Hi, I'm Barbara. This is the Barbara Gaines Show, and this is Dave.
Hi, I'm Dave Letterman. Nice to see you. How are you doing? Good to have you
here.
Thanks for coming.
Well, it's always my pleasure to be here. Wow, what a period of excitement we're
in right now, huh?
This is a big time Grammy Super Bowl.
Oh, hey, let me say a couple of things about those Grammys.
Did you hear about the thing with Tracy Chapman? I got a clip of it, and I
watched it.
Tremendous. Tracy Chapman, oh my God, she is so good and so great and so nice
to see her again.
And that song, Fast Car, you know that song, right?
Yes.
And this is the great thing about music.
Immediately when you hear that first refrain, it takes you to that period in
your life when you first heard and enjoyed that music.
And boy, that did it for me.
And then here's something else.
As I'm watching the clips, guess who is standing up there at the Grammy Awards?
Taylor Swift.
And Taylor Swift is standing up there, and she's singing along with the song.
And I thought, I found that so endearing because had it been me, now this is
going to sound ridiculous,
but had it been me, I would have, no one would have let me stand up and sing,
but my instinct would have been to stand up and sing because that moment was
just that moving.
When she sang a stand by me on your show.
Well, that's the other thing.
And I was pleasantly surprised, although I guess not pleasantly surprised.
I didn't realize that that was her last television performance.
Oh, darling, darling, stand by me, oh, stand by me, oh, stand, stand by me.
Now, here's something else.
I can remember the three tenors when they came out, Manny, Moe, and Jack, or
whoever.
That's not your name.
No, but you know what I mean, when I first saw the video of that, the three tenors
singing Nason Dorma.
Oh, I can remember the three tenors singing Nason Dorma, the three tenors
singing Nason Dorma, the three tenors singing Nason Dorma, the three tenors
singing Nason Dorma, the three tenors singing Nason Dorma, the three tenors
singing Nason Dorma.
It was so thrilling, and I used to play that over and over and over again, and
I thought to myself,
I have a sense of true longing here, wishing I had been there, been there to
witness these guys singing Nason Dorma, and I know nothing about opera.
The closest I come to opera is Oprah.
Hey.
So anyway, I had the same kind of tickling feeling when I saw Tracy Chapman.
I wish I could have been there for that live moment.
It was just beautiful.
You know, the only award show I really watched were the Tonys.
You know, my favorite award show was the People's Choice Award, and I loved
everything about it because it was just a fixed job, up and down, owned by Procter
and Gamble.
They owned the whole thing, and here was the deal, if you were nominated for
the People's Choice Award, they would call ahead and say, "Oh, by the way,
Larry, you're the winner of the People's Choice Award."
And you'd think, "Whoa! I'm getting an award!"
Yes! And then the deal is, you've got to show up. If you don't show up to the
People's Choice Award, you're dead to them.
You're just dead to them.
So, one time I had won the People's Choice Award, and it was held on a Monday
night, and you've got to go all the way to California.
And I said to the People's Choice people, I said, "I can't. I'm working. I can't.
Okay. You're dead to us," they said.
And so, I watched the whole show, and then at the very end, as the credits are
rolling, "Winner of the talk show had a good idea. Good night, everybody!"
And I thought, "Wow! What a fixed deal this is." So, the SEC is looking into
that nonsense. There you go. People's Choice Award.
You know what my choice is, people? Not to watch.
Hey!
That's a good one, huh?
Yeah.
That's a good, pretty good bird. Ouch!
Speaking of the Tonys, our friend Nathan Lee is getting a Sondheim Award.
Oh, my God. Good for him. He's tremendous.
We should have him on.
Yes. You know, there was a time when he lived very near the studios here for
the Barbara Gaines Show.
That's right. He moved.
Yeah.
He moved pretty much as soon as we got here.
Hmm. Coincidence? I think not.
A couple of weeks ago, Hal Gurney.
Hal Gurney, our great director. For a long time, Hal Gurney was the man I
wanted to be.
What a guy. What a great director. What a tremendous addition to our early
efforts in TV.
Never be able to repay Hal Gurney for all his friendship and kindness and great
directing.
Guess how old he turned.
He's 107.
Nope. 99.
I mean, good.
Nobody's 99.
Just on January 25th, he turned 99.
This is breathtaking.
That's why I wanted to mention it.
Happy birthday, Hal.
And don't forget to subscribe.
We'll see you next time.
I think you need to up the production because you said it had slipped from the
second year was
fewer than the first year.
I think that's a mistake.
You got to keep this thing in production.
