not really
Because I really needed the money at the time
Now, you also started performing much earlier than that
Though when you were six years old
You were giving
You were reading poetry for folks?
Oh, yes, yes
Well, actually, I was
We would have on Sundays
What they call all-day sing-ins
And dinner on the ground
And everyone would bring a covered dish
I was probably about five years old
Yeah
And I was wearing a little white sailor suit
Short breeches and red trim
And I had a poem to do
And they were going to introduce me
Into this little tabernacle
Where we all would sing songs
And do whatever, you know, you could do
So they introduced me and I got up there
But my nose had started to bleed
I'd been taking my nose, right?
Well, five-year-old boys do that sometimes
What are you going to do, yeah
And, yeah, you're sitting around
Yeah
So you pick your nose
And it started bleeding
Just as I started up to do my poem
So I had to hold my nose
And do my poem
Which was
What are you looking at me for?
I ain't got nothing to say
If you don't like the looks of me
Just look the other way
And that was my first performance
Sure
And from then on
Show business was for you
Nothing scared me from there
We have
I don't even know how old this is
Our head writer owns this
I'll give you an idea of our head writer
But
It's a plastic Willie Nelson guitar
And if you don't mind
Would you sign that for him?
His name is Steve O'Donnell
Sure
Yeah, we get a pen
And also
When you were on the show
With Barbara Walters
Anything going on there
With you and Barbara?
Well, not on camera
No
We have to applause
For station identification
Willie Nelson will be back
You're going to sing another song
Thank you very much
Oh, once again
Ladies and gentlemen
And we're very pleased about this
Here he is
Willie Nelson
Singing
Always on my mind
Maybe I didn't love you
Quite as good as I should have
Maybe I didn't treat you
Quite as good as I should have
If I made you feel set the best
Girl, I'm sorry I was blind
But you were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
Maybe I didn't hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
I guess I never told you
That I am so happy that you're mine
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
But you were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
Tell me
Tell me
Tell me that your sweet love hasn't died
And give me
Give me one more chance
I wish to keep you satisfied
I'll keep you satisfied
Little things I should have said and done
Little things I should have said and done
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
But you were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
Little things I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
I should have said and done with my mind
And I should have said and done with my mind
And I should have said and done with my mind
And I should have said and done with my mind
