"Late Show" Celebrates The Hello Deli's Rupert Jee | Letterman

Hi everybody, Dave Letterman. Dave, they call me the breeze, Letterman. How you
doing? Let me tell
you something. We have a kind of a special thing for you today on the YouTube
deal. There was a guy
on the old show named Rupert G. and his friend May G. And they ran the Hello
Deli. And I can
remember talking to, and it was right there, part of the Ed Sullivan Theater,
Multiplex. And I
remember talking to Rupert G years ago about that deli. And it really, it was
about the
size of my right pocket here in my pants. And I said to Rupert, I said, why?
And he said,
well, you know, we looked at this place and we just fell in love with it. And
finally,
I thought of something to say, just like now it took me a second to think of
something to
say. And Rupert, God bless him, became a fixture of the program. Guess what? He
and May G.,
are retiring and moving to the villages where they will open up a branch of the
Rupert G.
Hello Deli. Good luck there, Rupert, with the STDs and everything. But that's
not why he called.
So, Walter Kim and others from the show put together a big Rupert G. Hello and
goodbye and
happy retirement. And they videotaped it. So now we have coverage of that gala,
the Rupert G. retirement gala,
here on the YouTube thing, plus all sorts of excerpts starring Rupert G.
and the Hello Deli from the old show. So that's what we have here. Sit back,
relax, enjoy.
And congratulations, Rupert.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you all for coming out to celebrate our friends Rupert and May and the
Hello Daily.
I would like to introduce Tanya Bracco from The Colbert Show, who has been
amazing.
She's been so generous and so helpful to this whole thing.
So let's give her a big hand.
Hi.
First of all, I am so impressed and so happy that all of your friends came out
to say goodbye.
And I have to say, I so loved the response that you guys all had and rallied.
And I'm like, well, we can't not represent.
And so our show, on behalf of the two Lechos, would like to present you guys
with two parting awards.
One for each of you.
Oh, really?
So, and our friends and props put these together.
So, do you mind both?
Yes.
One second.
So these say it all, which is why I'm not making a big speech.
The first award to Rupert.
It says, goodbye, Hello Deli.
We relished in our time together.
And we miss you already.
Love from the Lechos.
Oh, my God.
I can't believe it.
And, May, thank you.
Because this is what you would make me when I would walk in.
Also, goodbye, Hello Deli.
You are amazing.
And we'll be dearly missed.
From the both of the Lechos.
Thank you for welcoming us when we first got here.
With much ado.
All right, big hand for Tanya.
All right, so, Rupert May generously donated some Hello Deli t-shirts to us
that we are now
going to give away.
And we're going to do a trivia contest.
So, it's a Rupert G.
Hello Deli trivia contest.
And just a few ground rules.
If the first person to answer correctly wins.
If your name is the answer to the question, you are ineligible for that
question.
Also, if your name is the Dons, you're ineligible for all questions.
Where is he?
He's in there.
Dude, you're going to get every question.
Here, just take us your hand.
All right, enjoy.
And now, I'd like to introduce your host for the trivia contest.
You may know him from such memorable TV appearances as Guy Who Gets Hit by a
Cab.
Guy Who Gets Thrown Off a Roof.
And Guy Who Gets Mauled by a Bear.
Say hello to Guy from Nebraska, Chris Chica.
Thank you.
Thank you, everybody.
How's New York tonight, huh?
That's all I got.
You see, all that abuse did was give me gray hair with things.
So, Rupert and May, what an honor to be here tonight and be part of this.
And thank you so much.
I already told May this, but Rupert, I'll mention as well.
When I came out here, I was as green as could be.
The kid from the farm on Nebraska.
And you guys provided this wonderful space to have stuff.
And just a place that was great to be at from morning to noon.
And so, thank you so much for all of that.
Absolutely.
All right, let's get to why we're here.
And it's a little trivia and some t-shirt time.
And so, Rupert, Walter's going to help me judge this a little bit.
But actually, this first question, we need to see, who traveled the farthest to
be here?
We have a London trip.
We've got...
I think Cincinnati.
Okay, we have London, LA.
Cincinnati.
We have...
Matt.
Matt.
Matt.
Mr. Matt Roberts.
Anyone beating London?
Flew across the pond to be here.
Mr. Matt Roberts.
Congratulations.
All right, Rupert, this next trivia question, you are going to have to figure
out the answer
to this one.
And the question is, who spent the most money at the HelloHell?
Oh, wow.
Not a few, but I would have to say, you had farmers.
Yeah.
Matt Roberts.
Yes.
Congratulations, Pat.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
That would match my eyewitness recording as well for that.
All right.
Now it's up for grabs with trivia questions.
We're going to yell it out.
Is that the...
That's why I'm...
So yell it out.
Who can yell the loudest and get it?
T-shirts coming your way.
Again, Walter will be final judge here.
I have nothing to do with any of those choices.
Just reading.
I'm being done.
All right.
Fun with Rupert.
Rupert did fun with Rupert in New York, in Los Angeles, in San Francisco, and
in New Jersey.
And one other place.
I am.
Nick.
Happy New York.
Happy New York.
It was brandy, Florida.
You spent one day down there.
The air conditioner breaks in the Coconut Grove Theater.
And Will Smith needed a bonus trip out of the show, right?
Yes.
All right.
Next question.
Rupert spent a week for the show on an island.
Which island did he spend a week for on the show?
Stamps.
Portia.
Puerto Rico.
Yes.
Do you have fond memories of that trip, Rupert?
Do you want to ride this one?
No.
You went in the next one.
All right.
So can I just mention one?
Yeah.
