You know, like everybody else, I've had a year to think about what this day
would be like,
and if you have a television show, you have to consider, well, what are you
going to do on your
television show? And it's a very difficult decision. It's hard to know exactly
what the
right thing might be to do on this night. So forgive me if I'm about to drag
you through
something maybe you feel like you've been through enough already today. I
understand it if that's
the case, but I hope it's not. Each night for the last nine years, we've done
this show inside the
Ed Sullivan Theater, and I've mentioned this before, here in New York City, the
Ed Sullivan Theater is
located at the intersection of 53rd and Broadway, the corner of 53rd and
Broadway. Now, as we know,
it was one year ago today, five miles south, essentially where Broadway begins,
our city was
attacked. And I think we had a hunch of it then. Certainly we were attacked,
and certainly we're
positive about this now. Attacked, but not defeated. And witnessing everything
that's transpired in New
York in the past year, it's difficult not to be very, very proud of this city.
And people come up to
me when I'm out of town and they say, are things the same in New York City now?
Are they ever going to be
the same in New York City? And I think they are. I think they're getting very
close to the way they
used to be in New York City. I was walking to work a couple of weeks ago, and a
guy is in a cab at an
intersection at like 53rd and Broadway. He's got the window rolled down and he
waves. He says, Dave,
Dave, Dave. So, you know, I'm, I'm a man of the people. I go over to the guy
and I said, yeah,
well, what can I do for you? And he says, Dave, both you and your show suck.
Now, you see,
six months ago, it would have been one or the other.
So I really think things are kind of getting back to normal. So we're nearly at
the end of what's
been a long and, and difficult day for, for many people. It's, I'm sure it's a
day many people have
dreaded. Hopefully for others, it's, it's been a lovely and uplifting day. But
what can we do? Well,
all we can do now, all anybody can ever do on this or any other day, we're just
going to take a moment now
and, and remember that day a year ago and think about what happened that day
and say a quiet prayer
for the men, women, and children, our neighbors who died that day.
The category top 10 reasons, New York City is the greatest city in the world.
Yes. New York City is the
greatest city in the world. Here we go. Number 10, on every block, quaint local
stores like
Blockbuster and Starbucks. Number nine, parking spaces. Well, we got almost 20
of them.
Number eight, muggers now accept Easy Pass. Number seven, there's no Frank Sinatra
song, Milwaukee,
Milwaukee. Number six, not uncommon to see a pigeon give someone the finger.
Number five,
the city that never sleeps, which could explain the crankiness. Number four,
on the sidewalks, free gum. Mmm, boy. Number three, where else can you punch a
world series winning
picture? Number two, a dozen rats per person is not just a statistic. It's a
promise.
And the number one reason New York is the greatest city in the world. It's the
home of America's
favorite talk show host, Regis Philbin. There you go.
number four, a dozen rats per person. There you go.
