Our first guest is a very talented, quite appealing young actress, starring in
a new film entitled The Help, and it opens August 10th.
Please welcome the lovely Emma Stone, ladies and gentlemen.
Nice to see you, Emma.
Nice to see you.
You've been here before, haven't you?
I have, one time.
One time? How long ago was that?
It was October 14th last year.
How'd that go?
Well, really, I mean, it was a lot of fun.
Good, I'm glad to hear that.
Yeah.
Now, I've seen you in several movies.
It seems like you're in quite a few movies right now.
Help me out here.
What are you in?
Crazy Stupid Love.
That's a great movie.
Did you like it?
Yeah, I did.
I enjoyed it.
I'm so glad.
That's a great cast, too, by the way, isn't it?
Oh, it's an incredible cast.
It's pretty, that was pretty wild.
Was it fun to make the film?
It really was.
I mean, yeah, it was Steve Carell and Julianne Moore.
And who else?
What else are you in?
The Help.
Oh, The Help.
That's the one coming out.
That's coming out.
August 10th.
Here you are on the cover of this magazine right there.
Entertainment.
There are you and your co-stars in the film, The Help.
And what's the other one that we...
And there was Friends with Benefits.
Friends with Benefits.
It was a little part in place with Benefits.
At the very beginning, with the cameo.
At the very beginning.
Yeah.
That's right.
Yeah.
Well, so it's been a very busy summer for you, hasn't it?
Yeah, it's been kind of a crazy summer.
Yeah, well, thank you very much.
And your voice, I always wonder, is the poor deer getting over a little?
But you have the kind of, you have a deep sort of thing, right?
I mean, I'm not making this up.
You're a little husky.
It's a little husky.
It's true.
It's a little husky.
Yeah, it's a result of six months of 24-hour-a-day colic when I was a baby.
Oh, is that right?
Yeah, it's nodules.
Oh.
I'm damaged.
Oh, no, wait a minute.
So it wasn't caused directly by the colic.
It was because you were always yelling as a baby?
Because I was screaming constantly.
Screaming in discomfort.
Right, in discomfort.
And I think my mom really had a lovely time with that.
Six months, boy.
They say when you get a kid with a colic, I mean, you're right, it's for six
months.
It is lights out, buddy.
Did your son have colic?
No, no.
My wife did.
That's a different story.
So, not really a problem.
You just have a husky voice.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, I lose it all the time.
You lose your voice.
It's kind of a miracle that I have a voice right now.
Just because if I talk more than three days in a row, it's usually gone for
about a week.
Well, this is a horrible thing for a person in your profession.
Yeah, it's horrible.
I mean, in the middle of a film or an audition, have you ever lost your voice?
All the time.
Really?
My audition for Crazy Stupid Love, I had absolutely no voice.
Oh.
None.
And I had to go in for a chemistry test with Ryan, and it was...
What's that?
Is it...
It's like to test.
Because, you know, people can be all right on their own, and then you get them
together.
You've seen this in movies, and it doesn't seem like they're really jiving very
well.
So they do a test for it now.
It's called a chemistry test.
It's called a chemistry test.
I know what you're talking about.
A lot of times, it's just like, oh, please.
But other times, you forget, and because the chemistry is so good.
Right, right.
So hopefully, hopefully the chemistry worked out all right.
How do you think it's going here tonight, chemistry?
Well, it's time to play How's Your Colon.
God, I wish I would stop that.
Now, listen.
That's a beautiful ring, by the way.
Well, thank you.
You can have it if you want it.
Well, I think it would look silly on me.
Thank you.
Anyway, you and Ryan Reynolds?
No, Ryan Gosling.
Gosling.
I don't know what I'm talking about.
They're both Canadian.
You go to the chemistry test.
I go to the chemistry test, and I have absolutely no voice at all.
I don't really, and I walked out thinking that was the worst thing that's ever
happened.
I mean, the entire time, I was very, it's great to meet you.
This is going to be great.
This is going to be fantastic.
And so I left thinking it was going to be terrible, but for some reason, we did
the dirty dancing lift in the room, and maybe that sealed the deal.
I don't know.
That's quite a moment in the film, then, isn't it?
Yeah, that was quite a moment.
Now, I'm, should I be worried about your throat nodules and such?
Sure.
I mean, if you want to be.
I do.
I want to be.
And could they be, is it a thing where, will they be removed?
You don't need them to be removed?
Well, you can have surgery for them, but Julie Andrews, you know, had the
surgery, and she can't really sing much anymore.
Because things can happen.
It can be botched a little bit, and you have to be quiet for a month.
Once you've gotten the surgery, you can't speak for a month, which would be
great for my friends.