The reason I remember that is in the production meeting of the Friday show, the
morning of,
I guess it might have been Donick, who was the head writer, and he was
describing what was
going to happen.
And he was like, the final shot is going to be Rupert on a horse, and we're
going to have
fireworks going on behind him.
And I remember Hal didn't even look up and went, oh, great.
Horses love fireworks.
All right.
Another t-shirt ready to be given away.
The next question is this.
The Hello Deli was used as Late Show's green room during one show.
Guests included Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Chris Christopherson, and
Johnny Cash.
What's the name of their country super group?
The Highwaymen.
I think Darren got it.
All right.
Congrats.
Congrats.
All right.
Here we go.
Next question.
In fun with Rupert, originally somebody else was supposed to be going out in
the wig and
glasses.
John Beckerman.
That is correct.
Rob Burnett knows John Beckerman.
He was going to be the one doing that.
That's exactly right.
It's what?
It's fun with Phil.
Fun with Phil was going to be the title of it.
There you go.
I'm learning tonight as well.
Okay.
Rupert's Psychic Sandwich.
You'll remember that one.
What was the name of the psychic that appeared?
Debra Lynn.
Debra Lynn.
Debra Lynn.
It was it.
Exactly.
Debra Lynn.
All right.
Next question.
Which staff member got drunk, threw up on their clothes, and had to buy a Hello
Deli t-shirt
to where to work the next day.
Bob Borden.
Jay Johnson got it with Bob Borden.
Bob, come on up and take a bow.
There it is.
Yes.
So much better than The Gap, Bobby.
Okay.
Next question.
We got more t-shirts ready to give out.
The Hello Deli has sandwiches named after late show staff and crew members,
including the
Letterman, the Schaefer, the Rob Burnett, the Inky, and the Alan Coulter.
Name another staffer that had a sandwich.
Dina Pita for Dina Rizzo.
Lorraine has that.
There was also the Brian Teta.
Oh, oh, you want to give more?
There's still more out there.
I already gave away the Teta, but there's more out there if somebody wants to
guess.
I heard an Agostini back there.
Was that Mike?
Mike McEntee.
Any others that I'm missing, Rupert?
Allison?
The edit room.
Give me names, Ed.
Yeah, yeah.
I don't know.
Oh.
Anyone want to start?
We can guess more.
There was an edit room sandwich.
Was there an edit room sandwich?
There was an edit room sandwich.
Yeah, edit room sandwich.
Walter, edit room sandwich.
Susan Schreier.
Any other ones?
Susan Schreier.
Susan Schreier.
Susan Schreier.
Susan Schreier.
Yes, there was a Susan Schreier.
That's right.
Okay, last question.
Last chance here.
Why did the show stop doing fun with Rupert?
Janice Bonino.
They pulled a knife on him.
I would remember.
And I think the video was destroyed right away, or is it sitting there
someplace?
Yes.
Thanks, everybody.
Great to see everybody.
Rupert and May.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
Thank you, Chris.
So, it looks like we have a few extra shirts to give away, so to help you do
that, please
say hello to the Hello Deli t-shirt hot dog.
Thank you, t-shirt hot dog.
Hey, how about a nice hand for the t-shirt hot dog?
Take a bow.
Take a bow.
All right.
Well, it's going to be hard to top that moving tribute, but we're going to give
it a shot.
We have some folks who want to say a few words to Rupert and May, and I'll just
start by saying,
Rupert and May, thank you for your friendship, your kindness, and, of course,
your chili.
May, thank you for being my surrogate Asian mother without any guilt.
And, Rupert, I'd like to thank you for giving me two great financial tips that
have helped
me and my family, because let me just say, it takes a lot to pay for Nancy's
lifestyle.
Anyway, the two tips, tip number one, buy stock in Apple, and tip number two,
never bet
on the Jets, so thank you for that.
Thank you.
I've always wanted to follow a hot dog.
Hi, my name is Mike Chisholm.
I'm the host of the Letterman Podcast, for those who don't know.
Many of you have been annoyed the hell out of by me over the last year.
Thank you for putting up with that.
I appreciate it.
Rupert and May are actually the only sponsor of the Letterman Podcast, and I
would love to
discuss that with you.
I've had so many people ask me about the terms and how that all works, but as
you know,
of course, I'm prohibited by doing that because of a non-disclosure agreement.
So I can't discuss that.
I shouldn't have tried to go for a joke in here, knowing that I have some of
the funniest
people in the world.
Also, some of the most jaded people in the world.
I shouldn't have tried to do that.
So I'm going to go sentimental instead.
Rupert and May, I love you both very, very much.
I've loved getting to know you as friends over this last year and a half.
I really appreciated that.
Before that, I knew them as most other people knew them.
Tens of thousands, in fact.
Tens of thousands of people would come to New York, and they would come and
want to have
a Letterman experience or a Late Show experience somehow.
And if they got a chance to see the show, that was great.
But the Late Show experiences happened a lot longer than that.
They happened on Saturdays and Sundays.
They happened when the Late Show wasn't taping because people would go and they
would want
to see Rupert.
And I've had so many people reach out to me after they found out that these
people have
sponsored our show.
They said, oh, and they have a story about coming to see you, a story about the
sandwich
you served them and the question they asked.
And here's the thing.
The question is almost the exact same question every single time.
And I just want to know from YouTube, how did you put up with so many people
asking the
same question every time?
And it comes down to this.
There's three words that I have to describe these two.
The first word is kind.
These two are two of the kindest people you'd ever meet.
And I could never imagine a better sidekick for the Late Show than those at the
Hello
Deli.
Sorry, Mujibar and Sarah Jewel.
Sorry about that.
The second is humble.
I look at the notoriety that you guys got over the years and you neve
