Okay, ladies and gentlemen, hang on to something because, yes, that's right,
once again, it's time for another episode of Dave's Rod and Reel.
Hi, and welcome to another edition of Dave's Rod and Reel. I'm Dave Letterman,
and of course, you know my musical director, Paul Schaefer.
Nice to see you.
Boy, it's a beautiful day out here on the Hudson River, and in just a couple of
seconds, we're going to be pushing off and heading out to open ocean to do some
saltwater fishing.
That's right, Dave. And, you know, I'm especially excited today because our
guide is the award-winning deep-sea fisherman, Chris Elliott.
Howdy, boys.
Hi, Chris.
Hi, Chris. Thank you very much for joining us today.
What accent will you be using this afternoon?
I've been doing my southern boy accent.
Uh-huh. And what kind of fish are we going after today?
We're going to go after some porpoise.
I thought we were going after bluefish. Aren't porpoise illegal?
It's illegal, but you get out on the water, and you can do just about any kind
of shit you want to do.
Besides, if we eat them out there and get rid of the evidence, no one will know.
Right, boys?
Come on.
Don't be close.
Yeah.
Dave, I don't know.
I don't want any trouble.
You think we should get on the boat?
Oh, yeah. What the heck? It's going to be a lot of fun.
The guy's just colorful.
That's it. It's just the character, you know?
Chris, why don't we drop an anchor? I thought we were going to go out and do
some deep sea fishing.
Yeah, well, that would be nice. There's just one problem.
We're out of gas.
Out of gas?
How the hell does that happen?
I forgot. I'm sorry. I have a trial coming up.
Okay, I'll tell you what. Let's take a second here to talk about the gear we're
using today.
As you can see, I'm using a standard fly rod.
And, of course, I have the Pflugger Metalist fly reel with the anti-reverse.
And I have a Seamaster Mark II fly reel with direct drive, rim control, a brand-new
cork grip.
And is that a half-wells, Paul, on that?
No, this is a full wells, Dave.
Yeah, that's terrific.
And, Chris, what are you using today?
Well, I'm using a broom handle and some twine and a hook.
But if things get really rough, I've got my Seamaster Mark 20 with direct drive.
And one hell of a recoil.
I think this guy ever won any awards for this nonsense.
Maybe at a pie-eating contest.
Yeah, right.
Hey, hey!
You guys making fun of me?
No, Chris, no.
We're just throwing ourselves.
You know, sometimes I wonder if it's all worth it, throwing our hooks in,
hooking helpless, innocent fish and yanking them up here on the boat
and cutting them open and seeing all their guts fly out all over the place for
no reason.
Then I think, what the hell, they're good eating, right?
Hold it.
Wait a minute.
I got one.
I got one.
Okay, hold on there, buddy.
Let me give you a hint.
Hold on there.
Oh, boy.
That's a big one.
Yeah, he's going to be huge.
Yeah, it's about a 25-pounder.
Hold on there.
Okay.
You've got to treat her like a woman.
Yank her, crank her, but don't stay around to think, all right?
You're doing just fine.
You know, you've really got the build for fishing.
Yeah, I think I have it.
Oh, that's all right.
I'll just help you out.
I think I have it now.
No, that's okay.
Get off!
Hey!
All right.
Oh, boy, look at this.
What's that?
Woo!
Well, that's a beauty.
That's a great one.
You got yourself a trout.
Wow.
That's a red-bellied trout.
That is a beauty.
Dave, is there any more water?
Shh, Paul, it'll be all right.
Take it easy.
It's going to be all right.
No, no.
Take it easy.
Shh.
Put your head back down.
It'll be all right.
Dave, I need water.
Hey, what's that?
Huh?
What the hell is that?
There's nothing.
Give me that.
I'm going to share that with everybody.
Paul, we have something to eat.
There's food, Paul.
Get up.
We have some food.
That's it.
All right, all right.
I have enough of you, Captain Bly.
I am in hell, sir.
Say good night, them nuts.
Dave?
Dave, what do you think?
Should we get on the boat or not?
Yeah, maybe not.
I don't think so.
I know.
Let's get out of here.
Come on.
Hey, come on, boys.
Time's a waste.
Some tide's going out.
Let's go.
Listen, Chris, we're going to forget about the whole thing.
We got to go back to the house and do some dusting.
Yeah.
Come on.
What am I supposed to do?
We'll see you later.
We'll just give you a call.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
Get out of here.
Oh, well, and a do.
Do you first got his mate?
Oh, God.
Yes.
That certainly was refreshing, wasn't it?
We'll be right back with John Phillips after you take a look at this, folks.
Thank you.
Thank you.