You have tremendous.
That's good for me.
Beautiful eyes.
Those are gorgeous.
Those are, it's a blue I've not seen.
And describe that blue.
Well, you've never seen them either, have you?
No, it's just such a clear, light blue.
But it's like the light is emanating from them.
Honestly, can you look at the woman's eyes?
Look at that.
Wow.
Oh, boy.
Yeah, look at that.
Now, tell us about your trip to the White House.
Was it your first visit there?
Mm-hmm.
And it was my first visit to D.C. also.
So it was just, it was a real D.C. experience.
That's lovely.
Yeah, to get your first visit, and you go to the White House.
That doesn't happen to just everybody.
Not to just everybody.
And the purpose was the screening of the help, is that right?
It was, yeah.
Mrs. Obama, the first lady of the United States, had seen it.
And they gave us a call, and they said that they wanted to screen it at the
White House.
And so Octavia Spencer, who's in the movie, and I went to the White House and
met Michelle Obama.
Wow.
That's Octavia.
And you sat there for the screening?
You guys watched it together?
They, Octavia and I both really don't like to watch ourselves very much,
because we get
a little, a little panicky.
Mm-hmm.
And they said...
What is it about that experience that panics you?
Because I would be the same way.
If I had to stare at myself for 90 minutes or two hours, I couldn't take it.
It's too much.
What about it in, and I think other actors have the same, you know, what do you,
what about
it is hard to watch?
It's just, it's kind of, you can't really separate yourself, and then you think,
is that
really what I'm, that's what they went with.
Or, that's what I chose to do there.
Or, that's how that came across.
Right.
Great.
Right.
I know.
It's, it's insecurity, I think, isn't it?
It is, probably, and then also you get aware that, you get afraid that you're
going to be
too aware of yourself in other things.
Well, that's right.
And then every little thing you do is magnified, you know, 20 or 30 times, and
you have to see
it up there, and I understand what you're talking about.
Yeah.
But it's interesting that I think sometimes actors are led to that because of
some insecurities,
and that's how it now manifests itself, even after great success like yours.
You think that they want to do that job because of it?
It's a way of overcoming insecurity and proving to people that, oh, look, I'm
really good at
something.
Yeah.
You know?
Absolutely.
Yeah.
How did the screening go then?
Because you couldn't duck out, I guess.
You couldn't do it.
And I think one of two people in the world, you can't say, exactly.
Yeah.
You can't say no to.
Yeah.
So, um, so we stayed, and Octavia and I were in the front row, just the two of
us, and
everyone was behind us, so we couldn't really go like this or anything.
Yeah.
So, uh, so it was quite an experience.
Yeah.
Now in a function like this, is there alcohol?
No.
No.
No.
Because that would have been a go-to move.
That would have been amazing.
Yeah.
That's too bad.
Maybe for the future.
We can.
Alcohol would be nice, Mrs. Obama.
Well, would it kill you to open up the bar?
Come on.
Come on.
I'm a taxpayer.
And this movie, The Help, from a hugely successful book, 100 Weeks on the New
York Times Best
Seller, and based on the author's experiences or remembrances of her youth
growing up in the
South, is that correct?
In Mississippi, yeah.
Mississippi, yeah.
Yeah, so it's a pretty touching story.
Mm-hmm.
You read the book and thought, yes, I would like, oh, and your mother was a big
fan of
the book.
I'm a huge fan of the book.
Now, there's pressure.
Am I right about that?
There's huge pressure.
I had never been part of a movie that was adapted from a book before, and
usually you
read a script and people ask what movie you're doing, and you have to explain
the whole story,
but you say The Help, and people are like, "Ah!"
Right.
I keep saying it's like Twilight for adults.
Mm-hmm.
So...
For adult women.
This is great because the book, there's great anticipation about the film.
Also, it's great pressure on you because will you fulfill their images as they
read the
book?
Right.
I don't know.
Yeah.
Oh, and how was it received at the White House?
Where was the president, for God's sake?
He was at Camp David.
Mm-hmm.
Are you sure he was at Camp David?
That's what they told me.
Yeah.
Yeah.
All right.
That's fine.
Let's look at a clip here, Emma.
What are we going to see?
Oh, we're going to see a scene where Skeeter, my character, is going on a date
with a guy
named Stuart for the first time, and it's not going so hot.
Mm-hmm.
Okay.
It's from The Help.
Opens August 10th.
Emma Stone, take a look.
It's called The Help.
Opens August 10th.
So, and people will take their books to the movie.
And they'll be checking.
That's right, exactly right.
I know.
I'm ready.
Nice to see you.
Nice to see you.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
