You can see our next guest, she plays the part of Mona Loveland, the late-night
disc jockey on the new WKRP in Cincinnati.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome actress and former model, Tawny Katane.
Tawny.
Welcome to the program.
How you doing?
I'm doing really well, thank you.
Good for you.
Hey, people, hey, hey, I don't know.
They're hollering things at you.
Random hooting is broken out here.
I love that.
Welcome to the big program.
Oh, Jay, thank you.
Let me ask you about your name.
Is that your actual name?
Do people say Tawny Katane?
Because it sounds like a show business name.
A stripper from San Francisco.
Or a stripper, yeah.
Actually, when I was seven, I wanted to be different.
My name was Julie, and I told my parents, Julie.
Julie, well, there's nothing wrong with that name.
No, I wish I would have kept it now.
Well, you can get it back.
Can I?
Oh, sure.
Okay.
I don't even think there's paperwork involved.
Okay, so from now on, I'm Julie.
You're Julie.
Okay, and he's Frank.
But as a kid, you selected Tawny.
Yeah, well, my parents told me that if I was a boy, they were going to name me
Tawny.
Tawny.
So I went to school, and I had that in my mind.
And there was a gentleman there, a boy there by the name of Tawny, and I
thought that was
really nice.
They didn't know if there was a boy named Tawny?
Mm-hmm.
I lived in El Cajon at the time.
See, there's a mix-up there.
Some kind of a mix-up, don't you think?
Yeah.
Yeah.
And it's a theme through my life.
Oh, I see.
And what?
Nothing.
Go ahead.
Okay, thanks.
And so we moved about a month later, and when I got to the new school, I told
everybody,
I announced my name was Tawny, and I've been there ever since then.
And your parents let you get away with that dumb stunt?
My parents let me get away with everything.
I bet they did.
That's what I've heard.
Yeah.
Let's talk a little bit about the television program.
How long has this thing been on the air?
This thing has been on the air, well, one year now, but before, I think it was
on about
four or five years.
Now, this is based on the very successful series of a few years ago, WKRP in
Cincinnati.
Well, W.
W, that's right.
Right, right.
And some of the cast members are the same, some are new.
Right.
And everyone thinks that I came on to replace Lonnie Anderson.
Right.
That didn't mean, no.
No.
I mean, no.
I'm Venus Flytrap.
I came on to replace.
And we look just alike.
Exactly.
Yeah.
So you're a new character, an additional character, not a replacement.
Right.
Exactly.
Yeah.
And what kind of things happen there at the WKRP these days?
Well, we get to hang out with Herb Tarlick, which I enjoy very much.
He's the guy who always goes around and tries to hit on everybody all the time
with the
polyester suits.
Right.
And so I get to spend weeks just bending him off.
Yeah.
And playing music, which I enjoy very much.
Now, music is an important part of your life.
You were married for a time to White Snake, right?
Yeah, not the whole band.
But contrary to popular belief.
Now, how long were you married?
I was, well, we were together for four years.
Four years.
Is it difficult to discuss?
Because we don't have to discuss it if you don't want to.
No, it was, it's, yeah.
Yes.
No, it's not difficult.
What would you like to know?
Well, I don't know.
Well, which one of them guys is White Snake?
What was it like to be like a rock and roll, I mean, yeah, I don't want to say
that because
people might think that it sounds demeaning, but it's certainly not.
It was like being a character out of a Jackie Collins novel for a while, you
know?
I mean, all I did was, what are you doing today?
Decorating, you know?
No, no, no, really?
Yes, decorating.
Well, flying on this private jet and going to this.
So it was very exciting.
Yeah, it was.
Part of it was exciting, sure.
It was.
I really liked it at the time.
And how did you handle the adoration heaped on these people when you'd go out
on the road
doing concerts and so forth?
Was that a problem for you?
No, because of the exposure that I had doing the videos, it was wonderful
because the girls
wanted to meet me as much as, well, not as much, but they wanted to meet the
guys.
You were the white snake babe for a while.
Yeah, yeah.
Do you have that on your resume?
Yes, it says, can ski and also white snake babe.
And, wow.
Here, let me show you.
Okay.
How did you, well, tell me about the video thing.
Well, actually, contrary to, well, we had been dating for a while.
We had been dating for about three or four months.
Who are we even talking about?
Dave.
He's the lead singer.
Oh, Dave.
Sorry, I can't call him Dave.
Can't call him Dave.
No, he likes to be called David.
As a matter of fact, David, you have to.
We would go to different concert halls all over the United States and they'd
have like
350-pound guys hanging from the rafters and they'd go, how you doing, Dave?
And I'd have to walk behind him going, don't call him Dave.
Don't call him Dave.
Don't call him.
So, when I watch you sometimes, I wonder if your guests are going to come out
and call
you Dave or David, you know.
I wonder sometimes if my guests are going to come out at all.
And you're going to continue your acting now?
Do you model anymore?
No, you know what?
I never really modeled.
I was always, I was like five.
Too short to model?
Yeah, too short.
You don't seem short here tonight.
Well, thank you.
Yeah.
Thank you.
Let's do a commercial and we'll be right back.
Thank you very much.
It was a pleasure to meet you and continued success there on WKRP.
Come back again.
Thank you.
Thanks, Tony.
My thanks to A Tribe Called Quest and Alan King.
Good night, everybody.
