our next guest is a dateline correspondent i'm sorry dateline correspondent and
is also
the co-anchor of the fourth hour of today have you ever seen that part of the
show of of course
i'm a big fan of that fourth hour i'm sorry yeah i'm uh is kathy lee yes and hoda
copy that's right
they're charming together that's right ladies gentlemen please welcome hoda
copy how are you
well hello to you how are you welcome to the show thank you thank you very much
for being on the
program now uh explain to me uh the show how long have you and kathy lee been
doing it's the fourth
hour it is the fourth hour we've been together what time are you on 10 to 11 we're
on 10 to 11.
we start drinking immediately at 10 on the button now you're you're being silly
you don't drink no we
do every day every day every single day do you think have you thought about
entering a program
now now uh do you how much do you have to drink just a little we we have a
couple some days a
little more but usually just a little bit of vino just kind of gets the day
going move into distilled
spirits occasionally wow occasionally now do you do you hear from people around
the country who say
ladies you know fine but leave this at home very rarely do we most people you
know what time magazine
dave called us the happy hour of the today show so we figured if time magazine
says it's all right
you've been endorsed sure now uh uh now whose idea wasn't to start drinking it
was kathy lee's was it
well you'd think it was i know it was do you know who who's it was we actually
had chelsea handler on
our show and she had that book hello vodkits me chelsea we wanted to make her
feel good so we brought
her a drink yeah then brooke shield shows up a couple of days later and she
says well you know where's
mine yeah and then after that it became yes you have an open bar we do and and
what percentage of the
time uh are the two of you incoherent i'm incoherent right now still right now
uh well listen
tell us about yourself you've had an association with the today show for quite
a while in various
capacities and how did you get your start you wanted to be a news uh person a
news reporter an anchor
person yeah i i traveled around the country i wanted to be a news reporter i
grew up in dc but my parents
are from egypt hence the weird name yeah okay hoda copy yeah but i'm told as it
unusual as it might be to
our ear in egypt it's a very common name you know what's funny i used to dread
like third grade roll
call i would sit in in my desk and just sweat as they were calling out like
mark kaufman chris kennedy i
was like just skip me and they would come to my name and they would stumble all
over it like hoda
katobe and i just thought you know it was like kids would yell out you know buy
a vowel and all
that kind of stuff about kids you gotta love kids but but what hoda katobe what
is that what you said
i like the hoda katobe though that's you like that better uh i've been called
that yeah but then at
some point you must realize that you're special because you have a special name
yeah well when i did go to
cairo i still remember i was so used to being unique that i sort of started to
like it and i
walked down the streets of cairo and i hear someone yell hoda and i was like
hello and like eight girls
were like hey very common so it's yeah it's like an it's an everyday name now
now i'm familiar with
the name hosney or hosney mubarak yes now is hosney or hosney the the male
counterpart to hoda you
know i don't know i don't think so good question it was an excellent question
it was an excellent
question ask your friend kathy lee that lush um so you wanted to be you
graduate you study journalism
you're ready to go how do you go about getting a job i got in a car with one
resume tape and drove
around to different news directors to try to just sell myself and i went to 27
different news directors
dave in an area regional area southeast i got rejected three times in birmingham
alabama i got
rejected in dothan that map dot town god love it but you know i got rejected
there and i got rejected
through the panhandle and all throughout the southeast and after 27 nose i was
depressed i was bummed out i
was in my car and i'd borrowed it from my mom so she needed it back and i
wanted to go home and i saw a sign
when i was in greenville mississippi a literal sign that said cbs our eye is on
you greenville i went
in to the guy and i said look you know my name's hoda he said come on in hilda
let's look at this tape
who cares right and the guy the guy hired the guy hired me on the spot really i
was dying well now this
is this is a valuable story and a great lesson in life because at the last
minute you're you're thinking
i got to get the car back to mom let me just try once more and you know what
else he did this is
amazing one day i was in the newsroom working on a story about girl scouts who
needed more leaders
or something and he came busting in and he said who's who has a blazer i go
what a jacket who has a
jacket i said well i have one it's on the peg if someone needs it for a stand-up
he goes you need to
anchor the news because ann is out sick i was like oh my god the litmus test
for who anchors the news
is who shows up to work with a blazer i was so glad i brought it so i'm doing
it's my very first time
i've never done it before i look at the teleprompter and it says good evening i'm
hoda cotby and martin
is out sick and i said come on you can do it this is your big break you can do
it so i look at the
prompter and i go good evening i'm ann martin i was like oh my god you know i
just i just and everyone
knew i wasn't it what's the matter with that woman the worst it was the worst
newscast did anyone notice
that well i went because after the newscast was over it got progressively worse
as it went along because i
kept thinking of my first flub i went to the grocery store when it was all over
just to drown my sorrows
and something and this crazy looking woman came up to me with like wacky hair
and a couple teeth and
she goes oh my god i seen you on tv i felt so sorry for you oh oh people say
every night about me i feel so
sorry for dave well it's a delight to finally meet you and does kathy lee what
about those dogs are they
still with us uh chardonnay and stinky or whoever they were i believe they died
oh they're gone yeah
she has she has another dog bambino so and some other ones too and some other
ones some other ones
they're a side show good for you uh nice to meet you and tell kathy and lee i
said hi i will i will
we'll call you from rehab well there you go that's the attitude hodakadvi
