Good evening.
I'm Dave Letterman.
You know, last night, after months of debate and controversy, a special
television program
aired in prime time, the repercussions of which we're only starting to feel now.
Here at Late Night, we take seriously our responsibility as broadcasters and
have assembled
a panel to discuss some of the issues raised by this unsettling drama.
I'm speaking, of course, of the world premiere TV movie, "The Facts of Life:
Down Under."
With us tonight is Late Night segment producer Robert Morton.
Morty, as simply as possible, what happens in the story here?
Well, David, "The Facts of Life: Girls" find love and laughs on a visit to
Australia,
much in the manner of, say, family ties in London or any of the love boat cruises.
Yeah, well, that's good, Morty. But what exactly is it?
Is it fact? Is it fiction? Is it fantasy? Is it propaganda?
I would say fiction, Dave. Blair, Joe, Tootie, and Natalie, these are
characters.
However, there is a continent called Australia.
Right, right. Well, I think we can all agree on that, certainly.
Dave, I think we're ignoring a far more fundamental question.
NBC, in its promotional material, is referring to "The Facts of Life: Down
Under" as a movie.
Isn't it, in fact, a movie-length TV show?
Any thoughts on that, Iggy?
Well, I think Gerard's being a bit dogmatic.
I mean, what about "McHale's Navy Joins the Air Force"?
There was "Batman"...
Right. "Monster Go Home"?
"Monster Go Home", exactly.
Yes, but those were made specifically for theatrical release.
He had to go to the movies to see them.
Yeah. Okay, everybody, settle down now.
I think you can see why this program has provoked such a storm of emotion on
all sides.
Now, Mary Lou, what did you make of the story, particularly the subplot
involving the jewel themes?
Well, actually, Dave, I didn't see it.
I'm at this, you know, I'm in this Broadway show at the Barrymore Theater,
Social Security.
It's a modern comedy. Sorry I missed it.
Well, that's all right. We're certainly glad you could join us anyway.
We wanted at least one fabulous babe on the panel.
Morty, Gerard, Mary Lou, Iggy, you know, I think we've only scratched the
surface on the
Facts of Life Down Under Problem, but at least we've recognized the questions
involved here,
and more importantly, we've killed a couple of minutes of airtime.
Thank you all.
You're welcome.
Our next guest was on the show over four years ago, and I have not since met
anyone else with
the first name Iggy or the last name Pop. He is currently on tour with The Pretenders,
and he can also be seen in the motion picture The Color of Money. This is his
latest album,
right here. Blah, blah, blah. Big hit for him on this album.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Iggy Pop. Iggy.
I'm gonna be a wild one, wild one, wild one.
Ooh, yeah, I'm a wild one.
Gonna break it loose, gonna keep it moving wild, keep it soon, baby. I'm a real
wild child.
Ooh, yeah, I'm a wild one.
Ooh, yeah, I'm a wild one.
Gonna break it loose, gonna keep it moving wild, keep it soon, baby. I'm a real

I'm gonna beat all the fools, gonna have ourself a ball.
Tell my friends, gonna tell them all that I'm a wild one.
Ooh, yeah, I'm gonna beat all the fools, gonna have ourself a ball.

Everything seems hazy, I'm a wild one.

Oh, yeah, I'm a real wild one.
Thank you very much.
Uh, Iggy Pop, geez, nice job.
Thank you.
It was like a lot of fun.
Yeah, it was.
Yeah, you got yourself a big hit here, don't you?
It's doing all right.
You were here four years ago.
We were talking about your book at the time, right?
Yeah, and my golf game.
Yeah, your golf and you were raised in a mobile home or something?
That's right.
Yeah, I remember all of that.
Nice to have you back.
Same here.
And you're now on tour?
I am, yeah.
In the middle of the tour?
Yeah, we were in Denver last night and Phoenix tomorrow night.
Having a good time?
Great time.
Now, do people in this context throw stuff at you on stage or not?
Very seldom lately.
I got an orange the first night out, but it was a fluke.
There hasn't been anything since then.
So, I'm really happy.
You sound almost disappointed that it was.
No, no, I'm not.
You don't want to encourage that.
I'm really tired of it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Well, things are going terrific for you.
And are you still writing songs, 25 words or less?
I try, yeah.
Now, where did that come from?
That's the Soupy sales adage.
And he used to, when he had his show Lunchtime with Soupy in Detroit, I was
about five or
six.
And he'd say, "Now, you write into Soupy, but be sure to make those cards and
letters
25 words or less."
And it just sort of stuck in my brain.
Seems to be working pretty well.
Iggy, you sound great.
Let me do a commercial.
We'll be right back.
Okay.
Thank you, Jimmy.
Iggy, nice to have you here.
And you sounded great with the gentleman in the band.
Good luck on the tour.
Thank you.
Jack Elam and Mary Lou Henner.
Tomorrow on this program, folks, Willie Nelson and George Carlin.
Have a good night.
Thank you for joining us.
Good night.
