My next guest, it's also a pleasure to have her on the show.
If you've read the newspapers in the last few days,
you know that she was a bit more successful
in getting work in Washington recently
than her father has been.
That's an awful thing to say.
Please welcome the newest page at the U.S. Capitol,
Amy Carter.
Hi, Amy, how are you?
Right there, fine.
This must be a very exciting time for you, huh?
You're away from home for the first time, I suppose.
And on your own in Washington, you have an apartment?
I'm staying with my brother.
Staying with your brother, so they're actually looking out for you, huh?
Yeah.
And you're, can we say how old you are?
Is that all right?
Well, I guess so.
Okay, you're 14 years old.
But see, that's pretty exciting.
I mean, you're a couple hundred miles away from home,
and do you happy that you're away from Mom and Dad?
Yeah, I really like them.
Yeah, what's the best part about being out from under their vigil?
Um, I don't know.
I guess it's like having people spend the night and going out.
You're out.
Oh.
All right, everybody.
No, no, no.
You mean like having girlfriends come over?
That's right.
I'll hold it here.
Hold it.
Now, back home, Mom and Dad would not like you to have your friends come over
and stay up all night raising hell, I guess, huh?
Because this must be your first job ever, huh?
Yeah.
And how do you get to be a page for the United States Senate?
You have to write to your senator and ask him.
And what do you do, like your first day was yesterday, right?
No, the day before.
The day before.
What did you do on the first day?
Well, I kind of just learned my way around the Capitol.
And you'll be there all summer long?
Until the end of July.
Yeah.
And pretty good money in this?
Yeah.
Can I ask you what you're making there?
I guess.
I'm not really sure.
You're not really sure what you make?
Is it more than a hundred bucks?
About that.
Yeah.
Is it fun to be back in Washington?
Oh, yeah.
Yeah?
The last time people saw you was, I guess,
when your father lost his bid to be re-elected president.
And you were quite sad, understandably so.
Do you have any odd feelings about that whole thing
now that you've been away from it for a few years?
No.
Not really.
Yeah?
It was.
I wish we were still in the White House.
Rather still be in the big house, huh?
Uh-huh.
Now, when you get older and you have any career plans,
you know what you want to do in the future?
No, I'm not really sure.
Fourteen years old, it's tough to know.
But when you, say when you're, like, in your mid-twenties or so
and you look back on it,
is it going to be hard for you to believe
you were ever actually living in the White House?
Yeah, I think so.
What do you miss most about that?
Um, well, kind of what you said.
I could have people over and my parents would never know we were there.
Uh-huh.
Did, um, did you ever do things in the White House
just for the thrill of getting away with it in the White House?
Um, well, I'm...
Yeah?
What would, uh, without getting really, uh, personal here,
well, they're in Georgia, they can't touch you now.
What, uh...
Um...
What, uh, what's, what's something you may have done
had Mom and Dad found out about it,
you would have been in big trouble?
Um, well...
Um, we carved our initials in a window.
Carved your initials in a window?
Well, on the sill.
On the window sill.
Do you have any, uh...
Oh, if Nancy Reagan hears this, you're in it.
Big trouble.
Um...
Um, how do you feel about the Reagans?
Well, not kind of obvious.
You, you, do you think that they're doing okay, or...?
Um, what do you, what do you, uh, like doing for fun?
You have some free time, I guess you get weekends off and so forth.
What, what is something you enjoy doing?
I go see a lot of movies.
Uh-huh.
And you have, uh, you have old friends in Washington,
or just, you're meeting some new friends?
Yeah.
Both.
Uh, how do people treat you?
Are you just a normal, uh, of course you're never gonna be just Amy Carter,
you're always gonna be the daughter of the president.
Is that a problem?
Not really.
Yeah.
What about the guys that are crawling all over this building,
the Secret Service men?
Um, well, they're watching, and so, yeah, they're great.
Are, how many...
Can you...
No, they aren't.
How many...
