let me tell you something folks here's how this works a night in and night out
here in the ed
sullivan theater how many folks do we have in the audience about 500 people 450
or something like
that yeah in order to make sure we have a great audience every night because of
the weather
because of travel because of scheduling we pass out standby tickets the day of
the show
so if you've written away in the past for a ticket and you get to be here that's
fine but if you don't
somebody who's picked up a standby ticket early in the morning they come in and
they get to see
the show you know it's just the way we do it so because these people usually
are outside of the
ed sullivan theater all day long whether it's raining whether it's snowing
whether it's miserably
miserably hot whether it's freezing cold like it is here in the theater from
time to time
from time to time i feel a responsibility to do something nice for this
wonderful group of people
that each day makes up the standby audience yeah in the past here are some of
the things we've done
for them we've we've taken them to see miss saigon there's the standby audience
and we took them
across the street to uh oh to have dinner that's right we bought everybody in
the standby audience
dinner we sent them to lumberjack camp once one night we even put them all on a
bus and sent them
off to miami beach where one week later they jumped in the ocean
al do me a favor take a shot of the standby audience out there and there they
are ladies and
gentlemen how about a nice hand for tonight's standby audience man that is that
is a pretty good good
looking group of people can you folks hear me how long have you been out there
standing by three days
that's a sad pitiful story tonight tonight ladies and gentlemen i'm going to do
something lovely for
you do you mind coming in here to the ed sullivan theater in an orderly single
file please come in and
behave yourselves here comes the night's standby audience
thank you very much hi how are you nice to see you hello welcome to the show
how do you do thank you
for coming in sir nice to see you nice to have you with us thank you very much
how you doing what
is your name tom coming over here well you folks took your time getting in oh i'm
sorry pleasure to
meet you well you came down the wrong aisle are you sure are you actually with
the standby audience
how many do we have here about a dozen do you folks know each other have you
bonded as a unit
disgusting isn't it and your name again is tom where are you from tom uh uh conover
north carolina
so you're from north carolina all right of course why why not go crazy
i'm going to do something nice for you in the audience tonight i'm going to
send you now
right outside there biff where are you where's our stage manager biff henderson
biff come on out
here he is right here all right that's tom he's from north carolina we're going
to we want to send
you folks out you're going to go to the gap up on 57th street you familiar with
the gap i've heard
of it looks like you've been there already in my hometown we have one yeah good
for you and we're
we're going to get for you folks matching outfits that a lovely idea you just
follow biff he'll take
care of everything there you go enjoy yourselves folks be very careful there
they go bye bye we'll see you later
there they go well there they go
so the next time you see those folks will be trying on lovely outfits at the
gap we took our
standby audience because these people have to wait day and night to get in and
maybe they don't even
get in and i said we got to do something nice for the standby audience and the
second i started talking
about doing something nice for the standby audience you could feel it you could
sense it the audience in
here was very very discouraged
behaving as poor sports not not recognizing of course that being here to see
the show is so much more
exciting so much more fun but you know there for a second it hurt my feelings
because i could feel them
saying oh how come we don't get to go to the gap yeah we have to stay here and
watch tv boy
those guys those guys those guys could use a trip to the gap couldn't they
where are those guys are they upstairs where are they where are they okay come
on you go to the gap
too you need to go where are they come on god
come on get out here nice to see you you're going to the gap son now don't make
trouble we'll find you
don't worry don't worry we'll get a cab or something here here there get in
that cab over there send
these guys to the gap we'll take care of you there they go
you know i'm thinking to myself now in the beginning if we had just sent those
guys
the audience would have been so much happier
and we could have saved ourselves quite a lot of money to help with a standby
audience from now on
are they is anybody there yet oh they're right at the gap well this would be
exciting turn on that
camera let's see the standby audience arriving at the gap more reasons to be
disappointed there they
are shopping mingling there's tom i think tom can you hear me hey how's it
going hey real fine now
tom you're in charge all right i'm in charge all right i want to make sure you
handle everything
as as well as you can and we'll pay for it okay all right the key here is
matching outfits matching up
yeah and and the regular audience hates you people
all things turning kind of ugly ended over a few eight dollar outfits from the
gap all right
now ladies and gentlemen let me remind you of one thing if you do that again
and it lays the show
and we run late that means the standby audience doesn't get their outfits
that's a horrible attitude
ladies and gentlemen here's the standby audience fresh back from the gap here
we go
all this cherry it looks what it what my god are we are we going back to baghdad
is that what's
happening is there is there another desert storm i didn't hear about well you
all geez you all look
like a million bucks god bless you thank you very much there's our matching
outfits for the standby
audience this exquisite international style cuisine now comes with an airplane
united airlines three
class service between lax and jfk reservations are advised oh man ladies and
gentlemen i want to tell
you something it's been quite a night here on the late show earlier we took the
standby audience and
we enlisted them in the marine corps what a night my thanks to mike and the
mechanics diane oh there are
those guys hey guys nice to see you good luck in boot camp
