Our first guest is an Academy Award-winning actress starring in a new
television series
entitled Extant. It premieres Wednesday, Wednesday at 9 p.m. right here on CBS.
Ladies and gentlemen,
please welcome the always lovely Halle Berry. You look lovely. Halle Berry,
ladies and gentlemen.
How you doing? Fantastic. How's your summer going?
Too fast. Are you working this summer or are you not working this summer? When
did you do the show?
It begins Wednesday, but when did you actually do it? Are you still doing it? I'm
still doing it.
So you're really kind of busy for the summer. Typically, you and the kids and
the family,
what would a summer be like for you guys? Do you travel? Do you stay home? Camp?
Do the kids go to camp?
We would be traveling. We would probably be going to Paris. That's where my
husband's from.
That's going to be our go-to. That sounds like a lot of fun.
Do the kids realize how great it is to be in Paris?
Not yet.
But they know Mom is real happy when we're there.
Parlez-vous Francais? Parlez-vous Francais?
Tell me everything I need to know about this program. Extant?
Extant. Extant. What does that mean exactly and how does it apply to the show?
Extant means to be in existence. And that's the title of our show because it's
all about fighting to survive.
Who will survive? Will human beings survive? Will AI robots take over and will
they be the primary survivor?
Will aliens coexist with humans? Will they survive? It's all about who will
survive.
Our show is set 35 years in the history. Now this is quite thought provoking.
35 years from what it is now. So that would be, I don't know, what would the
year be? 35 years from now is what?
35-35. Well, no, 35-65. Around that area.
Sure. I think this, tell me what you think and then I'll tell you what I think.
Tell you what I think about what? About the show, the premise of the show and
artificial intelligence and what life might be like and stuff.
If I think it will be here or not? Yeah.
Probably in some form. I'm one of those that believes in, I don't believe that
we are the only species in existence.
Really? I don't think so.
In existence or existence in our galaxy, in our solar system, in the universe
you think there's other things?
Yes, I do.
Like in what form? There's no way to know, is there?
No, no way to know. But my ego doesn't tell me that we're the only ones who
have survived.
I think it might take us 20 years to get to those other life forms, but I think
they're out there.
You know, there's the ongoing search for extraterrestrial intelligence, SETI.
Nothing.
They've uncovered nothing.
But it doesn't mean it's not there.
It doesn't mean it's not there, but I'm just saying.
It's because they haven't found it, Dave.
I know, but can you imagine how frustrating it is coming in every day?
Now, I saw the show, and it's very provocative.
And can I tell people what I know about the show?
Sure.
You're an astronaut on the show, and also, can I say the other part?
Huh?
If you know it.
Yeah.
You're pregnant.
Can I say that?
Yes.
Yeah.
But you've been in space for over a year.
Right.
Right.
So, hmm, hmm.
Well, you know.
That's a good place to go have an affair, don't you think?
Well, I mean, but first of all, how do you sell this to your husband in the
show, the TV show?
He's okay with that.
Well, now, wait a minute.
You weren't pregnant when you launched.
Well, he's as curious as everybody else is about.
Curious.
I bet he's curious.
Yeah.
That'll get your curiosity working, won't it?
Well, the big question is, what is this child going to be like?
You know, that's the question I'm getting asked most often.
But in the show, I mean, you know, because you're doing the show, how it is you're
pregnant.
You know that, right?
I do.
But you can't tell us, can you?
I cannot.
You have to watch for about 12 shows.
And it could be an alien.
Could be an alien.
Could be exactly what you're talking about.
It could be an alien.
Could be.
Could be a stowaway.
Not likely, but could be.
A guy hiding on the ship.
Not likely, but could be.
I'm just here to fix wiring.
How did you get here?
Could be the pool man.
Could be the pool man.
Oh, my God.
Well, it's sort of exciting, isn't it?
It's fun to think about.
It's really exciting.
Yeah.
It's really exciting.
And in terms of artificial intelligence, are we making vast leaps in terms of
artificial intelligence or not?
I think so.
And our show definitely describes a time in a world where we will make vast leaps,
where these AIs will be almost as human-like as we are.
But the question our show poses is, can you teach a machine to love?
Can you teach a machine to be human?
And how does that happen?
Because already computers have been proven to kind of program themselves
sometimes.
And so if AIs start programming themselves, how far can they go?
And will they ultimately surpass our level of intelligence?
It's scary, isn't it?
It is scary, but it's also exciting at the same time.
Was Steven Spielberg involved in this production at all?
