our first guest is a lovely actress starring in a new motion picture entitled
igby goes down
it opens in selected cities i just pray to god your city has been selected
on september 13th ladies and gentlemen here is the lovely amanda pete everybody
how are you doing
very well thank you nice to have you on the show i'm very very excited to be
here well that's very
huge fan oh no no you don't need to say that no i don't need it's not i really
am well i feel the
same about you we've been trying you don't need to say that no but it's true we've
been we've been
trying to get you because we would see you in all of these uh wonderful movies
and i would say well
what about her why can't we get her and the answer was always well she's busy
and it was it was starting
to hurt my feelings it's no i don't want your feelings to be hurt i i'm your
biggest fan i'm
a native new yorker and i well that's very sweet of you to say you don't need
to say that right
uh well how was your labor tell us about your labor day did you have a decent
day it was pretty
uneventful actually i just um i my sister's getting married oh that's good october
19th my older sister
so um we went bridesmaid dress shopping which isn't always right the most
exciting way to spend your
labor day but and is it going to be a large big big wedding it's going to be a
really big wedding yeah
and um although are you envious that your sister are you you're not married are
you no i'm i'm i'm i'm
so now uh now when your sister gets married does that uh put make me feel
really sort of
you know jealous and and upset with myself and encouraged low self-esteem well
i i wouldn't
have gone quite that far but i mean make me feel like i'll never meet anyone
and then i'm getting
older and things aren't going to work out for me yeah kind of that's really
what i was hinting at but
i'm 30 and how old is your sister 32. now what does she do she's a doctor oh
that's good she's uh
specializes in internal medicine and she's um it's a good thing she's a doctor
because
i'm a hypochondriac is that right and and how does it manifest itself your hypochondriac
i know it's kind of a big yeah i didn't know where i was going there yeah but
but are you just kind of
nuts or semi nuts about that i i don't know how you read me so well i'm i'm
that i mean that i'm nuts
it's like you just hit the nail on the head really i'm so i'm crazy are you i
get a scratch and i
page her in the middle of her hospital and i'm like neosporin or or what do i
put on this hydrogen
peroxide and she's like goodbye because she's really getting it done there she's
she works at
temple hospital in philadelphia they get two-thirds of the gunshot victim
wounds in the state right and
she's a very serious busy woman and i'm a big pain in yes you feel like a nanny
i know i'm sympathetic
because i also am a hypochondriac hypochondriac but i'll tell you the best how
are you doing there
dave with that word the best thing for hypochondriacal behavior
is open-heart surgery
i heard you were worried that you had the west nile virus and i almost wasn't
going to come on the
show because then i started thinking maybe you were going to give it to me and
then or the two of us
were going to be sitting here like this right or is it not contagious that way
i don't know how you
i think mosquitoes and now organ donations they think maybe get it that way and
and but i wasn't
kidding there was about a half an hour last week where i thought i had west nile
virus is that is that
how you are yes i definitely think i have something about once a day yeah yeah
if i have a blister i think
it's you know something very serious like gangrene and you know do you have
medical books you look up
symptoms sometimes i do but really i just call my sister and i think that's why
maybe that's why you know sometimes she doesn't return yeah now uh would you
like to be married
yourself i mean you're still quite young but would you like to get married so
much really are you
available well
i'd have to make a call
uh let me where's the phone let me just see what i can
isn't the phone right let's see what we can put together
uh well i mean you're certainly a lovely woman and i imagine you have boyfriends
and stuff like
that don't you probably have a of course you do i don't have a boyfriend no and
i've been on some
terrible dates of late yeah i'll tell you what i would love to hear about the
terrible dates
and we'll be right back and you can tell us all about it yeah and i don't want
to embarrass you but
tell us about a date that it was memorable because it wasn't quite you know
right or i can't go into
it in too much detail i don't want real details and i don't want names or
anything but just you know
highlights um i went on a date recently where where someone was talking about
their mother way too much
and i can't it was literally like a saturday night live skit where where
someone's sort of like
she's just so amazing and we're so close and um i actually it was so horrible
that i i tried to dial
my girlfriend under the table i tried i dialed her number because i wanted her
to be able to witness
which i know is really mean but but i needed to find something to kind of do
you know what provoked
this why did the guy feel the need to share all of this with you well dave i
mean paging dr freud
i don't know but i tried not to ask too many questions about why he was so
intimate with his mother
do you uh do you have other friends who find the same dilemma or does this seem
to be your problem
no my friends were really like cliches were cliches of women in in our 30s who
watch sex in the city and
and moan the fact that there aren't enough eligible men and i have one friend
who who uh you know went
on the internet to to try to hook up with someone and he seemed lovely they had
a good correspondence and
then he came to pick her up for the date and she came downstairs and got in the
car and his parents
were in the car
well what's that all about was he dropping them off or what's the no they were
accompanying them on the
date oh my god that's no good and she went uh did you did you have a chance to
have a vacation this
summer did you have time i did i had um i had time off not by choice what does
that mean well it just
means you know i i didn't get a job dave oh no no don't give people the wrong
impression you're in
great demand oh yes i am whoops so you go on vacation so i went to paris to
live there for a month i um
sublet an apartment with a girlfriend of mine and so we kind of um i guess we
sort of fancied ourselves
to be artsy left bank you know expats living in paris in the 20s how'd that go
was it good
it was a little bit pathetic we would we would like we got like espadrilles and
wore the striped shirts
and the berets and i would think that the french in particular the french men
would probably just
be i mean you would i think would be right you know they're exactly what they're
looking for don't
you think i mean you have kind of an audrey hepburn sort of a deal thing here
you know bless you
this is really good for my my self-esteem that i'm talking to you right now
then after paris where did you go um we when we we were in paris we took a trip
to corsica and i
think the highlight of my summer was that i went diving for the first time
which for a hypochondriac
is not you know i mean they tie rocks around your waist to make you sink
further down are you saying
that's right because you know no because i've done that oh you have but it was
in a pool in new jersey
and i know what you're talking about did you get the the pain in your ears i
did and sometimes i got
so scared that i was dying but i went anyway i was really cranky about it i don't
like you know it's
it's claustrophobic it's my vacation and i don't really want to partake in
athletics and and there's
all this gear and you're carrying this oxygen tank but um was it beautiful once
you got under the
water it was so beautiful and i actually felt very peaceful and serene and i
even felt strangely
romantic with my diving instructor because you know everything's sort of undulating
under there and
i know it wasn't like that at the pool in new jersey well
oh my uh well you know you're uh you're a lovely woman i'm so happy to finally
uh meet you because
i have enjoyed your work for years and years and i hope you come back and i
hope things are good for
for you i would love to come all right nice meeting you it's the lovely amanda
pete everyone we'll be back
you
