Hi, everybody. This is the Barbara Gaines Show.
As you can see, Barbara's not here.
I am Mary, filling in for Barbara, who's on assignment.
So you're guest hosting. That's nice.
Yeah, yeah.
That's good. Doc is here?
Doc is not here.
Doc is not here.
It does. I feel like I'm doing the show with Joan Rivers or something.
Oh, that's my friend.
Anyway, you're filling in.
I'm here with Dave and special guest Paul Schaefer.
Thanks so much. It's great to be here with you.
Dave, are you okay?
They call me the breeze. What?
Are you all right?
Oh, I got a call from my buddy Doug, and he said,
Do me a favor. Oh, Lord.
Uh-oh.
He said, Do me a favor. Go outside and take a look at the sun.
He said, I think there's something wrong.
And so I went outside, and I called him back, and I said,
I don't know what's going on, but it seems all right.
And he said, Well, keep an eye on it.
And I did.
And to Dave, Jesus, God.
You looked right into the sun.
And then like an hour later, everything was fine.
But this is just, you guys go ahead.
You looked straight into the eclipse without the recommended glasses.
Eclipse.
Well, Bob was, he can't get out of the house, or Doug.
I can't remember who called.
I think Bob called and asked me to give Doug a call.
That's what happened.
You did not see it.
You did.
Could you see it, or you couldn't see it?
I saw everything.
Oh, I hope you're happy.
What a lovely thing that eclipse was.
You know, all you hear is awful, ugly stuff.
Yeah.
And then this was a nice thing for people to enjoy.
Paul, did you watch the eclipse, or were you not feeling you were under the
weather?
I was watching out my window, and I was, I didn't look at the sun.
I didn't have any equipment, but I noticed it got a little, a little dark.
A little darker, yeah.
It didn't get completely dark.
Yeah, people who saw it waved about it.
Some kind of went down.
Yeah.
I was delighted.
And then what we learned, you saw some of it.
I did, yeah.
I had the glasses.
I went out there and looked at the eclipse, and it was actually, I was kind of,
you know,
okay, I guess this is interesting.
But then once you saw it, it actually is pretty cool.
You were probably dying to take the glasses off.
I was.
I've done this.
I've gone out there with a mask.
I've gone out there with a box, a pin, a pin, and you're saying I can't see a
pin.
They talk about you put a pinhole in a piece of paper, and then what?
And then you're really watching sort of the shadow of the thing take place on
the far wall
of your box.
Yeah.
It's not the same at all.
Somebody would have to show me how to do that.
Absolutely not the same.
Well, and I have the eclipse phobia, because when I was a child, 15 or 16, we
had a total eclipse
in Indiana, and I was outside in the afternoon that it happened, sitting on the
curb just with
nothing to do, and oh, there it is.
And so I looked at it, and then like three days later, I remember waking up one
morning,
and this is all I saw in my eyes, just this nonstop flashing.
And I was, as a kid, you're petrified with anybody.
And I was afraid to tell my parents, and this, I thought, oh, well, this will
clear up.
Two weeks later, ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne-ne.
By the way, it didn't make that sound.
I went to the doctor, and the doctor says to me, you didn't happen to look at
the solar
eclipse, did you?
Oh, that's good.
And I said, well, no.
What kind of stooge do you take me for?
And to this day, my retinas are still scarred.
So I'm petrified of just, and it's one of those things where you just can't
almost help
but look at it, you know?
When you go out on your gig work, what kind of tunes do you do for gig works?
I know you do a lot of work with the symphony orchestras.
I've got a lovely symphony show that I've been doing, and I just do all my
favorite stuff,
pop stuff with an orchestra.
And you have a guest star singing?
Yes, yes.
The last time I did it in Toledo, Ohio, I had Thelma Houston, and when she
launches
into Don't Leave Me This Way, the people are up dancing.
Do a little.
Baby, my heart is full of love, and it's all for you.
That was my fault.
That's all I got.
Come on, Thelma.
No, what you got to do.
Leave me.
Yeah, yeah.
I walked into a restaurant a couple of weeks ago, and they were playing Frank
Sinatra Live,
New York, New York.
Oh, my God.
The disc jockey was playing, and it was so thrilling to hear this booming all
over the restaurant.
It was delightful.
How about a little New York, New York?
Sure.
I want to wake up in a city that never sleeps to find I'm A No. 1, king of the
top, top of the heat, top of the heat.
This is like assisted living.
What are we doing in the afternoon?
Hey, thanks for having me on the show.
That was actually very exciting.
Yeah, it was exciting.
Thanks, everybody.
Barbara will be back here next week.
Yeah.
Yeah, I don't know what you did.
Yeah.
Thanks.
Bye.
I know, Mary, that Barbara's going to be watching how I did with you, and if I
did okay, I might get to do it with her.
That's right.
