ladies and gentlemen our next guest a talented actress in a new film uh which
happened uh she
co-wrote can you imagine actually acting in a film that she co-wrote how do you
do that i don't
know we'll find out it's entitled francis ha currently in theaters here's the
delightful
greta gerwig how you doing i'm really i'm glad to be back i was here before
nice to see you i'm so
excited to say that a long time since you were here it's been like a year and a
half yeah because
you've been uh probably working and doing stuff like that and so have you yeah
so now have you written films before well i've i've co-written some stuff
before but this is
really like the first one i feel like is my writing in that way this was your
an idea from you well it
was a joint idea but it's very scripted there's no improv so it's really like
by the letter it's the
script and that makes me feel like ownership right and when you're writing
something like this how do
you know uh not what to include but what to take out after you're done writing
how do you know to look
back and say oh i don't think that goes there it's really hard i didn't i didn't
have as much
experience with it and noah bambach who i co-wrote the script with he he
directed it and he told me
what to cut out yeah that's good he would say we need to cut this i think that's
the value of a
collaboration don't you yeah that's it's what's good now does this is there
some of your life in this
movie i mean when you were a young kid what what were you like like in high
school what were you
like um in high school i was like i was a really aggressive theater nerd that
also i was also a
fencer i did a lot of weird stuff sacramento i'm from sacramento yeah i was um
i was i was in early
high school i was like a competitive fencer um but then i discovered musical
theater which was so much
first of all how did you discover i understand the musical theater but what led
you to fencing why
was that well i was a i was a ballet dancer and then i got my body changed and
i wasn't right to be a
ballet dancer anymore as most women are not right to be ballet dancers and my
mom signed me up for fencing
and i loved it so much because i had an image of myself taking off my mask and
there would be like
hair and i'd be like sexy and the truth is is just it was really sweaty and
really hot and your hair
hair is like matted to your face and it also makes one side of your body very
large like i had a really
big arm and a really big leg and i was trying to get i didn't i never realized
yeah well because
you're always on one side and lunging so um as soon as i like couldn't fit into
a pair of jeans
because one leg was enormous i decided here's your movie right there the girl
with the giant leg
all i all i know about fencing is it's incredibly physically demanding it's a
lot of work isn't it
it is it's very i mean i didn't have the best technique but i was i was very
aggressive and i screamed a lot and
that really freaked everyone out and then like on the off times i would always
wear hawaiian shirts
so everyone's like she's just crazy stay away but you did pretty well as a fencer
didn't you yeah i was
um i was i was ranked nationally and i was also i was like third in california
i was pretty good
wow yeah i feel embarrassed because california is nothing if not a hotbed of fencing
those people
are crazy yeah i know they love it but now what about this what if you had been
on this show because
of your fencing what if you could just come back from the olympics as a gold
medal fencer i know this
would be different then i should have something to show you look at your giant
leg
and my medal and you're of course your medals right well this is great yeah so
so you're actually
multifaceted as a human well well i applaud that thank you yeah now we want to
we want people to see
a bit of this film magretta what is it going to be well i play this character
francis who's a dancer
living in new york but she's struggling and things aren't going very well and i
think she's talking
to her roommate in this clip and is this is again is this uh somehow there's a
two-way mirror into
your life a little bit here or not um there are things in my life from it but
it's a totally fictional
character fictional world but i live in new york so is this well there you go
you have geographically
have that in common is this going to be a a good clip it's very good because i'll
tell you a lot
of times people come on here and the the idea of the clip is to entice folks to
go see the movie
and the the clips stink my hand to god and we sit there and afterwards we said
what the hell was
that who would pay money to go see that like you and biff yeah everybody we all
talk i mean the
audiences that's all they talk about on the way home that's what i worry about
in every interaction
i'm ever in in life yeah well i'm trying to spare you and they're like you this
is a good
clip what happens it's a good clip and something because i've seen the film oh
yeah well what what
will it be just tell me what it is within the clip well okay so she's talking
to her roommate
she's wondering because a girl just told her she looks old and she's wondering
if that's true
i mean am i supposed to am i supposed to keep talking about this clip there's
no point in showing it
now really oh no oh no did i ruin it i don't know is this your first movie what
no i i mean i'm i've
i've i've done this before yeah okay i'm just i just i'm worried about you i
want people when this clip
is done i want them on their feet applauding okay will that happen that's i
hope so that's up to them
but yeah have you been on other shows showing this clip no this is the first
show on this i'm glad
you're here okay oh now here this this movie this movie is black and white oh
it's in black and white
yes now that brings up a point production-wise more expensive less expensive
than black and white
well it we didn't do it as a monetary thing editorial choice it was a choice
yeah we didn't say like well
this will be a way to keep the budget low it was a aesthetic choice it's it's
beautiful and i would
guess today it's probably more difficult to shoot something in black and white
than it might be in
color it's harder to distribute it that's for sure because of the weight um
there's a movie because there's this thing that they're america people are like
america doesn't
like black and white big bright easy to identify colors but i i feel like you
know it's in the grand
tradition i loved it in the first time i loved it that crisp black and white
high contrast a lot of
shadows i love it you're preaching to the choir here i didn't know yeah yeah
well this show what would
this show look like in black and white probably more profound let's see
really turn on the black and white thing looks about the same so far it looks
about the same
wow this is great yeah why can't we do this every night i don't know it feels
deeper yeah all right so
now let's see uh let's see how that clip is it's called francis ha currently in
theaters
do i look old to you no yes how old older than i am older than 27 no 27 is old
though
so we'll be right back to the squadron thank you so much thank you so much
thank you guys good luck
you
you
