Hi, I'm Barbara, and welcome to the Barbara Gay's Holiday Show.
Paul, of course, Dave, and our special guest, Darlene Love.
Oh, Darlene, so nice to see you. Welcome back.
Nice to see you.
Good to see you. Wow, very nice.
Well, thank you very much.
I had no idea when I accepted the booking that it would be the holiday show,
but I couldn't be happier to be here.
How have you been?
I've been good.
You know, we all have not been together for nine years.
The last time we were together was December, 2014.
Wow, is that a fact?
Yep.
Now, this is interesting, perhaps, to me, Paul would know this.
How many years did you join us for the holiday show when we had a show?
28 years.
You're kidding me.
28 years.
Seriously.
28 years consecutively.
Well, we were talking about when we first did, it was only four musicians, no
singers,
and we did Christmas Baby with the band and with Paul.
That was it.
Now, I was talking with people about this, and this has your signature all over
it,
and you were at the tree lighting.
Yes.
So, was that a first time at the tree lighting for the song?
Do you know they wouldn't hire me for that?
What?
Isn't that crazy?
That's the same thing Sharon said.
In other words, you just went by, and you really should have been there every
single year.
They did the song without you at the tree lighting?
They had guests that came on that sung it.
That's bullshit.
I know.
And I hope I haven't ruined anyone's holiday.
No, because that's exactly what Cher said, but I'll let you say that.
How was it?
Did you enjoy it?
It was unbelievable.
Right.
Especially with us two together, because I have a life with Cher.
The first time we recorded Christmas Baby Please Come Home in California, she
was singing the background on that record.
Is that a fact?
Yes.
Paul, you must have known that.
Yes.
Of course I did, yes.
It's rock and roll history.
It's another circle.
I was talking with my husband about it.
It's like, with you guys, it's a complete circle.
With Cher, it's a complete circle.
Now, when you say your husband, I'm just trying to put two and two together
here.
You're married to Mike Love?
No, that's my love.
That's my name.
Oh, yeah, I'm sorry.
You married Robert Evans for a certain period of time.
Part of the tradition of the holidays, every year has a special Christmastime
impression that he does.
Paul?
I can, yes.
I'd be thrilled to do it again, because I never forgot the Sonny and Cher
Christmas special from the early 70s, I guess.
And their guest was William Conrad, and the actor had a show called Cannon.
He laughs every day.
And he was, ho, ho.
And they sang a big, long Christmas, Bentley Cannon, and sing, we will show you
a Merry Christmas, ho, ho, ho.
And everybody laughing, and then, you know, it came time for Cher to get
serious, and the lights came down,
and the piano started to play the arpeggio, do, do, do, do, do, do, do, do.
And she was wearing a Victorian overcoat, her hands in a muff,
and, um, and this one's got a laugh every year.
No one's, no one's ever sure why.
And really, I, yes, I was not looking for a laugh there.
But this is how she sang with the beautiful piano accompaniment,
and the, the kids saw the dancers at her feet, and she sang the beautiful hymn,
and it sounded like this.
Do, do, do, do, do, do, do.
Oh, holy night.
Yeah, so bright, it's shiny, oh.
And I went on.
Yeah.
Does that sound like her at all, Darlene?
Yes.
She had her own style.
Thank you.
Yeah.
Thank you for remembering, and thank you for asking.
Well, thank you, Paul.
I hate all novelty holiday songs.
I hate them.
The only one I love is Christmas Baby, Please Come Home.
It's the only one, yeah.
It's, the lyrics are lovely, and the melody is just, it consumes one.
And, and to hear you singing it.
And by the way, Paul, each, each Christmas made it to be more of a spectacle.
Yes.
And it was delightful.
And bigger and bigger and bigger.
Often, musicians in the band would appear from the sky area.
Oh, yeah.
You dropped out.
Trumpet player.
Yeah.
I mean, the saxophone.
That classic saxophone.
And then at the end of the, speaking of litigation, I can't tell you the amount
of lawsuits from
audience members who had inhaled the styrofoam snow.
Wow.
They had aspirated it, and it required lung pulmonary surgery.
Right.
David, the last time I saw you, it was at Little Kids Rock.
And I said, David, I want you to know, you are the reason that my career took
off.
Because I really wasn't working that much.
I was really trying to get this solo career going.
And by the fact that I came on your show every year, it just, I got more work.
Yeah.
So, I have to thank you.
I'll thank you again.
What do you think?
And many of your top stars today have the same story.
I think it proves that if you hit people over the head time and time and time.
No, no, no, no.
Thank you again for your time and your generosity over the years.
It was always really, it became more than the event itself.
You know, it was meaningful and emotional.
And gosh, it's fun to see you again.
Absolutely.
You also.
So, let's do it.
Okay.
We've got to cut away.
We've got to make some money for the network.
Yeah.
I believe this is going to be delightful.
I'm certain it's going to be delightful.
I'm so happy that after a bit of an interruption of doing it with us, you're
going to do it here with Paul and myself and Barbara and everybody else who has
joined us.
And I won't say this will be my favorite, but I'm pretty sure it will be close.
Yes.
God bless you.
God bless you.
I too.
Merry Christmas, everybody.
Christmas, the snow's coming down.
Christmas, I'm fighting it all.
Christmas, I'm fighting it all.
Christmas, Christmas, baby, please come on.
Christmas, the church left in town.
Christmas, I'm ringing the song.
Christmas, but I have these sounds.
Christmas, baby, please come on.
They're singing deck the hall.
But it's not like Christmas at all.
I remember when you were here and all the fun we had last year.
Christmas, Christmas, Christmas.
Pretty lights on the tree.
Christmas, Christmas, I'm watching them shine.
Christmas, you should be here with me.
Christmas, baby, please come on.
I'm dancing in deck the hall.
But it's not like Christmas at all.
Because I remember when you were here and all the fun we had last year.
Christmas, Christmas, I'm coming back this year.
Christmas, all this Christmas day.
I need you, I need you.
Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas.
Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah!
Okay.
Oh, my goodness.
Whoa!
Yeah!
Whoa!
Very, very strong.
Thank you, everybody.
It's Christmas.
Oh, my goodness.
Thank you, guys.
It's like being at home again.
Absolutely.
And what we used to do on the old broadcast, right now, I'd come in and do this,
and then
you'd add a little more into the break.
Yes, here we go.
Nice going, everybody.
Oh, Christmas.
Come on, oh, Christmas.
Baby, baby, baby.
Oh, Christmas.
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Christmas.
Oh, yes.
Oh, yes.
Oh, yes.
Oh, yes.
Oh, yes.
Oh, yes.
Oh, yes.
Yeah.
Good night, everybody.
This has been a World Wide Pants production.
Oh, yes.
Oh, yes.
Oh, yes.
Oh, yes.
I'm watching it for Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas. The church is
in town, Christmas, I'm bringing the song, Christmas, all our happy songs,
Christmas, baby please come.
We're busy in Jack, but it's not like Christmas anymore, cause I remember when
you were here, and all the love we had with you.
Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas, Christmas.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
