you know our next guest from the film roger and me it's the highest grossing
documentary
in history and he has a new movie entitled the big one opening april 10th here's
michael moore
michael good to see you thanks for having me on you know it seems like the last
thing i heard
about you prior to this was uh you uh were doing a television show for fox and
og simpson was a
guest on your show now that actually happened is that right yeah yeah we uh
just shot a pilot uh
for a late night show uh-huh oh well well not not at this hour what have you
heard um it's like two in
the morning and and and they said try to get oj or you said we'll get or he
happened to be in the
audience or how did that work i had this meeting with the president of fox he
said so uh what kind
of guests can you get on your show right so just off the cuff i just said uh i
think mother teresa
and oj would be a good combination sure this was like last summer and then a
week later mother teresa
died so there you go you're down to oj yeah then i'm down to oj and they they
said i gotta go get oj
so i actually convinced them to come on but you you must recognize that as
bizarre as everything
attending that was and is that things that happen afterward seem to be just
otherworldly that oj
is now you call him up and he says yeah okay i'll be a guest yeah really yeah
yeah he's watching a
movie when i called him selena and it's true and so he he shows up and then
what what is kind of the the the
the vibe in the room when it's my next guest oj comes out i i said uh our next
guest is a star of
film and television he won the heisman trophy uh ladies and gentlemen oj simpson
he comes out the
audience is a little stunned are they are they stunned angry or are they just
they're just stunned
they think that they think actually it's a fake it's it's an actor looking like
an oj lookalike right
right there's big business and oj lookalikes these days yeah and i'm telling
you if that was your
career then well that's too bad so uh so he sits down and i said to him i said
now do you know the
guy had you a relationship no no i'd never met the guy before in my life no uh
he just sits down and i
said uh oj i think we might as well get this out of the way i think the
question that's on my mind and
the minds of everyone here is uh do you think that adding 10 yards to the kickoff
is ruined professional
football right and um he actually thought i was serious and uh answered the
question and uh then
i said you know you know back in back in your day you didn't have all the high-tech
equipment that the
players wear today and i mean like these days they the guy the receivers have
these really tight-fitting
gloves that they wear and um then he i think you know sort of caught on uh and
and but from that
point and then you just flat out you just started asking him about the uh the
crime right yeah yeah
yeah and we got into the into the whole what did you say to him killer
and did you did he ever look at you like what's up what are you doing to me or
was it all just
another day in the life of oj no he said i said well i said well you killed him
no i didn't kill him
uh i said but you were there you were there maybe you were there and that's
when it actually started
sweating a little bit uh and i thought what and i've always thought that maybe
you know there's more
to this story than what the l.a police you know have told us and we haven't
really heard the whole
story but uh and you know we didn't hear it that night either but uh do you
after after this encounter
with uh oj do you have a different impression of him or of what might have
happened or is it pretty
much just uh kind of reinforcing what you already felt or knew i i feel that i
feel that the only
person or thing that knows what happened there is the dog and the dog is really
the is the only witness
to this crime uh but uh but he said a number of interesting things that i
thought didn't mean whether
or not he killed uh these two people but for instance the bronco chase he said
that uh when the first cop car
pulled up behind them they actually pulled over stopped the bronco got out and
uh then the police
had their guns pulled and they dove back in and that's when they took off and
then the police the
television helicopter showed up i i had i didn't know that right um so that was
interesting yeah but
he i mean from the from the point they couldn't find him he was a fugitive in
fact i mean it the
the fugitive status did not begin then right but i never thought i mean a chase
that's 40 miles an hour i
just kind of it was kind of it was getting in the way of the basketball game
too as far as i was
concerned so you know very bizarre well um you have a new film a new
documentary and this is uh takes
place you're you're on a book tour out promoting your book and it occurs to you
after a couple of uh
unusual events or perhaps not so unusual events take place well geez maybe i
ought to be documenting this
on video as well yeah yeah actually i was i was i'd gone to about 15 cities on
this tour and i spent most
of the day in the hotel room raiding the mini bar and watching game shows in my
underwear so i was like
i was getting kind of bored and i thought lord are you kidding me bored the
hell's wrong with you i
know the mini bar did it for you no it's uh i actually i ended up i was in detroit
on this tour
and i'm in a radio interview and in through the door walks neil bush while i'm
in this interview
the son of george bush and he freaks out he goes what are you doing here and i
said what are you doing
here he said where's the camera and i said oh there's no camera so it's a
little radio interview for a
book tour and he comes up to me and he pinches my cheek and he goes oh no
cameras oh and he walks
away i said that's it damn it i'm getting there i'm getting the camera so so
from that so i thanks
to george bush's son i started making this movie yeah it's interesting to me
because i think if you
see uh roger and me it and forgive me if i'm presuming something here it looks
like the work of a
lifetime and maybe there is nothing else to duplicate it you know what i mean
because it seemed so of you
so of the time that well maybe that's it in this one area and and if it is you
know god bless it right
that's quite an accomplishment but now you've been able to put together uh just
as equally a compelling
piece of work oh thank you yeah it's a it's it's like roger me but i would say
it's it's kind of the uh
the epic version of it i go to you know a number of cities and it's double the
budget i went from 200
to 400 000 you talked to phil knight the head of nike about talked to phil
knight uh asked him you know
why he doesn't make shoes in this country and he said well because americans
don't want to make shoes
i said well that's not true i'll go back to flint michigan and get you 500
people will make shoes
for you now he wanted you to take some of this out of the interview right yes
he did you take some of
it out of there no no nothing no they've been threatening and they're upset and
you asked him to
to open a nike plant in flint yeah your hometown to help the economy there and
if he did that would
you then take some stuff out of the interview no no i still wouldn't do it no
but but i but i will if if
actually he the film opens on april 10th so if he decides to build this factory
before then uh miramax
has offered to go in and actually put a little epilogue in at the end of the
film showing phil
with a golden shovel we've already bought the shovel we got the hard hats so it'd
be pretty breaking ground
if he's a smart man he'll do that i hope so but i i i believe that the reason
people do this they they
kind of outsource or whatever they call it they take the labor to other
countries because it is less
expensive but i just heard on the radio that a pair a new pair of air jordans
is 150 a pair right so how
much more expensive could they possibly be well they're paying these kids over
there 40 cents an
hour to work on assembly lines uh teenage girls and uh there's shoe companies
here like hush puppies
and new balance that make their shoes in this country maybe they don't make as
much of a profit
they still make a profit you know what i'm going to do they employ people i'm
going to get a camera
and i'm going to go talk to some of your employees to find out what do you
think of that yeah yeah i'm
going to get a camera go talk to your boss at westinghouse oh yeah yeah talk to
that pinhead
i'll go with you you come with me right and michael moore the film the big one
opens april 10th
we'll be right back michael nice to see you thank you
