what kind of luck do you have with policemen policemen yeah uh so far so good
yeah actually
the cops are very nice to me see i have terrible luck with policemen anytime i
get stopped for a
traffic violation even if i'm close or or on the edge i'm going to get the
ticket so this morning
i'm driving to work and uh i see a radar car and i blow by this guy and just
like that you know
you're in big trouble so sure enough about 30 miles later he catches up to me
and pulls me over
and and he says uh you have any idea why i pulled you over and and i learned a
long time ago there's
no point in trying to be cute with these guys they got a job to do so i said of
course you pulled me
over because i was going 75 and he said yeah that's right you were doing 75. he
was so taken aback by
the fact that i just owned up to doing 75 he said well i won't give you a
ticket then i thought that
was pretty nice of the guy now does he ever tune in late at night no he had no
idea who i was if he'd
been watching the show of course i'd have gotten the ticket yes uh and then he
said to me i i said you
know uh it's okay if you want to give me the ticket i said i was doing 75 i
fully expected a ticket
and he said to me don't worry the ocean is full of fish
this was a state i don't know i don't know if it was a state policeman or a
neighborhood guy or uh or
or just a kid in a uniform but probably a marine home on leave having fun
could happen i guess uh okay oh here's viewer mail and look look we don't have
an official blue card
see look the actual viewer mail letters are on substantial cardboard blue cards
this is that means
we answer our voluminous mail from all over the four corners of the globe let's
get right to it
shall we uh dear dave please don't send me one of those sponges i wouldn't know
what to do with it
thank you john savage and i see john has enclosed a photograph of himself and
and john says he wouldn't know what to do with a sponge well john
judging from your picture uh perhaps you might consider washing with it
okay let's move on to letter number two ladies and gentlemen it's this flimsy
one right here
it may not even work all right dear dave while at the library i thought maybe i'll
get the reader's
guide to periodical literature and look up some articles on dave letterman well
dave there have
only been four count them four measly articles written about you in major
legitimate publications
even more distressing is the fact that other celebrities many of whom i would
consider of
lesser importance than yourself had a greater number of articles written about
them and it's
signed best wishes michael metters uh well michael that's uh just not true i've
had several fine
articles written about me in several fine magazines i've even been on the cover
of many many wonderful
publications we have a couple of them here and let me show them to you this one
i'm kind of proud
of this is the cover of the anchorage daily tv news right there
kind of a tom sellick look and uh here i am on the cover of the marvel comic
book the avengers
that's when i was doing stand-in work for john davidson
i'm especially fond of this one this one is uh of course the popular periodical
fort wayne after dark
yeah i didn't think so and of course here is the steep i was on the cover of
that uh this is the
magazine of key lovers
and uh and here i am on the cover of consumer price finder and uh there you go
so you see i've been on the cover of many many magazines it's this lousy paper
is the problem with
that one uh dear dave letter three begins how are you smile guess who oh i see
this is uh oh this
is candy oh no uh this comes from j a jim larchide brookfield wisconsin ladies
and gentlemen i have
to make this announcement periodically when you send in a letter please do not
include food or candy we at
sometimes uh during the uh show have problems with ants so i'm gonna have to
ask you oh no look at this
tommy can you can we get somebody in here to oh see it's happened already well
thank you very much tommy
okay tommy the first row is nodding off that'll be enough
people gasping for wind letter number four dear dave as you know things
literally have been
bustling around nbc because it is college week on the wheel of fortune however
did you know that
your name was the answer for one of the puzzles on today's show you have
finally made the big time
congratulations your number one viewer marty ruggles irving texas well of
course marty we knew all about
that and you're right we were all kind of proud about it in fact we made a tape
recording of that
particular show of wheel of fortune take a look at the excitement here players
we're looking for a
famous late night talk show host he's on nbc at 12 30 a.m mondays through thursdays
here we go should be easy
that's a famous late night talk show host
late night
here on nbc rhymes with betterman
very funny young man
anybody anybody want to buy a vowel
so is it anyone that we were extremely proud when that happened
so uh let's see where are we we're up to number five is it five sure it is uh
dear dave i guess this
clears the air about paul's rock expertise david bliss long beach california
and he's included a
little uh looks like a pamphlet or a flyer for a seminar wednesday january 25th
at 7 pm avalanche
awareness in the mall conference room paul schaefer from the u.s forest service
will be on hand to
discuss the dangers of avalanches and how to detect and avoid them stop by for
this clinic and make your
next winter outing a safe one goodness uh paul i knew you were a versatile
person i had no idea
that there was this other side to you well i i guess it's true i hang with the
forestry department
every now and then i don't know i got a kind of a nutty offbeat approach to my
lectures when i do them
yeah now what what would have uh this discussion about avalanche awareness been
like the avalanche thing
yeah well this is a very very marvelous david yazbek composition uh which i do
in the uh in the lecture
thing it goes something like this avalanche avalanche you cuckoo crazy uh avalanche
that icy bundle could start to crumble and it's hanging right over your head
soon we'll all be
dead hey unless we are particularly careful to avoid making loud noises with
explosives unnecessary
use of crampons or ice axes and any slope comprised of unpacked dry snow steeper
than 25 degrees and
that's how to avoid an avalanche avalanche watch out for mudslides on the way
home thank you very much
i'll be back with uh vincent cavallo the man who sells the match to the star's
home
