you know uh uh we did something fun today here's you know if you work in an
office building
and you're looking for fun i mean the kind of fun that busts up the daily boredom
of your
of your job there in the office building do what we do here at 30 rockefeller
plaza now this this
building paul will back me up on this is nothing if not an intricate maze of
elevator activity
there are elevators going up we yeah we got them coming down as well and there
there must
be hundreds of elevators and we spend a lot of our day in the elevator so here's
what you do
if you're like us just get in there with a group of friends and maybe maybe
maybe maybe a stooge
and maybe and maybe maybe and maybe a stooge from another floor now when you
hop in by predetermined
signal try and get the control panel to slide open do like that and the control
panel will just
drop right open if it's a ge elevator like you have here you reach in and you
grab the toggle switch
that's marked lights you throw the light switch the lights go off and you just
scream like lunatics
it's a lot of fun and then you you flip them back on and then look at the stooge's
face yeah
there's the real excitement and comedy in the building
hi you can use that at home i just tell that on myself there okay here it's uh
viewer mail time
ladies and gentlemen i have in my hand
you understand what i'm talking about there's one person on the elevator a
group of friends
three get on they now they know what they're going to do they turn out the
lights and scream wouldn't
that be fun yeah i got it yeah yeah did you do that today we do it every day we
do it we do it every
damn day and we love it uh uh letter number one dear dave actual letters did i
point that out
recently on your show i saw a hal gurney network time killer of course hal gurney
our emmy award
winning director and racing legend hal gurney uh call me crazy but isn't that
what your whole show is
sincerely jeff pierce white river jensen vermont well well no jeff that
certainly is not true our program
is very carefully crafted and we take a lot of pride in it let me show you an
actual breakdown now of an
average show and you'll see that it's a lot more than just a time killer i'll
use this giant production
chart here bailey if you can't get in here on this and we'll take a look at how
this works this is this
is an outline a rundown for uh any show that we've done over the last 10 years
we usually lead off the
program by stalling like that elevator story then yeah then we then we go from
that we go to a time killer
and now the next block is what we call padding and that leads directly into the
filler now
now from the filler we go right into a time waster and and that's followed by
more stalling and then
of course at the end of the night we finish up with some dead air so that's
that's how we put a show
together we had some dead air right there a minute ago a little earlier than we
planned on it but well
hell we'll take it anywhere we can get it that dead air is not easy to come by
uh dear dave letter number two begins what would happen if you would put the
wrong side up on a
package of microwave popcorn cory johnson malone wisconsin uh kind of a a
cooking question the wrong
side up on microwave popcorn uh geez you know cory i don't i don't think it
really makes any difference
uh i believe nothing would happen it's uh simply just cooking instructions
probably has something to do with
uh the oil or how many kernels get popped but for my money corey you can go
right ahead and microwave
that popcorn any way you want what possible difference could it make
came within three feet of the window but yet there was actual broken glass
sound waves
sound waves are a very powerful force and i don't believe we fully understand
them yet we'll
ask carol gold when she comes out here about sound waves and dead air when she
speaking of dead air get ready for some big dead air
morty morty morty let me know when the rocket gets here
no he's not here we had a little scheduling mix-up uh dear dave letter number
four begins
do you ever have the urge to go back to the 70s just wandering sincerely jazzman
john nichols
rutherfordton north carolina huh
and and thank god it didn't go through the window
we'd be fishing this baby out of the hudson
so so you mean we're only up to letter number three
i had perhaps wishful thinking on my part
letter number three dear dave uh why can't you do this stupid show in five days
do you have another
job wash cars or something i want to know i don't like the repeats wally m osman
folsom california
wally i'm sorry but again you apparently don't understand how television is
produced it takes a great deal of work and uh the home viewer hardly ever gets
to see all of the
amount of work that goes into producing this show for example we use monday to
prepare for the week
ahead how about this one when i look good in this pastry one all right here
this one this one with the
sort of okay hey do you like this one here no all right maybe i could wear this
one on the wednesday
show no okay i think you're gonna like this one no no okay here how about this
one no too flashy
all right all right this one no not enough light ah how about this one hey that'll
be good for anton
all right here do you like god in heaven i love that right now we're talking
how about this one here
no no no no no okay here this one makes you look norwegian uh-huh
not a bad i think the jukes are beginning to regret the gig here we go yeah
all right letter number four dear dave do you ever have the urge to go back to
the 70s
yeah you remember this one just wondering sincerely jasmine john nichols rutherfordton
north carolina
i'm i'm sorry john if if you thought we were going to get a be doing some kind
of little silly uh skit
here with uh comedy makeup and dresses from the 70s and goofy clothing from the
70s well you're wrong
we're not going to do a little i'm sorry we're not there'd be no there'd be no
little comedy skit
about how silly we dressed in the 70s i'm sorry damn yeah
hey everybody look it's those actors who are in the mind squad
excuse me i'm sorry excuse me folks folks can i have your attention excuse me
these are not the
people you're thinking of you're thinking of clarence williams iii michael cole
and peggy lipton
that's not who these people are i'm sorry sorry hey everybody look it's chad
everett from medical
center
okay that's our viewer mail for another week we're going to do a commercial and
then we'll continue
with dave's dead air hour right after you watch