They get the, kind of, on your nerves after a while?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Um, and, and, uh, can we say how many you travel with, or is, maybe that's a...
I think two.
Two.
And pretty nice guys?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Uh, if, if you were to go out on a date, would these guys go with you?
They would, like, they stay a way away.
They, they, but they would be in the vicinity, huh?
Right.
Yeah.
Uh, and how much longer will that continue?
Um, until I'm 16.
Yeah.
What is, uh, uh, now, is your home still Plains, Georgia?
Or have, have your parents moved somewhere else?
Plains.
Plains.
What is that like?
I mean, you, you had it with Plains?
You like Plains?
Uh, well, I like, um, there are not very many children.
I mean, not any my age.
Uh, but there's a lot of old friends, I guess.
Yeah, yeah.
It's a tiny town, I guess.
Um, do you, do you see yourself returning there and, and living for the rest of
your life
in Plains?
No.
Yeah.
Um, how's Billy?
He's fine.
Yeah.
Is he, and he's still, he was here a couple of weeks ago.
He's selling mobile homes now.
Oh, I didn't know.
Yeah, he is.
He's, that's, that's what he, that's what he told us anyway.
He's selling, selling mobile homes.
Um, now, um, it, if, when you're at home with your parents, what is the one
thing that
your mom would get you, would ride you pretty hard about?
Is she worse than your dad?
Well, um, dad usually lets mom worry about little things.
Yeah, yeah.
And, and what are some of the little things mom would be worrying about?
Probably my clothes, mostly.
Your clothing.
Uh, what, for example, tonight you look terrific.
You have beautiful hair, and that's a lovely dress.
Now, would mom find this acceptable?
Mom wouldn't find this is a very nice, simple, elegant black dress.
That, well, she thinks black washes me out.
Oh, no.
See, I have to disagree.
It offsets the lovely color of your hair, and you have beautiful blue eyes.
Uh, would it help if I talked to mom?
I don't.
All right.
I, I think, I think we have your mother on the phone here.
Okay.
Um, we're going to pause.
We'll be right back to talk to Mrs. Carter.
We're back with, uh, Amy Carter, and I think your mother is on the line right
there.
And, uh, we'll just, uh, wait a couple of seconds.
This is not like calling the next-door neighbors, by the way.
This is, uh, this is your big-time heavyweight phone call.
Now, your dad, I gotta wait for a second to see if, uh, they'll accept the
charges.
Now, um, oh, no, we're joking here.
Now, your, your dad has, uh, just finished up his new book, huh?
Uh-huh.
And have you read any of the book?
Parts of it.
What is the name of the book?
Um, I think, I'm not sure.
Not sure.
Keeping Faith.
Keeping Faith.
And, uh, were you impressed with it?
Did you like it?
The parts that I've heard.
Yeah.
I think they're good.
Is this a complete compilation of his, uh, years in office?
Yeah.
Another matter?
She's quite a fisherman also, huh?
Mm-hmm.
You ever go fishing?
I don't like it.
Don't like it?
No.
Uh, this, this would be your mother, I guess, here on the phone.
Is this correct?
I engage this button.
We're gonna talk to Mom.
When's the last time you saw her?
Um, before I left.
I guess it would be last week.
Last week, by the way.
Hello, Mrs. Carter?
Yes.
Uh, uh, my name is David Letterman.
I'm a friend of Amy's.
How are you?
Hello, David.
Is Amy with you?
Amy is seated right here, and...
Well, I'm glad she got to meet you.
I guess you know by now that she's your number one fan.
Amy is, uh, she couldn't be a nicer human being, and we were just, uh, sitting
here talking
about things, and, and, uh, first of all, how, how are things in Georgia?
They're fine.
Uh-huh.
And it's kind of, it's lonesome with Amy going.
It's different.
Tell her.
Yeah, she, well, she just heard what you said.
We're getting along fine.
