And here on Who Asks For It, what can we do for you, Kate?
I was just curious, who is your favorite actor?
Oh, you know, that's a pretty good question.
And I want to be careful here because I don't want to step on anybody's toes.
But they always refer to this guy as like the current generation Jimmy Stewart.
And he's a double Academy Award winner and a great guy.
He's been on the show many times.
Very, very friendly.
Very likable.
I'd have to go with Tom Hanks.
Tom Hanks.
Thank you.
Thank you, Kate.
Well, there you go.
That's Who Asks For It.
We'll be right back with Matt Damon, ladies and gentlemen.
Thanks for helping out in our little skit.
I appreciate that.
Tom Hanks, huh?
Yeah, the skit man.
He's damn good, though.
He is good.
He is good.
Now, I saw this, The Bourne Ultimatum.
This is the third one in the series, isn't it?
Yeah.
Wow.
How impressive is this?
Because not only is it multiple locations, it's all over the globe, as you know.
But what a lot of work.
I mean, my God, you're huffing and puffing and punching guys and stuff like
that.
It must be terribly exhausting to do these films.
It is.
Yeah, it is.
And none of us ever thought we'd make it to three of them.
Is that right?
Yeah.
The first one.
Actually, the first movie, when it came out, my career was kind of, you know,
there's an
ebb and flow to things.
And we were at an ebb.
Oh.
But you had done major films before this, right?
Yeah.
But there's kind of an unwritten rule of three, kind of a three strikes and you're
out type
thing, just box office-wise.
So I'd done two movies that I was proud of, but they hadn't done very well.
What were the films?
All the Pretty Horses, which the directors cut, I just loved, but that wasn't
what was
released.
I see.
So that was a little problem.
And The Legend of Bagger Vance, which didn't do very well at the box office.
But it was Will Smith and Charlize.
About a golfer, is that right?
That's right.
Yeah, I remember that.
But neither of them did very well.
You saw them, I guess, which is good.
I do what I can.
Yeah, I appreciate that.
Your ten bucks really helped.
No, no, I appreciate it.
But when the third movie, the third movie was about a year, the first Born,
which was
my third strike, was about a year delayed in coming out.
We'd done about four rounds of reshoots.
And the writer of the film, who had written a terrific script, was the first
writer in
the history of Hollywood to arbitrate against himself so that he didn't get
sole credit,
so that he actually shared credit for the movie with someone else because he
didn't want
to take the bullet alone.
So there were some signals.
Yeah.
Yes, but unfounded completely, as it turned out, right?
No, it was kind of one of those things where we all got together and we rescued
it in the
11th hour and it went on to be what it was, but there were these signals there
that made
everybody think it was going to be, you know, the third strike.
And did you really take that to heart?
You thought, oh my gosh, I may have to go back and start selling papers or
whatever.
I don't know what you used to sell.
What did you used to sell?
Well, Amway.
You used to sell Amway.
I pretty much sell Amway.
No, no, but I did actually, I kept hearing, I'm from Boston, so I kept hearing
Sean McDonough's
voice in my head going, big swing and a miss, you know.
So, but no, I thought, so my career was in this kind of low point and then the
movie came
out and I had all these film offers literally the Monday after the movie opened.
Oh, great, great.
Well, it turned out to be a wonderful thing.
And not only this summer you have the number three, but then you were also in
the other
big blockbuster of the summer with your buddy George Clooney and Brad Pitt and
those guys
in the Oceans 13.
In the Oceans 13, yeah, yeah.
Wow, that's great.
Now, do you have your star on Hollywood Boulevard?
Do you have one of those?
Yeah.
Wow.
And then also, they used to, and I don't know if they do it anymore at Grauman's,
it's
not Grauman's Chinese Theater anymore.
Yeah, sure.
It's still called Grauman's?
That's what I call it.
Yeah.
People have put their hands and feet in the cement there.
Did they still do that?
They did.
I mean, we got to do it this summer.
I think I, George and Brad were doing it, so they let me do it too.
So, the three of us, we went with Jerry Weintraub, the famous producer, and we
all put our
hands and feet in the cement, and George called me the night before, like this
conspiratorial
phone call, going, listen, here's the thing.
And I take George's advice on all this stuff, because he's very good at this
stuff.
He goes, you got to get big shoes.
I'm sorry?
You got to get big shoes?
You got to get big shoes.
You got to get big shoes.
And I said, wait, what are you?
In the middle of the night.
In the middle of the night.
But I asked him what he meant, and he said that the concrete actually shrinks.
And I had remembered going there, and you go, and you see these footprints of
these, and
you're like, Robert Mitchum had size 5 feet?
It can't be, you know?
John Wayne had girl feet?
No, it's impossible.
Wow.
So, I looked through my closet, and I got the biggest shoes I had.
I wear an 11, but I had a 12, so I got the 12s, and I, you know, talked away,
and I went.
And George showed up wearing size 14s.
Wow.
Wow.
So.
How does he know stuff like this?
I don't know.
I don't know.
I think he has people out there investigating.
