our first guest is a very funny and talented man who will soon have his own
television program
entitled the colbert rapport it premieres october 17th ladies and gentlemen on
comedy central
here's stephen colbert welcome to the program thank you very much for having me
tell me as
soon as you take your complimentary beverage this could take a while tell me
about uh
oh that's such a long wait back there yeah i came down to watch the grinder
girl oh i'm sorry
so disappointing believe me we're all disappointed that is nothing not to like
tell
tell us about your uh self your background your hometown your hopes your dreams
uh well um i am from uh i grew up on a little dirt road in south carolina
actually
in outside charleston south carolina um one of 11 brothers and sisters oh my
goodness 11 brothers
and sisters jimmy eddie mary billy margot tommy jay lou paul peter and stephen
wow yeah that's very
i hope that applause is for my mom and were you the the last of the baby yeah
oh my god now what was
that experience like for heaven's sakes well you know it seems i mean every
family seems normal to
the people who are in it but um uh but i mean my experience with it is uh my
mom had a little
trouble remembering the names at times you know you'd be doing something you
weren't supposed to do
and she would go jimmy any man number 11. good enough yeah she knew i was a
prime number and
and and how do the uh your brothers and sisters regard you still as the as the
baby well yeah i don't
think i'll ever not be the baby yeah yeah i mean i i think i mean they still
think of me as being 10
you know they you know they're like he's driving now did you notice that stephen
is shaving
like yeah i'm married and i have three children they're like he's so precocious
would you like
some candy now uh this was it this earlier this summer you took a uh pretty
impressive sailing trip
you left from oh yeah my hometown charleston are you a sailor no no i'm not a
sailor well how would a
thing like that happen for heaven's sakes uh i it took a week to get there and
my wife said i could go
and my rule is your wife says you can go away for a week you go whatever
whatever even if it's life
threatening how how large was the ship it was a 45-foot boat all right it was a
double-masted wishbone
catch dave i don't know what that means but they kept on telling me if anybody
asks they're very good
catch yeah and and uh other than get in the way since you don't sail what did
you do on the ship on
the boat well i was i was uh i was integral to the trip i was the uh i was the
chaplain chaplain yeah
and uh i was the cook and i was the morale officer and those uh those all came
together during grace
yeah did you have trouble with sea sickness um no no no um we found the rum
pretty early
they were supposed to be a dry cruise you know but everybody you know thought
of their locker
as the exception and and it was it was actually a race from uh charleston to
bermuda it was very
serious charleston south carolina to uh bermuda over a thousand miles of open
ocean through the bermuda
triangle in any trouble we lost um we lost our power our communication we lost
our toilets um we lost our
sales at one point and uh and it was a wonderful experience yeah yeah and and
where did you come
in in the in the race dead last dead last but as i said we thank you thank you
but it's it's really the
doing of it that's the significant part the accomplishment it's spending time
with your buddies
yeah you know and and would you consider doing it again oh sure sure um i
wouldn't uh it took seven
days i wouldn't do eight days you know next time i mean i think we really we
reached the limit of like
seven just just how close we could get you know when you lose your toilets on
day two and you know
five more days together that's that's that's crusty seamanship and uh but but
then the the great thing
is once you get to bermuda well then oh yeah yeah you get there at 10 30 on saturday
night and you
leave at 11 a.m on sunday morning because you thought you were getting there
wednesday i see i see
uh one more day and i think we would have gone cannibal how many uh how many
boats in the race
20 i think dead last out of 20 dead last out of 20 yeah so the lead boat the
lead boat beat us by four
days well yeah but i got great footage of me at sea in the full gear and i
brought it home to my wife
and she's like you're so manly you know look what daddy did something to show
your older brothers
and sisters exactly oh but can i say um happy birthday to my brother jim sure
okay um he's my
eldest brother and he's 95 and they're letting him stay up tonight um and they
gave him pudding or
something like that that's very nice happy birthday jim go to bed take care of
yourself buddy it was actually
last night um and and you you know a friend of ours amy sedaris oh yeah yeah i
know amy very well i've
known amy since before she had imaginary boyfriends uh-huh yeah whenever she's
on the show she talks
about i think it's ricky ricky ricky her imaginary boyfriend i knew her when
she had flesh and blood
boyfriends but i really think uh imaginary boyfriends are a better fit you know
yeah i can see that they
get her you know it's a meaning of the minds and and can you give us a
different perspective on the
woman i i find her fascinating well yeah i mean a lot of people from the
outside um you know you think
mary she might be wired a little differently or something like that but those
of us who know and
love her are very worried concerned yeah a little concerned you know so
beautiful she's so beautiful
though so much beauty on such a tiny skull look a little coconut head she'd
look she'd look good
carved in a gift shop but but but very energetic oh yeah absolutely yeah she
she you know her next
life she should come back as a monkey energetic in a way that perhaps should be
controlled uh yeah maybe
so maybe so yeah uh let's talk about your show for a second it begins in october
october 17th oh we're
calling it octol bear october oh perfect thank you very much and and the type
of thing you'll be doing
on the show um changing the world you know wow if that's what that's what
evidently i'm being asked to
the people are clamoring for world change for me i've been on the daily show
for years but um how
long do you think it'll take you to change the world there uh i think we have
an eight week initial
commitment two months ought to do it yeah by christmas i think so the colbert
rapport debuts october 17th
comedy central great pleasure meeting you steven oh thank you thank you very
much for being here
