Hi, how are you?
Let me put this somewhere.
Hi, nice to see you.
Here, no, I'll put it right over there.
Our next guest is ranked number one,
number one in the world
by the Association of Sports Climbers International.
And here we have some videotape
of this woman doing what she does.
Where is the videotape?
Here we go.
We don't have it.
No videotape.
She's that good.
She doesn't need videotape in the introduction.
Ladies and gentlemen,
please welcome the best rock climber in the world,
Lynn Hill.
Hi.
Hi.
Nice to see you.
Thank you.
Okay.
What does rock climbing mean?
Is that different from mountain climbing
or the same kind of thing?
Well, rock climbing came from mountaineering.
It's one form of getting to the top.
Right.
In the mountains,
you have to do a lot of hiking and ice climbing.
Camping, cooking, that kind of thing.
Right.
Sure.
But what I do is on a sheer cliff.
I do it usually in nice weather.
And is it a form of competition now or just sport?
This is one facet of rock climbing.
It's become a competitive sport,
and it's usually performed on artificial walls like this.
I see.
And this is, well, now, wait a minute.
You actually go up under and over that thing there?
Well, that's what we're going to try to do tonight.
You can do that?
Sure.
Oh, yeah.
You have a lovely little outfit on.
Yeah.
Very nice.
Makes it easier to climb.
Really?
Really?
What is that?
Like, magnetized or something?
It's Lycra.
And do you want to start this, and then I'll try it?
Okay, yeah.
I'm going to show you one quick thing here.
This is the belay.
The belay.
Trust me here.
I know what I'm doing right now.
I know.
Ooh.
Okay.
Now.
Does she ever.
All right, now.
You have my life in your hands here.
Now, there's no really danger of me falling, is there?
No.
But you know I have.
I'm blessed with cat-like quickness.
I know, yeah.
I wish I had an outfit.
Okay, here we go.
Okay, now this is the whole, the rope that you do not let go of.
If I fall.
You never let go of this rope?
Right.
Well, this is you.
You're on this rope.
Yes, if I fall, you pull this down.
Well, how are you hooked to this rope?
Where does it go?
I mean, right here.
But where does it go?
Does it go back around there or something?
Up to the top.
I'm your counterweight.
That's right.
All right, great.
And as I go, you pull the rope in, okay?
I don't know what you mean, pull it in.
Like this?
Pull this rope down, and if I fall, you pull this back, okay?
Oh, see, already, I don't know what I'm doing now.
Don't worry about it.
I'm not going to fall.
Don't tell me.
Don't worry about it.
If you fall...
Your cat-like quickness will be utilized right here.
That's right.
That's right.
I think you're right.
Okay.
Instincts will take over.
But wait a minute.
One more time, Lynn.
If you fall, I do what?
Just pull this back.
This is like kinking the garden hose.
It'll stop.
Just like that.
I just do that, and you don't fall?
Right.
I don't understand what I'm doing.
If you fall, I'm sorry.
Okay, don't worry about it.
Just give me a little rope.
I need a little bit of slack.
All right.
Okay, now...
Ooh!
Ooh, a rope burn!
All right, here we go.
Okay, now watch carefully.
All right.
Now, this would be just like going up any rock surface you would find in nature.
It's very important to watch where you put your feet.
See how I'm putting my feet on?
Yep.
Okay.
Now, theoretically, you're supposed to be pulling the rope up.
Oh, wait.
Well, see, that's why...
Is that right?
Did I pull it there?
Just pull it up as I go along.
Geez, I'd hate for you to plunge to your death.
Wow, look at this.
Now, I might...
Oh, I've got to keep the slack out of it, right?
Yeah.
Here's the tricky part now.
It's a necktie party.
Okay, you have to reach over the overhang.
See this?
Yeah.
It's a good hold.
Yeah, you're nuts.
Then you hook your foot there.
Now, sometimes it's better not...
Can you do that?
You're really going to do that?
Watch.
Okay, sometimes it's better not to use your feet.
Whoa.
Whoa.
Good job.
Do what?
I've got to do this?
I'm sorry.
Okay, I'm just going to come down this other route.
Wow.
Okay, now you have to give me some rope.
Do I have to move?
No, you just have to give me some rope.
What do you mean?
Give me some...
Like that?
Yeah.
Are you all right?
No, don't...
Geez.
Okay.
Now I'm coming down.
Uh-huh, yeah.
You just give me some rope.
Okay.
That's it.
Just like that.
There you go.
Is that enough rope?
A little bit more.
Oh, brother.
Okay.
All right.
Wow, that's very impressive.
Geez.
That's your turn.
Okay.
Okay, now we switch in.
I don't know.
Do we have time for this or not?
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's like Hillary and the Sherpas going up Everest, isn't it?
Yeah.
Okay, I'm your guide now.
All right.
What's the highest you've been on a mountain?
Well, I've done El Capitan, which is about 3,000 feet high.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's in Yosemite.
Where is it located?
Yosemite?
Yosemite, yeah.
Okay.
I've been at the lodge at Yosemite.
Okay, I'm going to lock you in.
All right.
Now what I'm going to do is give you a little bit of slack so that if you fall
on the beginning,
you're going to just jump back down.
Yeah.
Don't go yet.
No, no, don't go yet.
Of course not.
Okay, here.
We'll give you a little chalk.
Do most guys, when they climb, wear ties?
No.
All right.
Hold on, hold on.
All right.
I'm eager.
Give your hands in the chalk here.
That's the chalk?
Now, if you want to do it like the French do, you can go and blow it.
Yeah.
Wait, and then what?
Make a wish?
No, you've got to get some more chalk.
I didn't see you use chalk.
All right, I've got chalk.
One minute.
Here we go.
All right.
You start with your right hand there.
Okay.
Left hand there.
Okay.
And eventually, you can put your left foot there and your right foot there.
Okay.
Okay.
Oh, okay.
Oh, I hurt my back.
Okay.
Okay.
Right hand up.
Right hand up.
Yeah.
Okay, wait a minute.
Try this one over here.
It's a little easier.
Well, no, I can do that.
I just, all right, let me try it here.
You want to try that one?
These steps should be bigger.
Somebody talk to the park ranger.
We need bigger steps on this mountain.
Okay, and then here or here?
Here.
Yeah, there you go.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Okay, wait.
I think you'd have more fun on this one.
Oh, yeah.
I think fun is the word I'd use, too.
Okay, here.
I'm going to be a little taller, aren't I?
Boy, that hurts.
You know, you ought to have chalk or something on your hands.
All right, let me try it once more because I...
These ones.
No, left hand there.
Yeah.
Okay.
And then you can put your feet up here.
Okay.
Feet are where?
Okay.
There you go.
Left foot goes there.
There?
There you go.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's it.
Go to the right.
Go to the right.
Yeah.
Underneath.
Over to the right.
I don't think so.
Have you got me?
Ah!
Oh.
Hold on.
I could actually...
Oh, there you go.
With the rope, I could have gone right up.
Nice meeting you.
Thank you for being here.
Lynn Hill.
We'll be right back.
We'll be right back.
We'll be right back.