He's got teams of people working for him, I'm sure.
Oh, man.
Before we get too far down the road, do you have a little Matthew McConaughey
in here?
Oh, man.
Just a little?
Oh, man.
Just before we get out of time here, just a little.
The last time I did it was here.
Yeah, and we loved it.
We all loved it, and it's all we talk about.
Matthew McConaughey taking his shirt off, doing whatever he's doing.
Running around, having a beer.
I'll tell you what.
The Bourne Ultimatum's coming out on Friday.
I might just have to take my shirt off.
I still haven't seen Matthew.
I mean, he's just going to break me in half when he sees me.
The great thing about it is not only does he sound exactly like that, you know
he says
stuff like that.
That's the best part of it.
Oh, golly.
You still in Florida?
You live down there?
I do, yeah, yeah.
Miami?
Miami, yeah.
You enjoying yourself?
I like it down there, yeah.
It's where I am with my family.
Kids happy?
Everybody's happy down there, yeah.
It's a quiet place, and it's away from the industry and stuff, so I like it.
So do you kind of stick out because you're Mr. Big Shot in Miami, or are they
accustomed
to that sort of thing there?
Well, no.
I mean, everybody's pretty cool.
I did have one incident where I've gotten into trouble a couple times in my
life by trying
to use my celebrity or whatever.
Whenever I try and do that, it backfires hardly.
I goeth before a fall.
That's right, and so I try not to be too proud.
I understand.
But, yeah, so these people called me, and they said, listen, there's this radio
contest,
and I was like, come on, please don't, you know, and they said, no, no, they're
going
to give $10,000, or this trip to the Bahamas, which is worth $10,000, to the
most famous
person who calls in.
And I said, well, I don't want to do that, and they said, no, no, no, we'd like
to do
it.
They ran an auto painting shop.
They said, we'd like to do it on behalf of our auto painting shop, but if you
did it,
we were going to donate everything to the children's hospital, to the Joe DiMaggio
Children's
Then it's fine.
So I said, well, and I was still on the fence, because I didn't, you know, but
I was listening,
driving my stepdaughter to school all week, listening to the most famous person
they had
by the Friday, which was the deadline, was Lonnie Anderson.
You know, so Lonnie Anderson had called in, the weather guy.
Yeah.
Really, you know, and so I thought, you know, I might have a shot at this thing.
Lonnie Anderson's pretty good, though.
She's terrific, and so, but so I kind of weighed it, you know, I weighed my
options,
and with, with 10 minutes to go on the deadline, I called the auto body people.
I said, listen, I'll make the call.
That's great.
And so I called them up and, you know, I did the interview for five minutes and
I, and I
very nice feeling good about myself.
And I saw the people later that night and I, you know, Hey, all right, we did
it.
And they said, no, uh, we lost.
Really?
And I said, Lonnie Anderson beat me?
And it turned out that with about a minute to go on the deadline, Sean Connery
had called.
Oh, that's awful.
It's awful.
Having no idea that I'd called, I'm sure, I'm sure he didn't know.
I'm sure he didn't know that I called.
If you're going to lose, Sean Connery, you know, it's a good guy to lose to.
That's right.
There's a Hall of Famer right there.
He's no Tom Hanks.
Exactly.
No.
No Matthew McConaughey either.
Um, now, uh, let's show folks a clip here.
Now, this thing opens on Friday and this will be the third.
Will there be more after this one?
Because I know in this one, and maybe I shouldn't say this, but I know the
ending is ambiguous.
Right.
Not ambiguous, but you know what I mean.
Yeah, ambiguous.
So, will there be, do you think there will be or not another one?
Uh, I...
Or have you already shot the fourth?
No, no.
No, we, uh, you know, maybe down the line if they came up with another one.
I mean, we really like, just making three movies that are good is really hard
to do.
And people like this one, so we're just going to put this one out there and see
what happens.
Well, then I bet there'll be a fourth one.
But the thing I noticed about this is that, uh, this guy knows how to do stuff
because he's
been trained to know how to do stuff.
And he's really pretty good with his fists.
Right.
So, when you beat a guy up, it's not just your standard beating a guy up.
I mean, it's really beating a guy up.
Yeah.
I, I couldn't get over that one guy.
You just pummel him and pummel him and pummel him.
And then, when you think it's over, then you strangle him.
I thought, wow, that's pretty impressive.
Yeah, that's, that's...
That's kind of the message we like to put out in the summertime.
Well, it works.
Anyway, let's, uh, what, what is this?
And, oh, how about Julia Stiles?
Boy, she's great.
Yeah, she's terrific.
What are we going to see here?
We've got a scene with Julia Stiles, um, where we first meet up and we, we're
not expecting
to see each other.
And we, uh, basically decide to, uh, go on the run, uh, together.
We'll take a look at the Bourne Ultimatum.
Oh, man.
Oh, man.
There it is.
The Bourne Ultimatum opens Friday.
Good to see you again, Matt.
Thanks a lot.
Enjoy your summer, sir.
We'll be right back here with Jeff Waltman, everybody.