Did he have something to do with the show?
Yeah.
What does he do with the show?
He's our executive producer.
Well, there you go.
You're in good hands.
Very good hands.
Yeah.
Nobody knows this genre, I think, better than Steven Spielberg.
Yeah.
And so far, you're enjoying it.
Is it a lot of fun?
It is.
It's a lot of work.
I had no idea what it was to shoot a television series.
And with a newborn baby who doesn't sleep through the night, it's been a...
How old is the newborn?
Nine months.
Oh, you're not getting anything.
So in terms of playing an astronaut, is there any sort of research or
preparation that you
wanted to do or needed to do?
I did.
I did something you might have been interested in.
I went on a zero-G flight.
I've heard about this.
You ever heard about that?
Yeah.
Yeah, I did that.
And how does that work?
It makes these parabolic dives and climbs.
Yeah, and when you're diving down, that's when you are experiencing zero-G.
And you do that about 15 times on this flight.
Fifteen times?
Fifteen times.
And what altitude do you begin the dives, do you know?
20,000 feet.
20,000 feet.
What kind of aircraft?
I don't know the kind of aircraft.
Can't tell you.
That'd be the first thing I'd want to know.
What am I getting on?
A big one.
Yeah.
Okay, so what happens?
And so you make these dives, and when you're in those dives, you then
experience weightlessness.
So you're just flying or floating.
You're just flying.
Is that a delightful sensation?
It's a really delightful sensation.
Everybody cracks up laughing.
Yeah.
To be upside down and not have a head rush is probably an experience that, you
know, you've
never felt before.
And why do they do it 15 times?
So you get your money's worth.
Yeah.
Because you pay a lot to go on this flight.
How many people are in the...
Well, it depends how many sign up for that particular flight.
Our flight had about 15 people.
15 people.
This is what they used to refer to as the vomit comet.
Yes.
And do people vomit on the aircraft?
Almost every single one of us at some point do.
And one poor guy, the first time down, got sick.
And he was sick for, you know, 14 dives after that.
He sat strapped in the back of the plane, just five shades of blue.
So they wouldn't let him float around.
He's got a...
He's strapped in the back doing that.
Oh, no. Yeah.
Oh, my God.
If there's anything worse than free floating, it would be strapped in...
And how about you?
How did you do?
I did well until the 15th time.
Yeah.
And do they tell you, by way of preparation, have a light lunch, don't have
lunch, don't
eat breakfast?
What do they tell you?
No, they don't really tell you anything.
That's the problem.
You just sort of show up.
What a lousy job that is, cleaning that up and the thing.
When the thing lands, they've got to have somebody clean that up.
Well, we're doing it in bags.
Would you do this again?
No need to.
I agree with that.
I keep wanting to say it's a film, but it's a television show, and we're lucky
to have
it right here on CBS.
It premieres Wednesday, 9 p.m. extant.
Is that how it is?
Yes, that's right.
Lovely Halle Berry, ladies and gentlemen.
Thank you so very much.
Now, Paul.
Yes, yes.
I forgot we have a thing.
Bring her back out.
Ladies and gentlemen, here she is, Halle Berry.
What do I have here?
We had a couple in the audience who were just getting married, and the guy, I
wouldn't know
if I had any wedding or marriage advice, and of course I do, but I didn't say
anything.
Tell us what this is.
What's this lovely little list here?
Well, this is a list that my daughter made.
One of my co-stars got married on the show, and I thought, well, we could buy
him a vase,
or we could buy him something like that.
But I thought, wouldn't it be better if he got some really good marriage advice?
So I asked my daughter, I said, honey, and she's six.
I said, tell me ten ways a couple can stay married.
Top ten ways to stay married.
Your daughter's name is Nala?
Yep.
Nala.
Okay, and she's six years old.
Top ten ways.
Here we go.
Number ten, have fun and dance.
Have fun and dance.
Number nine, talk a lot.
Talk a lot.
Very important.
Number eight, keep your cars together.
Number seven, always go the same way.
That's why you need to have your cars together.
Number six, be helpful and nice.
That's perfect.
Perfect.
If we could just do that.
Yes.
If we could just do that, that's all you really need in the world.
Number five, keep each other safe.
Very sweet.
Number four, don't fight out loud.
Number three, my personal favorite.
Number three, keep nice to your boyfriend.
But don't be nicer to your boyfriend than you are to your husband.
Number two, stick together like stick yourselves together.
And the number one top ten way to stay married, you need to kiss.
Number three, keep nice to your boyfriend.
