You know, our first guest from his work on Saturday Night Live and his very
successful comedy album,
he also has a brand new motion picture entitled Happy Gilmore, which opens on
Friday.
Ladies and gentlemen, here is Adam Sandler.
Yes, sirree.
Adam, Adam, Adam.
I saw you were funny on the Espy.
Oh, God bless you, Anne.
As always, thank you for putting on a little something special for the show.
I don't know how to do this.
Hey, how you doing?
I'm good, I'm good.
Things are going great for you now, aren't they?
I feel nice, thank you.
I'm very superstitious, you know.
Really?
Today's the 12th, you know, I feel great about that.
12's my lucky number, and 12's, you know, Joe Namath was my favorite player,
you know, number 12.
And 12 was, you know, like I did 12 push-ups today, drank 12 cokes, and my
album's coming out today on the 12th.
Things are going great.
Yeah, 12, 12's a good number.
What is it?
Today's, I'm sorry, today's the 13th.
Today's a, today's a, we're all gonna die!
I want to talk to you about something.
During the holiday season.
Yes, sir.
During the holiday season.
Hanukkah, Christmas.
Yeah.
That holiday season.
Yeah.
I heard you're, you have a special Hanukkah song.
Yeah, that was it.
Thank you.
Now, I want to tell you something, Adam.
Yeah.
I listen to the radio every day, like six, seven, eight hours a day.
Yeah.
And I, I loved your song the first hundred times I heard it.
That thing was played like every 15 minutes.
They played a lot.
It was up, I think it was up to the population of Jewish people in the town.
You know, like in New York, they played it like 20,000 times a week or
something.
In Wyoming, they played it negative six.
What the hell is that?
Yeah.
Did you make a lot of dough off of that thing?
I don't know.
It's not about the dough, baby.
No, no, I don't.
It's not about, baby, that's not about.
No, of course not.
I, I, I, that, that Hanukkah song, you know, I listed a bunch of people who
were, who were
Jewish in the song and it, it backfired a little bit because some celebrities,
uh, were mad
that I didn't mention them, you know.
You can't mention everybody, for heaven's sake.
Well, I couldn't, but some guys got offended.
Anthony Quinn stopped me on the street.
You know, why didn't you mention me?
I'm like, oh, you're not Jewish, right?
And he goes, oh yeah, you're right.
He just thought you were mentioning celebrities.
He goes, if you do a song about Soviet and Greek, you mention me.
Now, what are you, uh, you're, you're still a kid, right?
You're not very old.
How old a guy are you now?
I'm, I'm 29.
You always think I'm a little kid.
29 years old.
Well, because I think the first time you were on our old show, you were like.
I was a kid.
Yeah, you were just a kid.
I was a goofy young boy.
Now, you're making a lot of dough.
Oh, yeah.
You're doing pretty well.
You have to be careful with your money.
Are you, are you doing all right?
I do.
I got money.
I don't know what to do with it.
You know, I, uh, got money.
I, I don't blow it or I, I bought some new friends.
I bought some new friends.
You want new friends?
I did.
I pay these guys like 50 G's a year.
All they have to do is twice a week say, Adam, you're the greatest.
I go, thanks.
So, uh, you know, I, I really am.
Yeah.
Yeah.
They go, hey, let me buy you some shoes.
Oh, shoes.
I get them shoes.
In addition to the 50 grand, they get shoes.
Well, they're nice.
Sweet deal.
Once you get to know these guys, I paid them in the beginning.
I didn't know them.
I paid them.
But now I like them.
You know, I, uh, I got some guy, he tells me what to do with my money now too,
you know,
cause I don't, I don't, I'm not, I don't know what to do with it.
I don't know.
So he, uh, he, he tells me what to do.
And he says, I got to spend some money, you know, for the taxes and all that.
So I bought an airplane.
Bought an airplane.
And, uh, I'm afraid to fly.
So I just drive it around LA and all that.
I just, I throw peanuts out the window.
We have some peanuts, you know, but I broke it.
I was at the Burger King drive-thru.
I knocked one of the wings off.
I made it all up, David.
I made that up.
I made it up.
How about your family?
Are they thrilled for you?
Uh, you know, well, my, my dad's happy about, uh, the Happy Gilmore is a golf
movie.
He's a big golf, golfer, my dad.
And, uh, Happy Gilmore is a golf movie.
And, uh, and Lee Trevino is in my room.
Lee Trevino is a little cameo.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I'm not, I'm, I didn't do any scenes with Lee Trevino, so I didn't really
meet him.
But my dad was so excited that he was in the movie.
I lied to my dad.
I said, yeah, I met him.
And, uh, my dad's like, really?
I go, yeah, he's a great guy.
