Our first guest stars as Chandler on the program Friends, which is currently
the number one show on television.
That's right.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Matthew Perry.
There you go.
How you doing?
I'm doing fine.
This is, I introduced you to Pam Cox. She's from Oklahoma. They're in town
visiting. She and her husband. Her husband's an attorney.
That's wonderful. Nice to have you here.
Thank you. I'm glad to be here.
Like I'm the host.
How you doing? How's the summer going so far?
The summer's going great. The summer's going great. I mean, you know, we've
talked about, you've talked about how hot it is here.
Yeah. Do you do anything to handle the heat? What did you do?
Well, there wasn't much to do, you know. I mean, as you know, the Museum of Inflatable
Women was closed.
Yeah.
Can't sneak in there.
You can't go there.
And I basically just spent this weekend just sitting in my hotel room watching
reruns The Love Boat.
Ah.
You can do a lot worse, believe me.
No, I know. I know. And I don't know if you're familiar. I saw my favorite one,
though.
Oh, what's that?
Which is kind of exciting. And I'll talk you guys through it, Pam. You're with
me.
I'm with you.
It's the one where a couple, they're in love, and they go onto the boat.
And they've seen it. Guys have obviously seen this one.
They go out onto the boat, and they're in love. And about halfway through the
show, they have some kind of problem.
A mix-up, maybe? A misunderstanding? A tiff?
A tiff, if you will. Some kind of squabble.
And about 15 minutes later, so at this point, I'm very concerned about these
people.
And about 15 minutes later, I believe on the fiesta deck, Meryl Steubing talks
them through it.
Captain Steubing, sure.
Captain Steubing.
Helps them solve the problem.
And by the time they get off the boat, they're in love again.
There you go.
I've said this once before. My favorite all-time episode of The Love Boat.
Maybe you remember this, if you know anything about the show at all.
Pam, perhaps you saw this one yourself.
Tony Danza plays a Japanese guy.
He's Japanese. His parents, his mom and dad, are from Japan.
Tony Danza.
And he's taking the love boat to Tokyo to visit the ancestral home of his
parents.
Nice.
It's very, very stirring. Not to say a little peculiar.
Was Gopher able to help him out at all?
I don't know. I don't know what happened exactly.
Congratulations on the big hit. Is this your first huge television hit?
Yes, definitely. This is the first show that has been watched by anybody other
than immediate family members.
And I was on a show, actually, because the show's been number one.
And I was on a show that was number 100 for a while.
What was that show?
That was called Second Chance.
And, wow, I'm amazed you guys haven't.
And to show you how naive I was back then, it got canceled, and I couldn't
believe it.
I just shocked.
You wrote some letters trying to get it back on the air.
I did, I did.
I think she wrote some episodes.
Well, so now you're completely the other end of the spectrum, and it must be
very, very gratifying.
Yes.
And you're from Canada, I understand.
Yes.
Born in what part of Canada?
I was born in, well, I wasn't born in Canada.
I was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
And then when I was, hey.
And then when I was about three months old, I had decided I'd seen enough and
moved to Canada.
So, but you're not Canadian then, are you?
Well, I'm one of those guys that actually has dual citizenship.
Yeah, but you vote in the United States, you don't participate in anything.
You paid taxes in Canada?
No.
All right, good for you.
And also, you were a nationally ranked tennis player in Canada.
Yes, actually, that was...
We'll pursue that in a second.
We'll pursue it in a moment.
Pam, do you have any questions?
Pam?
Is the monkey going to be back next year?
The monkey, that's the first time I've ever been asked that.
The monkey, I think, will probably make an appearance back.
But we're not sure as of yet.
He's in contractual stuff.
He wants to direct.
And you're talking about something on the show, Pam?
Is that what this is?
And Cindy Lauper and the woman to the right of Matthew Perry
is Pam Cox, our co-host this evening from Oklahoma.
Are you enjoying yourself, Pam?
I am.
And you and Matthew getting along all right?
Yes, we are.
Yeah, that's very nice.
I noticed that you asked him for his autograph.
Yeah, that's nice.
And you're wearing some of Paul's clothing,
so you don't really need his autograph.
And so you're pretty well set for the evening.
Now, Matthew, tell us about your tennis career in Canada.
Well, I was a nationally ranked tennis player in Canada as a junior.
And that's primarily why I moved down to Los Angeles was because...
To pursue your tennis career?
Yeah, I had aspirations.
You were just that good then?
Well, I thought so.
Yeah.
And I quickly realized that being a nationally ranked tennis player in Canada
is much like being a really, really good hockey player in Burbank.
It doesn't mean much in the real world.
Yeah.
So I went down there, and my whole family came out to watch the first kind of
tennis match.
Well, that's great to get that kind of support.
Sure.
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah, and to see, you know, what I've decided to do for my career.
And I got killed.
This guy kicked my butt, this guy.
My whole family kind of put their head down,
and they were hoping that I would have some kind of other career choice.
And it would have been a great story if this guy had gone on to become like
Pete Sampras
or Boris Becker or something.
But the man that killed me was Abe Vigoda.
Abe Vigoda, the actor.
Abe Vigoda, the actor.
You know, I had no idea he played tennis.
No, and the worst thing about it was there was a huge rumor as he was beating
me that he was dead.
Yeah, no.
The last I heard, Abe is alive, and, well, I don't know if he ever did well,
but he's alive at any rate.
Well, he did well on the courts.
And are you seeing your family while you're here in New York City at all?
Well, I got to see my grandfather in Williamstown,
and an interesting thing happened because there's not a whole lot of stuff to
do in Williamstown.
So he was a big track guy.
He loved running track in the 20s.
And so I decided to let's rent a movie one night, and let's rent Chariots of
Fire.
Yeah, perfect.
Exactly.
He's got to love it.
He's got to love it.
And, you know, it's about track people in Britain, and it'll be perfect.
A lot of scenes of guys running and stuff.
Absolutely.
Inspirational music.
Yes, inspirational music.
Exactly.
Me and my grandfather, Al.
And the movie ended, and he turned it off, and he said, Matthew, I just hated
this movie.
Really?
Hated it.
And I said, how could you hate the movie?
Everybody loved this movie.
And he said, well, I just didn't buy the way they were speaking.
And I said, well, what do you mean?
And he said, basically what happens is he has a very firm belief that every
single British
person is making up that accent.
Oh, doesn't believe it at all?
No.
Some kind of trick?
Exactly.
He truly believes that they all got together years ago in an effort to try to
impress people
to speak this way.
Something they decided on after the revolution, kind of just to get under our
skin for the rest
of our days on this planet.
This is what Al Perry believes.
Well, he's a very disturbed man.
Are you back at work now?
Well, yeah.
We start work in about a month.
And right now, I'm writing this movie with a buddy of mine that we're pretty
psyched about
because we get a great idea for it.
And it's about this guy who's a young guy who would be played by me.
Sure.
And he meets this girl who falls immediately head over heels in love with him.
How could she not?
Exactly.
And that girl would be played by Sandra Bullock.
Wow.
This is great.
This could be a blockbuster right here.
I think so.
And well, that's all I have so far.
It sounds like money in the bag.
Thank you.
Nice to meet you.
Congratulations on the success of Friends.
Matthew Perry, ladies and gentlemen.
Thank you.
