My next guest. It's a treat that he is here tonight. In 1977, of course, this
man put Margaritaville on the map, and he also notoriously avoids cold weather,
so it's an extra special occasion to have him here tonight. Ladies and
gentlemen, please welcome Jimmy Buffett.
Right there. Good. Nice to see you. I really appreciate you showing up from
wherever it was you came.
To Miami today.
Miami. You don't like cold weather. I mean, who does? I guess people do, don't
they?
Well, I've spent a lot of time in the museum of making TV and movies.
Don't bring that up.
No, okay. I'm browsing through the set.
But you have a home in Colorado?
Well, I'm there part of the year and then down in Florida, and between the two
of them, I try to stay out of cold weather in Colorado.
Yeah. You lived in Key West for a while?
Yeah, for about seven years.
So it's just, I don't know, a little blood stand or too much garlic or
something. I don't know.
Now, do you live on a boat?
Not anymore. It's down in the harbor where I can see it. I went for a smaller
boat and a house on the hill. I guess that's a sign of middle age.
That could be a song, too. Smaller boat and a house on the hill.
There are a lot of people imitating them these days.
Now, what was it like, though, when you were living on a boat?
It was great, except my captain was one of my best friends, so when I was on
the road in exciting places like West Lafayette, Indiana, or Times Beach,
Missouri, on tour,
I'd be away, and I'd go back to the boat, and after dealing with the band,
sorry, boys, but you know, it's after eight or ten people on the road, I just
sort of like to be quiet, and I'd get back, and I'd have a crew and a captain
that would give me the same kind of non-quiet time as the band would on the
road.
See, that kind of takes the romance out of it, knowing that you had a crew and
a captain.
You probably have a butler and some sort of foreign maid.
No, just a road manager.
I cook for myself.
Are you able to sail by yourself?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, I mean, I do really sail.
There are a lot of people making sailing songs these days that, you know, they
look like they couldn't tie a knot in a hefty trash bag, but I can do that.
Now, wait a minute.
Was that some sort of backhanded reference at someone?
Yes, it was.
No, not at you.
No, no, I know that.
My records aren't doing that well, but...
Neither are mine these days.
Now, let's talk about your drinking and drug days.
It could be current.
I don't know.
Are you...
No, they're not.
I'm way beyond the statute of limitations, so...
Okay, but you have a reputation as a guy who is relaxed a lot of the time.
Yeah.
I knew I shouldn't have done television this year.
No, no, no.
This is fun.
You're enjoying yourself.
I am, okay.
Can I tell my mother it's not true or my daughter it's not true?
Well, is it true?
It's not true.
Well, how did you get the reputation?
I don't know.
It's probably somebody that looked like me.
I have an alter ego that goes out.
I mean, Frank Buffett.
So Frank gets in a lot of trouble.
But I get blamed for it.
Now, what...
It's just relaxing after the road.
Yeah.
It's nothing serious.
No, and you appear to be healthy.
And like you said, you did live through it.
So good for you, I guess.
Yeah.
It's still fun to visit occasionally.
Equal time for Nancy Reagan last week.
Yeah.
Now, you were going to, hopefully, going to do two songs here tonight.
Yeah.
Now, I had a song that I had asked if you would do.
And then I understand that the song that you were hoping to do first has a
special meaning
to you.
So I'm going to let you decide which one you want to do now.
Okay.
I'm going to do the new one.
Okay.
Because it got me out of trouble.
I was on tour in Tahiti.
You work some ugly places.
It's terrible.
Oh, my gosh.
But I had run away, and I missed my wife, our fifth wedding anniversary, and
the opening
of a play she was in.
And if you call from Pittsburgh and say, the plane's late, it's one thing.
But when you call from Papiete, nobody's doing that.
No, no, no.
So I came back with a song, and she's my worst critic always, and she liked it.
So it got me off the hook.
All right.
Good enough.
I certainly understand your interest in doing that song.
I hope everybody else does.
Now, you're going to do it right here.
Yes, I'm going to do it right here.
Is there anything I need to know about what we're going to hear?
You want me to introduce you?
I've already done that.
Introduce me.
All right.
It's called Distantly in Love.
Distantly in Love.
This, of course, is Jimmy Buffett, the song that he wrote about his wife when
he was goofing
off in Tahiti.
Thank you very much, David.
Payphones all were ringing as the crowd went roaring by.
Lovely dancers swaying to an howling lullaby.
Beside the southern ocean, taking stock of what's to be, writing you this
letter that you'll probably
never see.
But I can't help to be ruled by inconsistencies, not unique, just distantly in
love.
I tried to call me.
I tried to phone from Paris, thinking things could be arranged.
Me and you would rendezvous, but I found your number changed.
So I drove to San Francisco, where the crazy painter dwells, toasting our old
photographs still up there on the shelf.
But now I can't help to.
But now I can't help to be part of my own antiquities, not unique, just distantly
in love.
But now I can't be the one to fill your times and all your places.
I can't be the one to fill your blanks in empty spaces.
Now I heard it from a friend of ours I saw in Timber Bay.
You had a new lover who had stolen you away.
that could be the reason that I never got in touch.
May present slight problems if he loves you half as much as I, who can't help
but be ruled by my antiquities,
not unique, just distantly in love.
You know I can't help but be a part of my own philosophies, not unique, just
distantly in love.
Very nice.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Awfully nice.
Thank you.
Very nice.
Very nice, sir.
Now do we have, do you mind doing the other one?
I'll, yeah, this is your request?
Yeah, if you don't mind.
Okay.
This would be a real kick for me.
All right.
Now we're, oh, I think you're leaving.
No, I'm not leaving.
You can join the chorus if you like.
No, no, I won't be singing along, I'll just be here enjoying it.
Okay.
Okay.
This is, uh, come Monday, right?
Come Monday.
Okay.
And I, and thank you in advance for doing this.
Okay.
That's very nice.
This is a song that kept me from killing myself in the Howard Johnson's in
Marin County.
See, these stories are great.
That's a, that's a great story.
Well, it hit and I paid the rent and got my dog out of the pound and it was on.
You were really, uh, sad in a Howard Johnson's?
I was deathly depressed.
Yeah, I was in a Howard Johnson's under Mount Tamalpais in Marin County and
living there,
playing in San Anselmo.
It was awful.
And I wrote this song and it hit and the rest is history.
Yeah.
It has to do with the color of the roof, I think, of those places.
Yes.
It has to do with the size of the rooms and the food next door as well.
He said that.
Okay.
All right.
Here we go.
Heading out to San Francisco for the Labor Day weekend show.
I got my hushpuppies on.
I guess I never was meant for glitter, rock and roll.
And honey, I didn't know that I'd be missing you so.
But come Monday, it'll be all right.
Come Monday, I'll be holding you tight.
I spent four lonely days in a brown L.A. haze.
And I just want you back by my side.
Yes, it's been quite a summer.
Rent of cars and westbound trains.
And now you're off on vacation.
Some things are hard to explain.
Yes, it's I love you so.
That's the reason we just had to go.
But come Monday, it'll be all right.
Come Monday, I'll be holding you tight.
I spent four lonely days in a brown L.A. haze.
And I just want you back by my side.
And I can't help it, honey.
You're that much a part of me now.
Remember that night in Montana when we said there'd be no room for down.
Now, I hope you're enjoying the scenery.
I know it's pretty out there.
Yeah, we can go hiking on Tuesday.
California has worn me quite thin.
I just can't wait to see you again.
And come Monday, it'll be all right.
Come Monday, I'll be holding you tight.
I spent four lonely days in a brown L.A. haze and I just want you back by my
side.