And then I, I thought my dad didn't believe me, so I started making things up
about the
guy, you know, to make it look like I was really in the room with him.
So I'm like, he's got a nervous tick.
At the end of all his sentences, he goes, whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo.
So I'm like, whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo.
That's nice.
I don't know, I feel stupid.
I'm afraid my dad's going to meet him now and go, he doesn't do that.
And I'm going to go, you caught him on a good day.
He's got it under control, finally.
At long last, our prayers have been answered.
The film opens, uh, you know who was here last night, a buddy of yours, Chris
Farley.
Farley is the kid.
Oh, there's something wrong with that guy, isn't there?
Yeah, he has a lot of fun.
There's something really, really.
He's a great man.
Well, you know, it's nice that everybody in your group here that kind of
started together
and worked together on Saturday Night Live has now gone on to take this other
major step
and you both have huge movies out.
It's great.
It must be very satisfying.
It feels good.
You've always been very nice to us, and thank you.
Well, that's going to change.
Unless I get my shoes.
Why?
Eddie!
Why?
Eddie!
Eddie!
Eddie!
You going to get him on the show, Paul?
Is he going to sit in with the band?
I've been calling him.
Have you talked to him?
He's not returning my calls yet.
It'll be a big night.
Get that Eddie Vedder sitting in here.
I'll give him another call.
Why?
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na.
Trouble, young man.
Oh, I don't know.
Eddie.
Eddie, are you good?
That was Eddie Vedder.
Let's talk a little bit more about the film.
You mentioned Lee Trevino has a small part in it, and also I've seen from the
commercials
of the film, Bob Barker, Mr. Price is right.
Bob Barker in the show.
How did you get along with Bob?
In fact, the scene is like you duke it out, you punch him, turn his lights out.
No, he ends up beating me up.
It's a, it's a, it's, we play a pro-am together and he gets mad at, he gets mad
at.
Now the film is, let's just talk about it, it's a hockey player who decides he's
better
at golf?
Well, he's got a good slap shot, but he's not a good skater.
So then he finds out he can drive a golf ball at 400 yards so he becomes a pro
golfer and
then Bob and him are playing together, Happy Gilmore and Bob and Happy's not
doing well
and then Bob is getting on Happy's nerves and Happy punches Bob in the face and
then Bob
beats the hell out of Happy.
And Bob Barker in real life, you know, when we were doing it, you know, he was
pretending
to be my friend the whole time, being very nice to me, hey Adam, and then when
they call
action, he'd get out of control and I hear him under his breath when he was
throwing jabs
going, I hate you.
Really?
You know, I hate you.
And he called me a loser.
Well, he's unbalanced.
He's a hothead.
That's all right.
Yeah, trouble, something wrong there.
That ain't right.
That ain't right.
I ate that.
I ate dinner with him.
You went out to dinner with mom?
Yeah, that was cool.
I ate, sat next to him and he's a big animal, right back to him.
Oh, that's right.
Animal, sure.
And I forgot, but then I remember, if I ordered chicken Marsala and I was
sitting next to him
eating chicken and he was eating his pasta with vegetables on top and I started
feeling
guilty, you know, because I remember once I had my chicken and he'd look at me,
you know,
he'd look at me like, why?
Why do you hurt the chicken?
I'd be, you know, like, I'm sorry.
He's like, that chicken has a family.
I was like, you can tell their family that they raised that tasty little
chicken.
So it sounds like Bob really is just soft in the head.
No, he's a nice guy.
He's a good, good guy.
This is the new one, isn't it?
New CD coming out today.
This is your second CD and it's being released today and I'm sure this has the
Hanukkah song
on there.
Yeah, yeah, but it has stuff on there that's a little nastier than not.
You're going to do something for us here tonight?
I'll sing you guys a little song.
This song is about a little kid who's very nice and then he grows up to be a
little out
of his mind, so I guess that kid could be me.
I don't know.
Here we go.
I used to ride my big wheel and sell lemonade, eat popcorn with grandpa while
we watched the parade.
I used to be the nicest kid in the neighborhood.
I only did the things that mama said I should, but now I just do whatever I
want.
I even whipped it out in a restaurant I used to.
I used to.
I'll clean the pot in the middle of town, then play kickball till the sun went
down.
But now all I do is get VD.
What the hell happened to me?
It makes no sense.
I can't believe I ended up.
I can't believe I ended up me.
I'm out of my gourd.
Will somebody please help me?
I'm kind of a weirdo.
All right.
Thanks very much.
Adam Sandler, congratulations.
This is the CD.
It's out today.
Yeah.
And Happy Gilmore opens on Friday.
Good luck, Adam.
Thank you for coming back.
Nice to see you.
Thank you.
I'll be right back.
It's a great show.
Nice job, Adam.
We'll be right back.
