Hi, everyone, and welcome to The Barbara Gaines Show.
My name's Paul Schaefer.
I'm substituting for Barbara this week.
And today, my guest is David Letterman.
Wow, what a thrill.
Thank you, Paul.
Good to see you again.
I'm so thrilled you were available.
Well, I was down the hall doing my Labor Day special.
Your own special?
Yeah.
I'm thrilled that you dropped in.
Well, I'm thrilled to see you filling in for Barbara Gaines
and a big shout-out to Barbara Gaines.
Hi, Barbara.
How are you doing?
Hope you had a great summer.
Take us through your summer, Paul.
I understand it was star-packed.
Well, as always, I hung out with my new crew, Demi Lovato, Dua Lipa.
What do you kids do when you get together?
We have pool parties a lot, and we talk about boys.
And, you know, it's more fun than you would think.
No, it sounds crazy fun to me, and I wouldn't have guessed, but who cares?
Good for you.
I'm very happy you're still getting it done.
And I'm about to do a show, and I've been speaking to you about it,
for my daughter, Victoria's Pet Rescue.
By the way, your daughter, Victoria, what I know of her firsthand and at arm's
length,
doing wonderful work in the world of pet rescue.
Thank you very much.
She sure is dedicated to it.
Yep, yep.
And I'm going to do a little fundraiser for her next week, September 13th in
Los Angeles
with a great songwriter, Jeff Barry, who one of the songs he wrote was Then He
Kissed Me.
He's going to sing it.
Oh, and what are some of the other hits?
I mean, this guy, a monument in his own right.
Yeah, Hanky Panky, Do What Diddy, Do Ron Ron, Be My Baby, the National Anthem.
And I could go on and on.
I honestly love you from the 70s.
So it'll be a night of memories and music.
Exactly, and sing-alongs.
You can't help but...
Oh, those are the songs everybody will sing of a certain generation.
I would be in that generation, but I won't be singing alone.
Yeah, well, if you were there, you wouldn't be able to help yourself.
Yeah.
Because when he sings Metam on a Monday and My Heart Stood Still, everybody's
just going
to say, Do Do Ron Ron Ron.
But the one that really rings the bell, as we say in the bell ringing business,
Be My Baby.
That is the one.
I stand at attention when that one comes on.
And then he wrote with his late wife, Ellie Greenwich, who was our dear friend,
the Christmas
Baby, Please Come Home song that we did every year, had darling love to, I
should say.
Full circle.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And so he was the composer.
Well, this would be a great night, and the proceeds go to help support Victoria
and her
ongoing effort to rescue pests.
And her rescue, which is, yeah, and it's called Pup Culture.
Pup Culture.
P-U-P, yeah.
Anyway, that's a plug.
Yeah.
Thanks for it.
And we do these things in our industry.
We plug, you know, I'll put, you plug a project of mine.
I might plug.
Why are you here, by the way?
Normally, we would be asking about your work.
I know.
No, I was just down the street.
But today you've chosen to come to us with something else.
I was just dropping off some dry cleaning.
Oh, I was.
And I happened to see your car parked out front, and I came right in.
Remember the one about the moth?
He could, you know, why are you here?
And I said, well, your light was on.
Yeah, your light was on.
That's right.
This is just us talking.
This was a Barbara Gaines show.
Carrying on?
Yeah.
Oh, I thought, oh, well, what does she do on her show?
Does she have any themes of it?
What is she talking?
Have you never seen the Barbara Gaines show?
I haven't caught it yet.
Does she have musical guests?
Wait a minute.
You've never seen the Barbara Gaines show?
Well, not yet.
I mean, is it network?
Yes.
Yes, it is.
It's a network show.
Doing quite well.
Didn't know she was so, you know, I'm trying to get tickets to Taylor Swift.
That's as far as I've gone.
Did you go to see Taylor Swift?
I haven't seen it yet.
Walter went to see Taylor Swift.
He says it's incredible.
Give us the rundown, Walter.
How long was the show?
Three and a half hours?
Three and a half hours.
Three and a half hours, I think.
Yeah, it was.
What was the venue?
SoFi Stadium?
SoFi Stadium.
SoFi Stadium, yes.
Which I've never been to.
Like 80,000 people?
I think something like that.
This woman is the queen of show business.
Yeah.
She's just...
Hands down, that's it.
Yes.
Anything she does, like, sells out.
Right.
She's just making money everywhere she can.
And she added some shows for 2024, two of which in my hometown, Indianapolis,
at Lucas
Oil Stadium, three shows.
And I'm going to be there, and we've been in communication with her team, and
it looks like
I'm going to come up on stage.
It'll be me and Ed Sheeran, and we're going to come up on stage with Taylor
Swift and sing
a couple of her songs.
And I'm scared silly, but so excited.
Do you know which ones of hers are you going to do?
What was the first day?
Oh, the one about the driver's license.
Well, that's someone different.
I like that one, too.
Yeah.
But of hers, I love...
Olivia Rodrigo.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Is that who you're doing, or are you doing Taylor Swift?
Taylor Swift.
Okay.
Yeah.
So that about wraps up the Barbara Gaines Show.
Paul, thank you very much for dropping by.
It's been a great thrill for me.
No, it's my...
I'm substituting.
I loved you.
Me and my parents used to stay up late and watch you.
Really?
Yep.
Thank you very much.
You're quite welcome.
Well, that's thrilling.
Okay.
Good night, Barbara.
This was no better than the actual Barbara Gaines Show.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