Uh, and then we, we, uh, started talking about her, her clothing, and so on,
and so forth,
and, uh, she mentioned, uh, she, uh, tonight she's wearing a, uh, a lovely
black dress.
A black dress?
Yes.
Amy Carlos.
Well, I told her to buy a dress, a black, a dress, but I didn't even think
about black.
Yeah, what, uh...
How does it look?
It looks beautiful.
She, she...
Does it look too old?
Oh, no.
We have a picture of her right now, and she looks stunning.
Uh, well, well, Amy and I argue about clothes often.
Uh-huh.
But she's usually right.
Uh-huh.
And, uh, I trust the judgment, but I didn't think about black.
Um, what, what would you rather see her in besides black?
Well, when I talked to her about buying a dress, I told her that I, that I
liked the white one
that we had at home.
Uh-huh.
Well, she, um, she left it at home.
Let me, let me ask you something.
Uh, uh, you know anything about a windowsill in the White House?
Um...
A windowsill that ain't that used to, to lie down in?
Uh, yeah, yeah.
The window open?
Uh...
And I always thought she was going to fall out?
Yeah, she, um, uh, you may be getting a bill as, uh...
Not for a windowsill.
Well, she did a, she and some, was it you and some friends?
Yeah.
Yeah, she and some friends did a little artwork on the windowsill there.
Oh, I didn't know about that.
Yeah.
Uh, this is, this is a pleasure, uh, getting to talk to you, and, uh, so things
for you
and your family are good, huh?
They're fine.
And, uh, I, I don't, uh, mean to, uh, uh, be presumptuous, but is, uh, is, uh,
Mr., uh, is the Mr., uh, what do you call him?
Mr. President?
Oh, sure.
Is, uh, Mr.
Is, uh, uh, uh, I'll get this.
Is President, uh, Carter there in the House now?
No, he's not here.
I see.
Uh, and he's, his book is coming out soon?
It is.
He's finished writing it, and, uh, I think it's gonna be a good book.
Yeah.
And, uh, Amy said that, uh, she was impressed with what she had read of it.
Uh-huh.
And, uh, so what are you, what are you doing for leisure activities now that,
uh, Amy is
out of the house, and you're in planes there, and so forth?
Well, Jimmy's working in his wood shop.
We're building a mountain cabin, and he's making the furniture for it.
Oh, yeah.
And, um, and still, um, putting some finishing touches on his book.
Uh-huh.
And I'm writing a book.
Uh-huh.
What is the nature?
And I work on mine all the time.
What kind of book are you writing?
It's an autobiography.
Uh-huh.
Well, and, uh, how soon will that be, uh, on the shelves as they say?
No, but I'll ever get it finished.
I've decided I have had a very long life.
I can't get to the end of it.
But I'll have it finished maybe by the end of the summer.
Uh-huh.
Well, I want to, I want to thank you for taking time to talk with me here on
our television program.
Would you like to speak with Amy?
She's seated right here.
Yes, I'd like to.
Okay.
Your mother would like to speak to you.
Hello?
Amy?
Uh-huh.
How are you?
Fine.
How's your dress?
Oh, it's great.
It's all right?
Yeah.
Good.
Well, I can't wait to see it.
Okay.
I hope I like black.
Okay.
Okay.
Be sweet.
Don't listen to what he says about the window.
Thank you very much, Mrs. Parker.
You're welcome.
I'm talking to you.
She seemed like a very nice woman.
Very nice woman.
Now, uh, refresh my memory.
You have some brothers and sisters, right?
Right.
How many of each?
Three, well, just three brothers.
Mm-hmm.
And two sister-in-laws.
These are people all older than you?
Yeah.
So you really are the kid of the family?
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, that's terrific.
Uh, good luck to you this summer.
And, uh, when, anytime you want to come back on this show, you're more than
welcome.
It was a pleasure meeting you.
Amy Carter, ladies and gentlemen.
Amy!
We're right there.
Uh, we're going to a commercial.
We'll be right now.
Thank you.
Thank you.
